Ce mécanisme peut avoir la construction repré sentée dans le brevet suisse no 1115276 (lu 8 février 1923. Le mécanisme compteur com prend plusieurs disques à chiffres 101 qui, disposés en alignement axial dans le chariot 95, sont montés .sur un arbre et portent sur leurs périphéries dës chiffres visibles à tra vers de.;;
en faisant par conséquent tourner aussi les disques 1 1. Ceux-ci sont empêchés d'aller trop loin et sont astreints à se mouvoir d'un mouvement pas à, pas par l'action des ancres d1éch;
Toutefois. ordinaire ment., on ne fait usage des touches . 216 et 217 que pour l'addition et la soustraction et on ne les tient abaissées ni pour la. multipli cation ni la division. Un abaissement et une libération rapides :de l'une ou l'autre de cep touches a pour résultat le dégagement de l'embra.v-aje après un seul tour du tambour calculateur;
quel que soit le temps pendant lequel on tient ces touches abaissées. Avec les touche: de contrôle mises en position pour due le mé canisme compteur continue î1 fonctionner aussi longtemps que l'une ou l'autre, des tou ches de commande est tenue abaissée, on mut employer la machine, telle qu'elle a. été1 dé crite jusqu'ici, pour faire clos multiplications et clos divisions;

The machine shown comprises a base 22 provided with flanges 23, 24 between which are the selector and counter mechanisms, as well as the devices (the control. It contains all the elements necessary for rapid completion. and exact addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and all of these operations are performed automatically by key down. This machine has nine rows of numeric keys, 25.
comprising chareune nine keys numbered from 1 to 9 and, at its front end, 'an erase key 26, the lowering of which releases the lowered number key in = la. corresponding row.
When a button is lowered in a row, it remains lowered until it is released either by the operation of the erase button or by that of the calculating mechanism. Between the flanges 23, 24 extend fixed crosspieces 27 and 28 (fig. 4, 5, 6, 8), on which are mounted the rows of keys, the number of which is determined by the capacity that one wishes to give to the machine.
Each row comprises a top plate, 29, which forms part of the cover of the machine and on the underside of which is secured, by its ends, a bracket 32 (fig. 4) which is spaced from said plate and serves as a guide to the rods 33 of the keys of the corresponding row. The keys are normally held raised by springs 34 bearing against the brackets 32 and against the shoulders formed on the rods -of the keys.
Under each of the brackets 32, with the underside of which it is in contact, is arranged a slide 35 normally held forward by a spring 36 and provided with several openings through which pass the rods of the keys, each of which is provided. a chin 37 which, when lowered. button, pushes the slide 35 back and engages under it to hold the button down.
The erase key 26 of each row carries a projection 38 which, when this key is lowered, moves the slide to release the lowered number key 25.
A selector lever, which is lowered to different degrees by lowering the different buttons, is located under the button stems and consists of two parts. Its main part 41 pivots by its front end, on a tongue 42 of the frame and is connected by its free or movable end, with an elbow lever 46 pivoting. on a rod 45.
On a tongue 43 (read frame and located between the ends of the lever 41 and closer to the free end thereof, pivots a secondary lever 44 which is articulated at 44a, to the main lever 41 at a point adjacent to the pivot on the tongue 43, so that a relatively small angular movement of the hinge pin 44a is produced by a greater angular movement of the lever 44.
The lever 44 extends towards the pivoting end of the lever 41, along the latter. and the viers are angled laterally just behind the axis -44a. so that the main part of the lever 44 is in line with the rear part of the main lever 41.
The keys of the key, - are in alignment, those of the keys representing the values from 1 to 6 being directly above the. main part of lever 44, while the key shafts representing the values from 7 to 9 inclusive are directly above the rear part of lever 41.
The keys for values from 1 to 6 therefore actuate the main lever 41 indirectly, while those for values from 7 to 9 act directly on it.
If we lower the key of 4, for example. it lowers the lever 44 thereby lowering the free end of the lever 41, while when the button of 9 is lowered, it directly lowers the free end of this lever. With this arrangement, a slight inaccuracy in the length of the shank, will not produce a noticeable variation in the. "Put in place" value selector elements and larger manufacturing tolerances are permitted. which makes it possible.
mass production.
On the. rod 45. which is arranged to. the back of the machine. there -% - each time a lever 46 for each section of keys. Each lever 46 has a horizontal arm, connected to the corresponding end of lever 41, and a vertical arm connected with the value selector element located on the drum actuating the counter mechanism. In the hori zontal arm. there is a slot 47 (fig. 4). in which works.
a peg 48 planted on the lever 41 to allow relative movement of the arm and the lever when the latter is lowered by the numeric keys. The lowering of the lever 41 over different distances, determined in advance, causes the vertical arm 49 of the lever 46 to perform different angular movements. This arm 49 is provided, at its upper end, with a toothed sec tor 51, concentric with the rod 45 and meshing with a toothed wheel 52 located on the value selector element.
