Les moyens pour pousser les arrêts vers l'arrière en position pour limiter le mouve ment de soulèvement des goupilles 21 sont bien connus dans la partie; il suffit -de .dire que l'abaissement d'une touche d'un. montant du clavier -de la machine met en place un ar rêt correspondant sur le parcours d'une gou pille 21, de telle sorte que la barre de ca ractère associée à cette goupille pourra s'éle ver sur une distance proportionnelle à la quantité représentée par la touche abaissée;
(fig.
Opération <I>de.</I> non-addition <I>dans le</I> coriaptetc.r principal.
Introduction <I>de l'unité</I> complémentaire.
Exécution <I>d'un cycle</I> d'opérations <I>mil ou</I> d'espacement.
Les moyens pour ac complir ce cycle nul sont soumis ;à l'action de la barre 1. Ainsi,,si une ou plusieurs barres 1 sont soulevées pour l'enregistrement ou l'im pression, le cycle suivant ne peut pas .être un cycle de prise -du total;
Lorsque le compteur principal passe du côté positif au côté négatif de zéro, le bras 141 représenté au côté droit de la fig. 13 pousse la bielle 220 vers la gauche, comme on le voit .dans cette figure, en faisant basculer le levier coudé .dans la direction d'abaissement ,du bras 217 d'arrêt hors du passage de la glissière 213;
et lorsque le compteur princi pal passe par zéro dans la direction opposée, le levier 141 représenté à la gauche de la fig. 12 pousse la bielle 220 vers la droite pour placer le bras 217 d'arrêt dans le parcours de la glissière 213. Ainsi, lorsqu'il se trouve un solde positif ou débiteur dans la machine, la, glissière 213 est maintenue par l'arrêt 217 en position pour empêcher la glissière 208 de régler le compteur principal pour une opéra tion négative;
Ces moyens comprennent une glissière d'arrêt<I>223</I> (fig.
<I>Prise d'un</I> total crédit <I>ou</I> d'un <I>total</I> partiel.
<I>Compteurs</I> secoMnires.
Choix <I>du</I> concpteur <I>secondaire désiré.</I>
<I>Emploi</I> siynultané <I>des compteurs.</I>

Non-addition <I>dans le</I> compteur secondaire.
Blocage <I>entre les</I> touches total.
<I>Commande des</I> fonctions <I>de la</I> machine <I>par le chariot.</I>
<I>Plaque de commande.</I>
<I>Commande de la. soustraction</I> au <I>moyen</I> <I>du chariot.</I>
Cammande <I>par</I> chariot <I>de la</I> non-addition <I>dans le</I> compteur principal.
Commande <I>par chariot du total</I> final <I>à</I> <I>partir du compteur</I> principal.
<I>Commande par chariot du</I> total <I>partiel à</I> <I>partir du compteur</I> principal.
<I>Commande par chariot du choix du</I> compteur <I>B.</I>
Commande <I>par chariot du choix du</I> compteur <I>C.</I>
<I>Commande par chariot du choix du</I> <I>compteur D.</I>
<I>Commande par chariot du</I> total final <I>à partir</I> <I>d'un compteur secondaire.</I>
<I>Commande par chariot du total partiel à</I> <I>partir d'un compteur secondaire.</I>
<I>Commande par chariot de</I> non-addition <I>dans</I> <I>un compteur secondaire.</I>
<I>Prise de deux totaux partiels consécutifs</I> <I>de crédit.</I>

The embodiment of the machine according to the invention, which has been chosen to be represented, is intended to operate on a given set of shapes or work pieces used in commercial bookkeeping, but it will be understood that this machine can be easily modified to perform, in suitable succession, the operations required for other forms of business and for the bookkeeping of banks. The machine has a main counter and four secondary counters, but it is obvious that the number of secondary counters may vary.
The main counter is intended to add and subtract and give the exact algebraic sum, either positive or negative, of data. The secondary counters, in this particular embodiment, are not intended for subtraction.
The machine shown is provided with a cylindrical plate P which is supported in a sliding carriage moving on a rail fixed in a stationary manner to the frame of the machine. The plate carriage and its rail are not shown in the drawing. However, the carriage has a control plate 344 (fig. 25) intended to receive a series of control elements 345, the more complete description of which is given below. It is obvious that other forms of stages can be employed and it is not of primary importance that the stage or the impression mechanism be the movable element.
The machine described here is probably the only one of its type, in which positions can be accumulated in any of the multiple registers, from any position of the paper carriage, in any number of stations, from various positions of the cart, can be accumulated in any register and in which a total can be taken from any counter in any position of the cart.