Lowering a key in one of the sections a; thus the effect of producing an angular displacement of the selector element 56, associated with the section, and of bringing this. element to one. corresponding position îi. the numerical value of the down key. There is a selector element associated with each key section and, here, there is. therefore nine of these elements. The lever 41 is normally held up, and the vertical arm 49 of the lever 46, pulled back, by a spring 49a connecting an arm 50 of the lever 46 to the base of the machine.
The drum actuating the counter mechanism is mounted on the shaft 53, supported in the flange 23 and in an intermediate support 54 (fig. 3): It comprises nine control wheels 55 (fig. 3) secured to the shaft. 53 and nine value selector elements 56. mad on this shaft, a wheel 55 and an element 56 forming, together, a control unit. The drum also includes additional wheels 57 carrying ten transfer pins and ten locking means for the selector elements, as will be described later.
The drum can be rotated one full revolution, in one direction or the other, from an initial position, by a motor connected to it by means of a transmission mechanism whose direction of travel can be overturned so that, with the motor always rotating in the same direction, the drum can be rotated in one direction or the other.
The wheel 55 of each control unit carries a slide 65 (fig. 14) arranged so as to be able to move diametrically to it and provided. at one end. a sector 66, concentric with the wheel and. presenting nine teeth of the same pitch as the deaths of the. intermediate rune of the mechanism:
counter. The slide 65 is held in the slide, formed for it in the wheel 55 by a crown 67, secured to the latter, and is normally held withdrawn, with the teeth of the sector 66 within the periphery of the wheel .
The role of each selector element 56 is to bring out or retract the corresponding slider at the desired time, during the rota, 'Lion of the drum, to bring the chosen number of teeth into engagement with the counter mechanism. This selector element 56 to one of the sides of which the input wheel 52 is attached, is provided on its opposite side, that is to say its side adjacent to the control wheel 55 has, associated, d 'a cam 68 (fig. 15) acting on a roller 69 mounted on the slide 65 (fig.
14) and having an upper part 71 which, when it is in. taken with l the roller holds the slide withdrawn and a lower part 7 2 which, when it comes into contact with said roller, causes the slide to come out. A support cam 73, complementary to the main cam 68, is disposed opposite the.
lower part 72 of the latter with which it forms a groove-cam 7.1 clans which the roller reciprocates as the wheel turns. which thus ensures a constrained movement of the slide 65 at the chosen moments, to the grout of the rotation of the wheel, according to the. "pose" given to the selector element, that is to say according to the position to which it has been brought.
The slide 65 thus receives a reciprocating motion for each revolution of the wheel and the time (the its reciprocating motion, relative to the position. (The wheel, is determined by the. pose given to the selector element. When the drum is rotated in one direction, the slide is forced to exit when its sector pals in front of the intermediate wheel of the counter mechanism, so that the selected number of teeth engages with the latter and withdraws or retracts after this sector has passed the counter mechanism.
When the drum is rotated in the opposite direction, the slide is brought out before reaching the counter mechanism and it withdraws, or retracts, as soon as the. intermediate wheel a, rotated by the selected number of teeth. When the selector element is set to zero position, the bucket slurry comes out after its sector has passed the counter mechanism, when the drum rotates in one direction. and it exits and re-enters before this sector reaches said mechanism, when the drum is rotated in the opposite direction.
So that all the sectors 66 of the slides 65 do not come into engagement with the intermediate wheel of the counter mechanism at the same time, during the: rotation of the drum, which would suddenly place a heavy load on the motor, the necks - beams are clearly offset anb around the drum.
To indicate the values that have been entered in the. machine by lowering the keys so as to avoid the operator having to search on the keypad to take into account the "debugging" of the machine, each selector element 56 is provided with a rim part 76 (fig. 15), on which are drawn, successively, the numbers 0 to 9 and one of these. digits, on: each of the successive selector elements is visible through a window 77 (fig. 4) (the box. When a key is lowered, its numerical value appears in the window.
in the. position occupied by the particular section to which this key belongs. Above (the window, the. Box is. Provided with digits 78 (fi g. 1) and. An index 79 to allow easy reading of the number that appears.
The selector elements 56 are brought: to the positions chosen by lowering the keys; but they do not turn worse with the drum and: means are provided to prevent them from turning when the drum rotates from a neutral position, thus due to prevent any value from being introduced into the drum afterwards. he left his neutral position.
Each selector element 56 is provided with a toothed sector 81 and, in these sectors can be engaged, to prevent movement of the selector elements when the valve is out of its neutral position, the fingers 82 (fig. . 4), which are mounted on a transverse shaft 83 and are linked together to lock or release all the selector elements.