The characters for printing positions, totals, etc., on the workpieces carried on plates P, are mounted on actuators constituted by bars 1 of characters in any desired number.
The character bars 1 have a rectilinear vertical movement. They are guided by a rod 2 (fig. 1) fixed in the frame of the machine and extending through a groove 3 in each of the character bars, a bar 4 fixed to the machine frame and a plate 5 similarly fixed in this frame, this plate having vertical grooves through which extend con soles 6 fixed to the character bars. Each character bar has a rear projection 7 having at its rear end a cleat 8 which extends through a vertical guide groove, in a plate 9 fixed to the frame of the machine.
The means for lifting the character bars are constituted by levers 10 (fig. 1), one for each character bar, these levers being pivoted in the frame of the machine at 11. The front arm of each lever 10 has a pin and groove connection with the bracket 6 of the corresponding character bar. A coil spring 12 tends to move the lever in the direction of lifting of the character bar.
The means for returning the character bars to their normal position comprise two crank arms or cam 13 (fig. 4, 21 and 23) fixed, on a main oscillation shaft 15 and carrying rollers 16 which come. engaged within the forked ends 17 of two levers 18.
When the levers 18 are in their lowered or initial position, a surface 17a is centered on the shaft 15, so that the movement of the shaft does not have to cause the movement of the levers 18 until the roller 16 enters a part 17b of the fork.
Likewise, a surface 17c is concentric with the shaft 15 when the levers are in their upper position, the return oscillation of the shaft not moving the levers 18 until the rollers 16 engage. with part 17b. These levers 18 are pivoted on the axis 11 and are fixed ri gidement by means of a universal bar 19 which is located above the forked arms of the levers 10. The shaft 15 is put in oscillation either by hand. by means of an electric motor (not shown).
It will be seen that when the oscillation shaft 15 rotates in the forward direction, the universal bar 19 is raised to allow the springs 12 to lift that of the bars 1 which is necessary to perform the desired operation, and that when the The oscillating shaft returns to its initial position, the universal bar 19 ra leads the bars 1 to their normal lowered position.
<I> Stop device for keyboard </I> amounts. The rightmost 1 bar is for printing and storing units, the next bar is for tens, and so on. The means for determining the height to which the bars 1 should rise comprises a fixed group of stops which may be of any desired construction, as, for example, that shown in U.S. Patent No. 1,198,487 and indicated by the number 42 in this patent. The stops are arranged in several columns, as are bars 1, ten stops are in each column.
A forward extending bar 20 is pivoted at the bottom of each bar 1; the front end of each bar 20 extends by sliding in one or opening of a pin 21 extending vertically. The pins 21 are guided for vertical movement in a slide 22, which is mounted on a stationary rod 23 to move transversely to the machine. The slide 22 is arranged to lift the pins 21 from their normal position or initial position towards the left side of the groups of stops, in the vertical planes of the columns of the stops.
The rear end of a stop which has been moved rearward, in the playing position, overhangs the transverse passage of the movement of the groups of pins 21. When a bar 1 is raised until that its pin 21 stops against the lowest stop, in a given column, said bar 1 is in position to perform printing and recording or one of these operations only of the number "0 ". The second stop from the bottom corresponds to the number "1" and so on.
The 1 bars for digital orders which are not required for printing or recording a given amount are prevented from rising above the printing position of a digit, by a pla que 24 trigger (fig. 1) placed to the left of the group of stops and guided to move horizontally forward and backward in the machine. This plate has an arm 25 which is pivoted at 26 to a lever in the form of a handle 27 (FIG. 10), this handle being pivoted on a rod 2,8. A hand spring 29 normally holds the plate 24 in its rear position with its rear edge protruding over the pins 21.
The means for pushing the stops rearward into position to limit the lifting movement of the pins 21 are well known in the art; it suffices to say that the lowering of a key of one. keyboard upright - of the machine sets up a corresponding stop on the path of a pin 21, so that the character bar associated with this pin can rise over a distance proportional to the quantity shown by the down key;
the slide 22 is advanced one row of digits to the right (as seen from the front of the machine) when the down key is released.
In normal operation of the machine, the stops are automatically returned to their normal position and the slides 22 return to the initial position at the end of the cycle of operations.
Main meter.
The main counter comprises a series of gears 30 (Figs. 1 and 5) mounted so as to. be able to rotate on a transverse shaft 31. The shaft 31 is supported so as to be able to slide longitudinally relative to the machine. The set of pinions 80 (in which there is a pinion for each bar 1) is placed between two sets of racks 32 and 33. A rack 32 and a mesh 33 are connected to each of the bars 1 in the manner which will be described, and the set of pinions is arranged to engage any set of racks.