To the sleeve to which all the fingers 82 are attached, is fixed an arm 84 (fig. 12), the rounded end of which engages a cam 85 which, attached to the drum shaft, has a notch 86 located opposite the e = rounded end of the arm 84 when the drum is in its neutral position. which allows the fingers 82 to disengage. under the action of gravity, sectors 81.
During the movement of the drum, the. cam 85. by acting on the arm 84, raises the fingers 82 in engagement with the sectors 81 and holds them in this position while the drum does not occupy its neutral position. The point at. which locking fingers 82 become active is determined by the. notch length 86.
The values entered into the machine by lowering the value keys can therefore no longer be changed after the drum has. turned from a certain amount to. from its neutral position. To center the drum in its neutral position at. the end of each operation.
a cam 8 7 secured to the shaft of the. drum and presenting bare deep recess 88, coo father with a roller 89 which. .mounted at the end of a pivoting lever 91. is held in engagement with the cam 87 by the spring 92 (fig. .1). the slope of the cam being sufficient to force the lever to center the drum in its neutral position at the end of a calculation operation.
The machine shown can. be employed to make additions. subtractions, multiplications and -divisions. a step of any operation being effected by a rotation of the drum. Means are provided for setting the mechanism to automatically erase the ela-vrier and the drum after each rotation of the latter when adding and subtracting and so that the values entered on the clayier remain unchanged.
during successive rotations -du drum, when performing a multiplication or division. To the sleeve to which the -fingers 82 are subject is fixed an arm 93 (Fig. 12), which rises when the fingers are. brought into engagement with the toothed sectors 81.
For locking the arm 93 in the raised position when the machine is doing multiplication or division. so that the setting or focusing mechanism is not released during the. rotation of the drum, a stop lever 94 is integral with the lever 203, which is raised by the setting of the machine for one or the other. of these operations and is aetiônné by means which will be described further on, this lever cooperates with. arm 93. During addition and.
substraction. the keyboard is automatically erased at each revolution of the drum; but during the multiplication and the. division it is not automatically deleted; it is erased by means of an erase key, described later, which is used once the operation is complete.
The values entered in the drum are transferred. by the rotation of c.elui-.ci, to the counter mechanism which is, disposed on the carriage 95 (fig. 4). which is movable Longitudi nally to allow the action of the control element on the counting wheels of different value. Preferably, the carriage 95 can be moved longitudinally. step by step by means of a lever 96 arranged on the front of the. box-envelope and mounted on the shaft 97 which extends rearwardly to the mechanism 98 for moving the carriage.
This mechanism may have the construction shown in Swiss Patent No. 1115276 (read February 8, 1923. The counter mechanism comprises several number discs 101 which, arranged in axial alignment in the carriage 95, are mounted on a shaft and bear on their peripheries of digits visible through. ;;
opening99 of the envelope box. On one (the sides (each disc is fitted with a toothed wheel 102 meshing with an idle intermediate toothed wheel 103 on a shaft 104. As the drum rotates, the sectors 66 engage the wheels. 103 that they spin.
consequently by making the discs 11 also rotate. These are prevented from going too far and are forced to move in a step by step movement, by the action of the anchors d1éch;
ippe 105 pivoting on the shaft 106 and held in engagement with the toothed wheels 103 by balls. 108 pushed back by 'springs and carried by the bar 109. The latter can run to release the balls from the anchors. and thus free them. when it is desirable to reset 1-digit disks to zero. 1'n known means is provided to bring these disks to zero by. rotation of the shaft, on which they are mounted and that is. provided.
on the outside of the carriage, with a crank 112 1). The counter mechanism is. E: ha @ f @ - provided with leverage:. #. The postponement 113. which act. together with the ankles. laterally movable transfer .; provided on the drum, in order to transfer the values of a disputed counter to the counter disk of the next highest order.
We can use in the. machine shown here. leverage. (It has transfer pins: any type. which are of known arrangement and. do not require further description.
In the present machine, one of the factors of the calculation is indicated by the lowering (the numeric keys of the keyboard; the second is indicated on the counter mechanism of the carriage and the third factor is indicated independently. For example, in a multiplication, the multiplication, @ ande appears in window 77, the product appears on the cart and the multiplier appears in windows 109a. This third factor is entered in machine by rotating the drum in one direction or the other.
The indicator mechanism (the third factor is mounted between the fla.clue? -1 and the intermediate support 54 and comprises several digital wheels 114 (fig. 8) each of which is provided on one side with a toothed wheel. 115 and intermediate wheels 116 meshing with the wheels 115. The latter can move in a step-by-step movement, controlled by the spring pawls 117.
The chosen intermediate wheel 116 rotates by one tooth for each revolution of the drum under the action of a (slow 118 being able to move on the shaft 119 along it (to come into the plane of the wheel intermediate of the chosen numerical order) by the longitudinal movement of the carriage 95, so that the values entered in the third factor are of the same numerical order as those entered in the second factor or product.