When the pinions are out of gear, they are midway between the two sets of racks and are ready to be engaged with any play without preliminary or selective movement, as is. needed in some other types of china.
The addition is carried out by means of the set of racks 32. When a position has to be added, the pinions are moved forward in a neutral position between the two sets of racks, before the bars 1 are raised and they are moved back into engagement with the racks 32 just before the bars 1 are lowered. Therefore, the addition occurs during the downstroke of the racks 32, the amount of rotation of the pinions obviously depending on the amount of movement of the racks.
The subtraction is effected by means of the set of racks 33, the pinions being engaged with these racks just before the latter descend. The subtraction thus takes place during the downward stroke of the racks.
The upper end of each cre-mesh is fixed to part 7 extending towards the rear of one of the bars 1, by means of a pin having a head or a stud 34 (fig. 1) s 'extending through a vertically elongated opening provided in the rack. A compressible spring 36 fixed at its upper end, to the rack. and at its lower end, at a downwardly extending portion of portion 7, tends to move the rack downward relative to bar 1, a space of one tooth, for transfer.
The pinions 30 are engaged and out of engagement with the racks 32 and 33 by means of two rods 37 (fig. 2, 3 and 5) each disposed on one side of the machine, the front ends of these rods have supports to receive the ends of the shaft 31. The rear ends of the links 37 are pivoted at 3.8 to two arms 39 (FIG. 3) which are rigidly fixed to a shaft 40, which is journalled in the machine frame.
The means for oscillating the arms 39 to bring the pinions into engagement and out of engagement with the racks, comprise an arm 41 (fig. 2 and 3) which is rigid with the right arm 39 and which carries a pin 42, which engages the trimmed end of an arm 43. The arm 43 is fixed to a short shaft 44 which is journaled in the frame of the machine. An arm 45 is also fixed to this shaft. This arm 45 is set in oscillation by means of a lever 46 (FIG. 5) pivoted at 47, this lever having a cam notch 48 for receiving a pin 49 carried by the arm 45.
The lower portion of the cam notch 48 communicates the gear motion and reverse motion required during flow addition and totalizing operations, while the upper portion of the cam notch 48 produces the interlocking and unhinging movements relating to the operations of subtraction and totalization of credits. The lever 46 is oscillated with the aid of a connecting rod 50 having notches 51 and 52 in its opposite edges.
The notch 51 is intended to receive a bucket pile 53 carried by the cam lever 46, the notch 52 being intended to receive a cleat 54 of this lever. The cleats 53 and 54 are arranged on either side of the axis 47 and it can be seen that, when the connecting rod 50 is engaged with the pin 53, a vertical movement of the connecting rod 50 will cause the back and forth. - comes from lever 46 to operate the lower part of the cam groove 48 on the cleat 49, while when the connecting rod 50 is engaged with the pin, 54,
the lever 46 os will wiggle to cause the upper part of the groove 484th cam to function on the cleat 49 The connecting rod 50 is pivoted at one end of a swing arm 55, which is pivoted in the machine frame at 56. The other end of the oscillating arm 55 is pivoted to a connecting rod 57 having a notch 58 intended to receive a pin 59 carried by a lever 60. The latter lever is pivoted on an axis 61 in the frame of the machine and has a pin and notch connection with an arm 62 which is pivoted at 63.
The means for oscillating the lever 60 comprise an arm 64 (Fig. 9) fixed to the main oscillating shaft 15. A pawl 66 is pivoted at 65 on this arm and this pawl has two shoulders 67 and 68 and a hook 69. The pawl 66 is biased by a tension spring 70. A pin 71 is disposed on the lever 60, so as to be gripped by the shoulder 67 (fig. 5). A pin 72 is disposed on the arm 62, so that it can be grasped by the shoulder 68 (FIG. 6).
73 is a trigger (fig. 10) pivoted to the frame at 73a. It has two notches to receive a pin 73b carried by the oscillating arm 55. A spring (not shown) is attached to the trigger at point 73c, to keep the latter in engagement with the pin 73b. This spring-actuated detent makes it possible to suddenly move the cam lever 46 into its counter-gear or counter-de-gear position and to keep it in such a position.
Now consider fig. 5 which represents the various parts in their initial position, the pinions being in engagement with the racks 32 of addition. When the main swing shaft 15 begins to move forward, the arm 64 swings in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 5, then the shoulder 67 by engaging the pin 71 (assisted by the spring-loaded trigger 73) forces the lever 60 to rotate counterclockwise to the position shown in FIG.