The tooth 118 is provided on a collar 120 mounted with a groove and a watch on the shaft 119 and which carries an indicator 12? indicating the numerical order chi digit being entered in the third factor. To the collar 120 is attached a rod 193 which is connected to the carriage 95 in the manner indicated in the aforementioned patent, so that the indicator 122 moves in time with the carriage and in the reverse direction thereof. The arbrv 119 is rotated by the drum and in time with the. rotation of it.
1-ii drum 1? 8, carry tens. which is mounted to rotate in a place adjacent to the digital wheels 11.1, is provided with cams 129 and pins 131. pushed back by springs, which cooperate with the levers: the carry 13? carrying the intermediate wheels 11 (i to transfer tens to the counting wheels' of the order immediately greater:
Student. Means are planned. to rotate transfer drum 1 to 8 in either direction for a single value drum rotation Cens. in order to allow the use of the third factor recorder in both multiplication and division.
Drum 128 is driven by an electric motor 135 which is mounted on the base of the machine. at the back of it. and whose shaft 136 is journaled in the frame of the machine and is provided with a flexible coupling 137 to reduce the. vibration that can be transmitted from the motor to the mechan imc. as well as to take into account any incorrect assembly of the chi-motor shaft.
this shaft 136. is secured by a pinion 138 meshing with a toothed wheel 139 mounted on the hollow shaft 141 (fig. 2). A; The friction clutch is interposed between the toothed wheel 139 and the key computer mechanism in the machine so that, if the computer mechanism engages, the clutch can slip and thus avoid destruction (this mechanism. the shaft 141 is mounted, in contact with the wheel 139, a friction disc 142 on the other side of which is a toothed wheel 143.
The wheels 139 and 143 and the friction disc 1.12 are closely pressed into frictional contact by the spring. 144, turning the shaft 141. Normally the movement is. transmitted from the wheel 139 a, la. wheel 1.13: however, in the event that the latter is immobilized, the wheel 139 could continue to rotate thanks to the friction clutch described.
In the box-casing journal a drive shaft 145 which is parallel to , the shaft 141 and to which is attached a toothed wheel 146 (fig. 8) which meshes with the wheel 143. Between the wheel 146 and the mechanism: calculator, the shaft 145 is provided with a clutch 1.17 which controls the operating time of the computer mechanism and will be described below.
On the shaft 145 is mounted to. tongues and grooves a collar 148 (fig. 5) to which is fixed a toothed wheel 149 which actuates the calculating mechanism and can be moved longitudinally Li the shaft to be brought to two different positions in order to effect the reversal of the direction of rotation - of the tam bour 128 in relation to the key direction of motor rotation.
While we are using the. machine the motor runs continuously in rotation in one direction and, since it is essential, to carry out the various operations (calculation, that the drum 128 rotates in (opposite directions. the, toothed wheel 1-19 determines the reversal necessary for this purpose, (in the key direction of travel. This wheel can be moved longitudinally on the shaft 1.15 by the arm 151 which, attacking the collar 1.18, is secured to the rod 152 passing through the hollow shaft 141 and which is provided with.
its outer end, with a slot in which is engaged the counter-bent arm 153 of the lever 154, the angular displacement of which causes la. rod 152 to move the wheel 149.
The mechanism used for displacement. of the lever 154 will be described later. \ On a shaft mounted in the intermediate support 54 turns a pinion 155 (fig. 5) which meshes with the wheel 149: in one of the positions of the latter. A a shaft 156 journalling in the intermediate support 54, is secured a toothed wheel 157 which meshes with the wheel 149 in the other position thereof. Pinion 155 and wheel 157 mesh with each other, so that they always turn in the opposite direction. When the wheel 157 is in mesh with. wheel 1.19, it turns in the opposite direction to it.
When it is the pinion 155 which is engaged with the. wheel 149, the wheel 157 then turns in the same direction as the latter. The direction of rotation (the 157 wheel is therefore changed. By the displacement of the wheel 149. A the shaft, 156 is secured, on the other side of the intermediate support 54, a toothed wheel 158 (fig. 16) meshing with a toothed wheel 159 which, rotating on a shaft mounted in said support, meshes with the toothed wheel 161 secured to the shaft 53 of the drum.
The movement of toothed wheel 149 therefore reverses the direction of rotation of the drum. The wheels 157, 159 and 161 have the same diameter, die so that the drum rotates at the same speed as 157.
On the shaft of the transfer drum 12.8 is mounted, (read the same side of the intermediate support as the wheel 157, a toothed wheel 1.62 (fig. 5) of the same diameter as the latter. The wheel 162 is secured to a collar 163 which can slide tongue-and-groove over said shaft to move wheel 162 along the latter to engage either wheel 157 or pinion. 155.