6, so that the connecting rod 7 is raised and the connecting rod 50 lowered by oscillating the cam lever 46 downwards and thereby rapidly placing the pinions 30 in a neutral position between the two sets of racks. The pinions are thus put out of engagement with the mesh racks 32, just before the racks begin to rise by the value corresponding to the position indicated on the keypad.
As the arm 64 completes its upward stroke, the surface 74 of the pawl 66 engages the pin 72 of the arm 62, causing the pawl 66 to assume the position shown in FIG. 6.
During the return stroke of the winger shaft 15. the shoulder 68 of the pawl 66, by operating against the pin 72 (and assisted by the spring trigger 73), oscillates the arm 62 in the. position shown in fig. 5 by oscillating, via the links described above, the cam lever 46 in the position shown in fia. 5 and thus bringing the pinions 30 back into engagement with the racks 32.
This occurs quickly after the start of the return stroke of the arm 64 and during subsequent operations of the machine, the racks 32 descend, thus rotating the pinions 30 to accumulate on them the amounts indicated on. the keyboard.
Any desired means can be employed to prevent accidental rotation of the pinions while they are out of engagement with the racks.
<I> Taking </I> totals <i> said </I> counter <I> principal. </I> When a flow rate or a positive total (either partial or final total) is to be printed, the pinions are held in engagement with the racks 32 during the upward movement thereof. The means by which the upward movement of the arm 64 is made inactive for removing the pinions from the racks 32 will now be described with particular reference to FIG. 10.
A total key 75 and a partial total key 76 are carried by rods 77 and 78 respectively of keys. The lower ends of these rods are arranged so as to engage with handles 79 and 80 respectively, which are pivoted at 81 in the frame of the machine. The handles 79 and 80 are arranged so as to engage with the cleats 82, 83 on a totalizing slide 84 and respectively on a slide 85 of partial totals. Lowering the key 75 or 76 causes a forward movement of the corresponding slide 84 or 85.
A protruding part 86 is located on the totalizer slide 84, this protruding part being resiliently fixed by means of a tension spring 87, to an arm 88, pivoted in the frame of the machine at 89. The spring 87 holds normally a pin 90 of the arm 88 against a cleat 91 of the totalizing slide. An arm 92 is integral with the arm 88, this arm 92 being connected by means of a connecting rod 93 to the lower end of the connecting rod 57. It will be seen that by lowering the key 75 total, the arms 88 and 92 are forced to oscillate forward to remove notch 58 from pin 59 and to place edge 94 of connecting rod 57 against a pin 95 of lever 60, spring 87 flexing to allow key 75 to complete its downward movement.
In the next cycle of machine operations, arm 64 swings upward causing lever 60 to wiggle wildly counterclockwise, without imparting any movement to connecting rod 57, so that the pinions remain in engagement with the crisscrosses when they rise. When the lever 60 completes its movement in the anti-clockwise direction, the pin 95 comes into correspondence with a notch 96 of the connecting rod 57, then the spring 87 moves the notch into engagement with the pin.
When the lever 64 starts on its return stroke, the shoulder 68 of the pawl 66 engages with the pin 72 and causes the lever 60 to oscillate clockwise, lifting the connecting rod 57 and thus causing the withdrawal of the pinions of the racks 32 before the latter descend, thus leaving the pinions at zero or free. The end of the cycle for the final total flow leaves the gears neutral.
When a subtotal is to be taken, the subtotal key 76 is depressed thereby pulling the subtotal slider 85 forward. A pillar 97 is on this slide and engages with a pin 98 of the total slide and thus forces the connecting rod 57 to disengage from the pin 59 and to come into engagement with the pin 95, as described for the operation of the operations of taking a final total. However, as the pins are not released, they must remain in engagement with the racks 32 during the upward movement of the latter.
To achieve this, a cam surface 99 is seen on the upper end of the pillar 97 to engage with a cleat 100 of an arm 101 pivoted on an axis 102. An arm 103 is integral with the arm 101 and carries a cleat 104. As the subtotal slide 85 is pulled forward, the cam 99 places the cleat 104 in place to lower the pawl 66 as the arm 64 approaches its upper position. Therefore, when the arm 64 makes its return stroke, the shoulder 68 of the pawl cannot engage with the pin 72 and therefore the pinions are not withdrawn from the racks 32.
Near the end of the downstroke on arm 64, hook 69 engages pin 71, and when arm 64 completes its downward motion, hook 69 rotates lever 60 clockwise. shows, by lifting the connecting rod 57, lowering the connecting rod 50 and lowering the cam arm 46 and thereby moving the pinions 30 to the neutral position, this occurring a moment after the racks have returned to their normal lowered position. .
When a total is to be taken, either a final total or a subtotal, the trigger plate 24 must be moved forward to allow upward movement of the pins 21 attached to those bars 1 which are necessary for the printing of the total or of the partial total. For this purpose, each of the slides 84 and 85 (FIG. 10) have a cleat 105 which, when the slide is moved forward, engages an arm - a lever 106 pivoted at 107. The other arm The lever 106 engages an arm 108 which is integral with the handle 27.
It can thus be seen that when the total key 75 or the partial total key 76 is lowered, the trigger plate 24 will be pulled forward, out of position to limit the pins 21.
The total key and the partial total key, as well as several other operating control keys, are locked in the lowered position during a given cycle of machine operations, by means of a slide 109 (fig. 11) which can come and go along the machine and which has on it a series of cleats 110. Each bucket pile has a bevelled surface 111 and a locking shoulder 112 below this surface. A locking stud 113 is located on each key rod. When the key is lowered, it thus pushes the slide 109 forward to allow the stud 113 to engage under the shoulder 112, the slide 109 being withdrawn back by a spring 114.
Towards the end of the cycle of operations, the slide 109 is pulled forward to allow the key to be actuated by means returning the key. The latter consist of an angled lever 115 pivoted at 116, one arm of the angled lever engaging the touch rod and the other arm being pivoted at the forward end of a slide 117. The rear end of the slide is guided in the frame. An expansion spring 118 normally maintains slide 117 in its forward position, thereby keeping the key up. The slide 109 is pulled forward to release the lowered key by means comprising an elongated plate 119 which is pivoted along its upper edge to the machine frame.
The lower edge of the plate, on the right side of the machine, engages behind a cleat 120 <B> -de </B> the slide 109. Near the end of the cycle-operations, the plate 119 is tilted forward by means not shown, to allow the re-installation of the (ouches in their normal position:
When the total key 75 or the partial total key 76 is released as described, a spring 121 ,. (fig. 10) returns slide 84 -total or sub-total slide 85, as the case may be, to its normal rear position and withdraws cam 99 from pin 100, whereupon a spring 122 lifts pin 1.04 in his. inactive position.
Surgery <I> from. </I> no addition <I> in the </I> main coriaptetc.r. It is sometimes desirable to print an item without entering it into the main meter. This can be done by means of a non-addition key 123 (fig. 10), the rod 124 of this key being arranged to actuate a handle 125 similar to the handles 79 and 80.
The handle 125 is arranged to push forward a non-addition slide 126, which has a pillar 127. A cam surface 128 is provided on the upper end of the pillar <B> 127, </B> this surface being arranged to act on the stud 100. When the non-addition key 123 is lowered, the stud 104 is lowered into position to prevent the shoulder 68 of the pawl 66 from coming into engagement with the pin 72, as shown in fig. 7.
Therefore, the pinions 30, which are moved out of engagement with the chainrings 32, when the arm 64 begins to swing upward, remain in this withdrawn position as the arm 64 performs its return stroke.
When the arm 64 completes its downward or return movement, the hook. 69 engages with pin 71, as shown in FIG. 8, so that the pinions are engaged with the racks 32, once the latter have been returned to their lower normal position.
Around the. end of the cycle of operations, the non-addition key 123 is released by the plate 119 (fig. 11), whereupon the spring 129 (fig. 10) returns the non-addition slide 126 to its normal rear position and the spring 122 lifts the stud 104 to its inactive position.
M l ecanisin of carry forward or transfer.
The carryover or transfer mechanism can be of any kind desired. Shown here is a series of transfer devices for the racks 32 for transporting amounts from numerical order to directly higher numerical order in operations including addition, as well as a similar series of devices. transfer for the racks 33 to bring the amounts from a numerical order to the directly larger order in subtraction operations.
The value of the downward movement of the tens and upper racks is limited (except during transfer operations) by contact of the cleats 130 (fig. 15) on the racks with pawls 131.
When an amount is to be transferred from one order to the next higher order, the pawl 131 for the rack belonging to this higher order is withdrawn, allowing this rack to -lower under the action of its spring 36 (fig. 1), until its cleat <B> 130 </B> stops against a 132 bar.
The value of this new lowering of the rack is just enough to turn the pinion for this rack the distance of one tooth. The pawls 131 are pivoted on a rod 133 in the frame of the machine.