When the. wheel 162 is engaged with the. wheel 157, the, two wheels 157 and 162 rotate in opposite directions and, when released,. (the wheel 157 and meshing with pinion 155, wheels 157 and. 162 rotate in the same direction. In this way, regardless of the direction of rotation of the calulator drum, wheel 162 can rotate in the same direction. same direction or. the opposite direction, thus forcing the transfer drum 128 to rotate in the same or opposite direction.
The collar 163 is moved longitudinally to the shaft by an arm 164 secured to the sliding rod 165 which is held in either of its two positions by a ball 166 (fib . 3), pushed back by a spring, and which has, at its end, a slot in which is engaged the counter-bent c-xtreinity of the lever 16î, passes through an opening of the box-in- veloppe so that, by moving the lever 167,
o = n can bring the. wheel 162 requires either wheel 157, or pinion 155, depending on the direction in which transfer drum 128 is desired to rotate.
Thanks to the transfer drum 128 associated with the counting wheels 114, it is possible to accomplish many calculation operations, with a much smaller number of operations c111 calculating drum than has been the case hitherto. The third factor counting wheels 114 are also used with advantage for the determination of reciprocal values, for square roots and for ale. divisions.
The counting wheels 114 can easily be reset to zero by rotating the crank 168 (figures 1 and 6) secured to the shaft on which they are. climbs. Vil any suitable means, such as that shown in the aforementioned patent. can be used to release the pawls 117 to allow the. easy reset of wheels 11-1 to zero.
To clear the keyboard and to set the machine up for addition and subtraction, the machine is normally ready for multiplication and division. an erasable key 171 (fi--. 1) including lowering is provided on the keyboard. erases all the values entered by means of (the keyboard, a key (the "non-repeat" 172 which, when it is lowered, puts the.
machine developed for addition and subtraction and a repeat key 173, the lowering of which frees key 17-) and restores the, my china in state for multiplication and division. The sliders 35 (FIG. 4), which keep the aetiQn- nées numeric keys lowered, are provided, at their rear ends, with lips 174. The frame pivots. in front of the lips 17.1, a plate 175 which.
when pushed back. moves the sliders 35 in the same direction and causes them to release the key rods.
On an upright 17 6 (flb. 5) swivels. in the box, a lever 177 , one end of which is located under the. rod of key 171, while its other end has a ramp 178, adjacent to the lower end of plate 175, so that the lowering of key 171 causes this plate to tilt to push sliders 35 back and Release all digit keys down.
The devices brought into action by the lowering of the key 172 which is held lowered by the engagement of the spring slide 179 with the projection 181 formed on the shank of the key, comprise a trigger key bar 182 articulated to the handle. wheel 157 (the so that its free end moves back and forth as this wheel turns synchronously with the drum actuating the cal culator mechanism, to which it is directly connected.
At its end. free, the bar 182 has a projection 183 going and coming under the plate 175 and normally out of contact therewith. The bar 182 is -aided by a lateral projection 18.1 .du lever 185, which pivots between its ends on the upright. 176 and the anterior end of which is under the stem of the. touch 172 (the so that when lowered, the projection 184 rises, raising the free end of the bar 182, the projection 183 then oscillates the plate 175 to.
each revolution of the 157. wheel thereby freeing, during the rotation of the drum, the lowered digital tasks. The low deny key key 173, acting. on the slide 179 to push it back. free her. touches 172 and deactivates the mechanism controlled by it. so that the keys 25 of the keyboard remain lowered during repeated rotations of the drum. These keys 25 can be released by lowering the erase key 171.
The keys 172, 173 will be given here the name of "control" keys because of the control they exert on the keyboard during the calculation. The clutch 147, which was discussed above, is interposed, on the shaft 145, between the latter and the. wheel 149 and is normally disengaged to allow the motor to run continuously without rotating the latter wheel. It has a ratchet 188 (fig. 11), attached to the shaft 145 and surrounded by a rage 189 attached. to a sleeve 191 (fig. 2), that is. mounted on the shaft 145 and on which the collar 148 is mounted in la.n- gucttes and grooves.
In the cage 189 rotates the pawl 192 whose tooth 193, which can be brought into engagement with the ratchet 188 by the spring 194, is normally held free (the this ratchet which is thus free to rotate without rotate the cage. The latter has an opening 195 through which an ear 196 of the pawl passes. A pressure exerted from outside to .in on this opposite ear will release, key the,
the action of tooth 1 of the 93.durochet spring 194 188 to which, when this pressure ceases :, will return, and keep the pawl in engagement with the ratchet until the ear 196 is again pushed back.