A hammer 134 is pivoted at the lower end of each pawl, this hammer having teeth 135 intended to engage the edge of the adjacent bar 132. A compressible spring 136 normally maintains teeth 135 in engagement with bar 132, pawl 131 then being in position to support the corresponding rack.
The means for disengaging the teeth 135 from the bar 132 consist of two diametrically opposed cleats 137 (Fig. 74) fixed to one side of each pinion. (Two 13'7 cleats are provided, because each pinion has twenty teeth.) When the amount registered by a pinion reaches 9, the continuous rotation of the pinion as its rack goes down, brings one of the cleats 137 against the end of hammer 7 :
34 associated with the next higher rack, lowering the hammer until its tooth 135 is released from the bar 132, whereupon the spring 136 (aided by the downward pressure of the next higher rack) pushes the hammer and pawl 1.31 - of the last indicated rack, the latter then lowers by one tooth under the influence of its output 36 until it is stopped by bar 132.
When any pinion is at zero, one of the cleats 137 of that pinion is directly below the end of one of the dogs 134 associated with, rack row 32, if the accumulated amount is a debit or a positive amount, or directly below the end of one of the dogs 134 associated with the group of racks 33, if the accumulated amount is a credit or a negative amount.
For this purpose, when a total is to be printed, that of the racks which mesh with the pinions at zero cannot be lifted, the remaining racks rising until the rotation of their pinions brings the cleats 137 in contact with the respective dogs. The 1 character bars are then in the printing position of the total amount accumulated on the pinions.
Introduction <I> of the unit </I> complementary. If a debit or positive amount has been accumulated in the main meter; and one or more amounts are subtracted - so as to leave a credit or negative total in the main meter, the true value of that credit or negative total cannot be printed until the credit or negative total has been increased by one.
Similarly, if a credit or negative total is transformed into a debit or positive total by adding amounts, the exact total cannot be printed without first adding a unit to that total. In other words, in order for the exact algebraic sum to be printed, it is necessary to introduce a unit (referred to as an "additional unit") in the main counter every time this main counter "crosses zero".
In order to do this automatically, means are provided which will now be described.
The unit rack 32 and the units rack 33 are arranged so as to be supported in the normal position by means of pawls 138 (fig. 14) which are pivoted on the rods 133 and which are arranged to support. the cleats 130 -of these unit racks.
When the main counter passes through zero, that is to say when it passes -from the positive condition to the negative condition, the complementary unit is introduced by withdrawal of the pawl 138 for the rack 32 of units, then the spring 36 for this rack moves the rack downwards, by the space of one tooth, and thus turns the pinion of the units of <B> there, </B> same distance.
The means for thus removing the pawl 13.8 at the moment when the main counter passes through zero, comprise two diametrically opposed cleats 139 (fig. 14) on the pinion of the highest order, these cleats being arranged to come. in engagement with a hammer 140 which is identical in shape to the dogs 134. The hammer 140 is supported so as to be able to pivot on the lower arm of a lever 141, which is pivoted on the rod 133.
The upper arm of the lever 141 is rigidly fixed to an arm 142, which is integral with the pawl 138 by the intermediary .d'une. plate 143.
Assuming that the amount accumulated or added by the actuation of the addition cranks 32 is "3", the unit pinion will then be having one of its cleats 137 three spaces below the zero position. -, on the addition side of the main counter, the corresponding cleats 137, of the other gears located directly below the ends of the dogs 134 on the same side, of the main counter.
The cleats 137 diametrically op posed are above the horizontal plane of the ends, dogs 134, the side of subtraction -of the main meter. Assuming that the number "5" is to be subtracted, the pinions are first disengaged from the racks 32, and after the unit rack 33 has been lifted to the position. for the recording of "5", the pinions are engaged with the-racks 33,
whereupon the unit rack 33 descends thereby rotating the units pinion by five tooth spaces. During this rotational movement, one of the cleats 137 of the unit wheel -is engaged with the end of the hammer 134 associated with, the rack 33 of the tens, producing the release of this hammer -of the bar <B> 132 </B> and thus allowing this rack to descend from the space of one tooth.
This tens rack being in engagement with the pinion of the diamines, the latter is obliged to turn by the space of one tooth, so that the bucket pile 137 of this tens wheel causes the dog to fall 134 for the rack of hundreds and so on, from pinion to pinion.
An impulse is thus transmitted from the pinion of the units to the pinion of the highest order, so as to place one of the cleats 137 on all the pinions, except on the pinion of the units, directly below the normal horizontal plane of the dogs 134 on the subtraction side of the main counter.