To allow this engagement and this key ga.gement of the clutch, as well as to center the cage in a neutral position; at the c ', cgagement .de the clutch, and to prevent an inopportune operation of the latter; there is provided, in the box-envelope of the machine, below the clutch, a shaft 202 (fig. 12) on which a yier 203 pivots having, at its end, a projection 204 arranged to come -en taken with the ear 196 in order to release the pawl 192 from the ratchet 188.
The lever 203 is normally held in a position such that the link 204 is in contact with the periphery of the cage 189 by a spring 205, connected to the other end of the lever 203. When the clutch rotates, the projection 204, engaging the lug 196, disengages the clutch. The clutch is held in a neutral position by a lever 206 secured to the lever 203 and having one end 207, at their opposite ramps, arranged to engage in a similarly shaped notch 208 formed in the periphery of the cage. The clutch is therefore always stopped in a neutral position, after disengaging.
To prevent movement of the wheel 149 except when the clutch is in the. po sitio-n and to prevent the clutch from rotating during movement (the wheel., a disc 209 (fig. 6 and 11) is secured to the cage 189, and presents, beyond the, periphery of this cage, a notch 212. On the arm 15l, which moves the wheel 149, there is a projection 213 (fig. 5) having a head 211 scusibly of the same shape as the notch 212. When the, cage 189 is in the neutral position, the notch 212 is in front of the head 214 which can therefore pass through it.
When the, cr-i ,, e is not: in the neutral position, the notch: is not in front of the, head and, consequently, the latter cannot pass through this notch, this, which prevents 1v # toothed wheel 149 from being moved. Likewise, while the head 214 passes through the notch 212, the cage cannot rotate due to the presence of the head in this notch.
The means for moving the toothed wheel 149 and the means for releasing the clutch are actuated by the same devices and, thanks to the head 214. the clutch is prevented from turning before the movement (the </ B> the wheel is finished In moving the wheel the head moves through the notch 212 and during this time prevents the rotation of the disk 209.
On the keyboard are still arranged these keys (command 216 and 217 (fig. 1 and 6), the first of which is an addition key and the second a subtraction key. The lowering of the 216 key produces ; t engaging the clutch and rotating the computer for a single revolution, in one direction. then disengaging the clutch. Lowering button 217 produces the same effects, with this difference that the drum is rotated in the opposite direction.
It goes without saying that lowering the key 216 brings the. 1.19 toothed wheel in one position and lowering the. key 217 brings this wheel in. the other position. Keys 216 and 217 are normally held up by springs 218 and are not provided with means to keep them down. Under the keys 216 and 217 is a console 219 on which a lever in the shape of a T. 221 pivots, one of which is closed arms. 222. The key 216 and the other arm are located under the key rod. 223, under the stem of the. key 217.
Lowering. of the. button 216 switches lever 221 to. the. position re presented to the fib. 6, while lowering the key 217 switches lever 2? L to the opposite position.
At the lower end of the lever 21 is connected a connecting rod 22.1, connected at its other end to the lever 151 which acts to move the rod 152. The lowering (the buttons 216 and 217 serve to move this shaft and hence the toothed wheel 1.19 to turn the drum operating the counter mechanism in either direction.
On the. console 919 pivots a thin plate 226 the lowering of one or the other of the keys 216. 217 rocks back and which is normally held forward by the spring 227 (fig. 2). This plate presents. the shank of the key 216 cast a flat surface 228 on which this shank can act to rotate the. plate around its pivot 229. Under the. freeze rl, e key 217. la.
plate 226 has an inclined face 231 which. when the. stem of this key comes in hri @ e with it, made low, -ulate it. plate in: 1.rrièrr @. On the plate 226 pivots a lever 232 (fig. 12). which rests by one of e F. xirémit (@@ on an ear 253. held by a spring, and.
which presents, at its other end1 @ #. a notch 23.1- in which ea normalizes the pin 235 of the lever 203.
The movement of the lever 232 backwards therefore switches the lever 203 around its pivot 202, to. against the action of the spring 205, and the movement of the lever 203 removes the projection 201 from the lug 196 and removes the lever 206 from the notch 208, thus allowing the en-acement. of the jam and the rotation of 1 <. cage ,
1 # ZD 189 of it. n The clutch remains in gear as long as it is held down. button 216, or 217, and as soon as you stop pressing the button, the spring 227 pulls the lever 232 forward, so that the projection 201 of the lever 203 disengages the clutch and due to the lever 206 stops the rotation of the cage in the neutral position.