The rotation, thus communicated to the wheels of the highest order, serves to disengage the hammer 140 from the bar 132, whereupon the corresponding spring 136 causes the lever 141 to oscillate in a counterclockwise direction. , as seen in fig. 13, the movement of this lever being transmitted by the plate 143 and the arm 142 to the pawl 138, so that the mesh 33 of the units can descend an additional space of one tooth, thus artificially introducing the complementary unit.
<I> Replacing </I> duke <I> deferral mechanism. </I> After each transfer operation and after each introduction operation: of the complementary unit, -in the main counter, the pawl (s) 131, the hammer (s) 134 or the hammer (s) 140, as appropriate , are brought to the normal position by means of a rod 144 (Fig. 12), an ide these rods being provided for each set of transfer mechanism.
Each rod 144 is carried by two bent levers 145 (fig. 13) which are pivoted in the frame of the machine on the axes 133. The bent levers on each side of the machine are connected so as to have a simultaneous oscillating movement, by a pin and groove connection, as shown in cry 146.
The replacement rods 1.14 are moved simultaneously forward and away from each other, by means of: an arm 147 (fig. 1 and 13) on each of the two neck levers 145 forward , each of these arms being fixed by a pin and a groove with the front end. of a connecting rod 148. The rear end of each connecting rod 148 is fixed by a pin and a groove with an arm 149, which is pivoted to the frame of the machine, at 150.
A spring 1.51 (FIG. 1), fixed to one of the replacement rods 144, normally maintains these rods in their withdrawn position. A spring 152, connected to one of the arms 149, normally maintains a cleat 153 of each connecting rod 148 against a transverse rod 154 carried by a member in the form of a plate of the type of an arm 155, this member being pivoted on an axis 156.
The left end of the cross bar 154 extends into an elongated opening 157 made in the rear end of a connecting rod 1.58, the front end of this connecting rod being pivoted to the upper arm of a pivoted lever 159. in the machine frame. The lower arm of the lever 159 is provided with a roller arranged so as to be gripped by the left fork 17 during the upward oscillation of the latter.
It can thus be seen that any click and -dog that has been actuated in a transfer operation or in an operation of introduction -of the complementary unit, will be returned to their normal position at the beginning of the cycle. following operations.
When the character bars are lifted for a printing operation, the racks should not begin to rise until the studs 34 engage the upper ends of the extended openings 35.
However, those of the racks which have descended below the normal position, to effect a transfer or to introduce a complementary unit, rise almost at the same time as the character bars and are thus raised before the pawls 131 and 140 are brought back to the normal position by the rod 144.
In this way, the cleats 130 are suddenly lifted to allow the pawls 131 to be placed under them.
Execution <I> of a cycle </I> operations <I> mil or </I> spacing.
It will be seen that the machine is not to be put into action on a total take-up cycle of operations until the carry-over mechanism has been returned to the normal position. For this purpose, means are provided to ensure that the. machine is put on a zero cycle of operations, before the total take cycle is completed. During this zero cycle, the carry-over mechanism is returned to its normal position, if it has operated during the last preceding cycle.
The means for completing this zero cycle are subjected to the action of bar 1. Thus, if one or more bars 1 are lifted for recording or printing, the next cycle cannot be a one. total setting cycle;
but after a zero cycle (in which 1 bars are not lifted for printing), a total take cycle can be executed. The means for carrying out the zero or spacing cycle comprise a slide 160 (FIG. 16) mounted so as to be able to move back and forth along the machine along the slide 109. The slide 160 is projected before by a res sort 161.
Two cleats 1.62 and 163 are placed on the slide 160 in place to be located under the cleats 113 of the total key 75 and respectively of the partial total key 76, when the slide 160 is in its front position. This slide is normally maintained in its rear position by means comprising an arm 164, which is pivoted to the frame at 165. A cam cleat 16.6 is located on the lower edge of the arm 164. This cleat rests against a pin. 1.67 of the total blocking slide 160.
The arm 164 is. arranged so as to be lifted by a crank pin 168 carried by two cams 169 and 170 (Fig. 16), these cams being fixed on the oscillating shaft 15. The rear end. of the arm 164 rests on the .manneton 38. A spring 171 tends to move the arm 164 downwards.
When the oscillating shaft 15 performs its forward oscillation; arm 164 is raised, thereby raising cam 166 enough to allow spring 161 to pull forward fully locking slide 160 by an amount sufficient to prevent lowering of key 75 from full and key 76 from Subtotal. Thus, when a cycle of operations has started, the keys 75 and 76 can no longer be lowered.