However. Usually, the keys are not used. 216 and 217 only for addition and subtraction and they are not kept lowered or for the. multiplication nor division. A rapid lowering and releasing: of either of these keys results in the release of the clutch after a single revolution of the calculating drum;
but, as will be described below, means are provided so that. when key 172 is down. the actuation of either closed control buttons 216 or 217 has no other results than a single cycle of operation of the machine.
regardless of how long you keep these keys down. With the control keys in the correct position, the counter mechanism continues to operate as long as one or the other of the control keys is held down and the machine can be used as it is. been described so far, to make closed multiplications and closed divisions;
but that exio'e. from the hart island the operator, a mental effort to count the revolutions of the drum and to release the touclick when the latter has. does the desired number of turns. Fear of avoiding this and limiting the mental effort (the operator to the only operation of the.
value key, the machine is provided (the means, brought into action by the lowering of other thief keys. to rotate the drum a number of times eorrespoiirlant to the value of the oil and.
then release it from the clutch .. clutch.

The advantages resulting from the use of a double lever have been discussed above in connection with the double levers used with the keys for entering values in the machine. The movement of the rear end of the lever 55 is used to develop a trigger control device, including the.
The position varies according to the value of the key down and which activates the trigger so as to release the jam after the drum has made a number - of turns corresponding to the value of the key down.
-the base (the machine is attached, near the rear part of the latter, to a frame? 61 on which pivots, at 263 (wire. 6 and 8), a lever 26? set in motion by the lever \ 55 which, for this purpose, has at its rear end a slot 26-1 in which is engaged a pin 265 projecting from the rear part of the lever 6.
Lowering. of a key 236 produces an upward movement of the rear end of the lever 255 and, consequently, a downward movement of the ankle? G7 which gives 1111 upward movement of the anterior part of the lever? 62. This lever is normally held by the spring. \ 1G6, with 'sa. anterior part rRreduced and. the position of its front end is determined by the.
lowered button let value? 3G.
In the frame 261 the rack wing 967 (fig. 7) slides, at its front end, by the pin ü head 268 which passes through the slot 269. which, made in said bieiti, is slightly inclined. bottom up towards the back of it as shown in fib. 8. .1 its rear end.
the 1st rack 267 is guided by the roller 271 (fig 7). Dan: the frame, \ l61 is mounted, above (the the rack, a pinion 2î? Which meshes with the latter and it is rotated step by step to make the creator move step by step. there is a pin 273 on the side of the clutch cage 189 (fig. 6)
arranged to engage with pinion 272 and to rotate it by one step for each turn of said cage. The. 267 rack is thus moved one step back for each turn of the cage. On the frame 261 pivots, above #, the rack 267, a pawl 274 which can be held in engagement with the teeth of the rack by the action of a spring 275. The pawl 274 and the rack 267 are.
constructed in such a way as to allow step-by-step movement of the rack 267 backwards and to maintain it in the. position where it is thus brought. Means are provided to release the pawl 274 to allow the rack to return to a neutral position, when the drum has made a number of turns .corresponding to the value of the key down.
On the pin 2G8, which .is secured to the rack 267, an arm 276 is pivoted having an elongated slot 277, in which the pin 278 carried by the front end of the lever 262. The arm 276 is thus formed. brought to -des. angular positions can be changed by lowering various keys \ _ '36. It is provided with an ear 281, from which extends laterally an ankle 282 which is consequently brought to various positions, by the lowering of said keys,
to act on the trigger mechanism in order to stop the operation of the machine substantially at the end of the last revolution called drum actuating the counter mechanism, depending on whether this is determined by the value (the key 236 lowered.
With the peg 282 cooperates a stepped plate 283 which can effect a limited longitudinal sliding movement on the pegs 284 and 285 (Fig. 7) secured to the frame 261. The plate 283 is normally held forward by the spring. 286 connected, at one end, to. the ankle 284 and, by the other, to the ankle 287 subject to. la, plate 283.
The anterior border. Of the. plate 283 is provided with a series of stepped notches 288 which are arranged successively behind each other by a distance equal to the length of one of the steps. rack 267.
The anterior edge of the plate 283 lies in the vertical plane of the ankle 282, - so that, as the latter is moved backwards by the movement of the mesh 267 at the rear, the ankle 282 comes into contact with the vertical face of one of the steps 288, depending on the angular position of the arm 276 which carries the ankle. The steps 288 are arranged such that the crheville 282 is brought into contact, or substantially into contact, with the.
vertical face of the step when the drum has made a number of turns less than one unit than the determined number of turns it must make, so that the final turn of the drum causes the che ville to push the plate 283 in back. When the key 236 representing the value "1" is lowered, the pin 282 is brought in front of the face of the first step 288a (fig. 6) and substantially in contact with this face, so that the first turn of the drum will produce movement of the slide plate 283 and disengagement kills the clutch.
To achieve that the movement of the, plate 283 disengages the clutch and returns the various parts of the mechanism to the neutral position; a lever 291 (fi- ,. 7) is provided, pivoting on the pin 287 carried by said plate. The frame 261 is subject to a stop 292 which .is in -contact with the rear face of the lever 291 substantially in the middle of the latter.
As the. ankle 287 is moved backwards, the upper part of the lever 291, due to the existence kills the stopper 292, is moved forward and this movement is. -used to produce clutch disengagement and release of toothed 267 as well as focus mechanism.
The lever 291 has, at. soli sil- puter end, an ear 293 which lies behind an ear 294 of the pawl. 27.1 and is adjacent to it. When the upper end of lever 291 moves forward, eye 293 comes. engaged with the ear 294, swings the pawl 274 around its pivot and releases it. rack 267, This is then brought back to its. neutral position by the spring 295 which connects the rear end with the frame 261 (fig. 6).
The rear portion of lever 232 is located along the top of lever 291 and lever 232 is provided with a laterally extending peg 296 which is adjacent to the ramp 297 of the. lever 291. When the lever 91 is tilted as a result of the movement of the plate 283 in. rear, the ramp 297 slides under the pin 296 by lifting the rear end of the lever 232 and disengaging the latter from the pin 235 provided on the end of the control lever. clutch 203 (wire 1?).
The spring 205 then moves abruptly: the lever 203 to disengage the clutch and the lever 206 immobilizes the latter in its neutral position. The upward movement of the rear end of lever 23? under the action of. pin 296 lowers the front end of this lever, causing it to back up. locking plate 2-16 for binding the key stems 238. The upward movement of the keys releases the slide 242 and allows the spring 227 to row to bind the plate 226 to its neutral position. The.
releasing the down key 236 releases the lever 255 and allows the key spring 266 to drive the lever 262 to. a neutral position and. therefore, to return the lever -276 to a neutral position. These various actions occur almost simultaneously, sorting through the ankle, 382, la. machine stops deny by the, ankle 28? the machine stops and all its parts return: to a neutral position.
To perform divisions, the drum is rotated in a reverse direction a number of times equal to the whole number of times the divisor enters the dividend. On the next round. (read the drum, the comp- if # uses wheels of the counter mechanism carried by the cart are actuated to rest, so a series of new ones to the left of the dividend.
thus indicates that the drum has turned c. # which once (more than the whole number of times that the dividend contains the divisor. It is then necessary to rotate the drum once in the other direction to counterbalance the round additional which introduced the new ones in the meter.
Means are provided to give a warning and stop the operation of the drum when the new ones are thus introduced. in the counter mechanism, so that the machine can then be made to make a reverse turn, thereby making the desired number of the divider appear at the windows 109a. The introduction of the nine clans the counter mechanism is accompanied by a movement of the transfer levers 113 to. on the left of the number appearing in the counter mechanism and the means. are.
provided to make the movement (these levers stop the .machine. In the frame of the latter is mounted a lever 299 (wire. 12) which extends into the carriage, on the left side of the. machine, .de so as to be adjacent to the transfer lever 113 constituting the active transfer key lever located furthest to the left, and which has, at its end, a lug 301 with which the transfer lever engages when the series of new ones is introduced.
Movement of the left key transfer lever moves lever 299 around its fulcrum and lever re-movement \? 99 is used to sound a warning signal and to raise the rear end of lever 233 to key key @ - engage the clutch. In the bolte-casing of the machine is disposed a stamp 3112 (fig. -1) which is supported on the base and to which and adjacent a hammer 303 secured to the lever 299.
When this lever rocks on its pivot as a result of the movement of the transfer lever 113, the hammer strikes on the gong 30 ?. Under the lever 232 is arranged an angled lever 305 which pivots on the console 30.1 and one of whose arms is connected to the lever 299 by the connecting rod 306 (wire. 1?), Although its other arm has a lug 307 which is located under the rear part of lever 232.
When the lever 999 switches under the action of the transfer lever 113, the elbow lever 305 switches to lift the rear part of the lever '233. which thus releases the lever 203 and produces the release of the clutch and its immobilization in the neutral position. When this happens, the drum has taken one too many turns and. the divisor digit shown in window 109a is too high by one.
The addition key 216 is then lowered, which causes the drum to make a single revolution in the opposite direction, thus subtracting "1" from the number appearing in window 109a and erasing the nines of the counter mechanism, so that the number remaining value, indicated in the latter, constitutes the numerator of the fraction whose divideffde is the denominator. To reduce this fraction to decimals, we then move the carriage one notch and repeat the operation of (livision, continuing in this way until we have obtained k desired number of decimals.
The envelope box is provided with a right adjacent to its. front part, with buttons 808 and 309 to open and close the motor circuit (fig. 1).
We can. use the machine to do closed addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. When doing an addition operation, it often happens that the same number has to be added several times and, once this number has been entered in the key, it is not necessary to use the. addition key and to lower it a number of times corresponding to the number of times that the number in question must be added, then that we can press k key of value 236 corresponding to the number of times that the value must be added, which does. due this value will be added a corresponding number of times. to the value of key 236 lowered.