During the return stroke of the wobble shaft 15, the downward movement of the pin 168 would allow the spring 171 to lower the arm 164 and thus bring the locking slide 160 back into position. inactive, if there was not a mechanism comprising an arm 172 pivoted at 173 and having a finger 174 which extends into an opening 175 formed in the arm 164.
The rear part of the opening 175 is of such a height that, when the finger 174 is in it, this finger cannot prevent the spring 171 from lowering the arm 164 and thus from bringing the slide 1-60 back. total blocking. The front portion of the opening 175 is, however, of reduced height such that, when the arm 174 is in this portion of the opening, the arm 164 cannot drop low enough to return the fully locking slide 160 into position. inactiye. 176 is a cleat provided on the lever 164 between the front and rear parts of the opening 175.
A spring 177 tends to make the arm 172 oscillate, to bring the finger 174 into the rear part of the opening 175. An arm 178 is integral with the arm 172 and carries a stud 179 which is located below several latches. 180 which order printing hammers 181.
The 1:81 hammers are pivoted on an axis 182 and are forced against the character by individual springs 183, which are anchored to a rod 184. The latches 180 are arranged to engage cleats 185 on the hammers. The latch 180 for each of the hammers for character bars 1 (except the latch of the highest order), has a cleat <B> 186 </B> being on the next 1o- quet to the left,
so that actuating any latch will actuate all lower order latches. There is a 1.87 pin on each bar of, character 1 and above the free end of an arm 188, which is pivoted to a rod 189 carried by a plate of the type of a pivoted arm 190. 173. A hand spring 191 normally holds the free end of the arm 188 in contact with the pin 187, this spring being connected to the latch 180.
When the character bar is raised enough to bring back, to the print line, the character for the number "1" or for any other higher number, a shoulder 188a (fig. 1) of the arm 188 is brought forward by a cleat 180a of the latch 180.
Lifting of the type bar takes place during the first half of a machine operating cycle. At the start of the second half of the cycle. the arm 190 oscillates in the anti-clockwise direction, as shown in fig. 1, by means of a link (not shown) with the cam 14, thus moving the arms 188 backwards.
It will be seen that when one or more of the character bars are raised to the printing position of "1" or higher, the backward movement of the corresponding arms 188 will oblige. the shoulders 188a engage with the cleats 180a and thereby disengage the corresponding latches 180 of the hammers for printing from the raised character bars.
This movement of the latch 180 also serves to lower the stud 179 and thus to move the finger 174 (fig. 16) in the front part of the opening 175, so that by continuing the return stroke of the oscillating shaft 15, this finger prevents the arm 164 from descending far enough to push back the slide 160 for total locking. The cleat 176 retains the finger 174 in the front part of the opening 175, so that at the end of the cycle in which the printing of the number "1" occurs at a higher number, the arm 164 is kept lifted by the finger 174 and the slide <B> 160 </B> the total locking remains in its front position.
It is thus impossible to lower the total key or the partial total key before the next cycle and therefore the following cycle cannot be a total setting cycle. If the operator wishes to take a total, he must activate the machine on a zero cycle of operations, that is to say a cycle in which no number is indicated on the keyboard. In the first half of the zero cycle, the crankshaft <B> 168 </B> lifts arm 164, thus freeing cleat 176 from finger 174.
Then, in the same half of the cycle, a cleat 192 (fig. 16) of the cam 170 engages with the end of a finger 193 of the arm 172 and moves this arm forward by placing the finger 174 in it again. the front part of the opening <B> 175. </B> In the second half or return exchange of the cycle, the spring 177 forces the finger <B> 193 </B>. To follow the cleat 192,. So that the finger 17.1 passes in the rear part of the opening 175 before.
that the crank 168 allowed the arm 164 to fall. In the last part of the second half of the cycle, the crank handle 168 allows the arm 164 to descend under the action of its spring 171, so that the total locking slide 160 is returned to the ineffective position, in thus allowing. a total or subtotal to be taken in the next cycle immediately.
The mechanism which has just been described for accomplishing a zero cycle before a totalization or partial totalization operation has no effect when the machine is operating under the control of the carriage. In this latter case, the stops of the carriage are placed to cause a zero cycle before each totalization or partial totalization cycle, or alternatively, if preferred, only when the reinstallation of the transfer mechanism is required.
Setting the. main sensor <I> for the </I> scnsstraction. Let us now return to Fig. 5. When the machine is free, the connecting rod 50 engages with the pin 53, the pinions 30 then meshing with the addition racks 32. The reciprocating movement of the connecting rod 50 will therefore place the pinions so as to engage them and disengage them with these racks. When an amount is to be subtracted, the connecting rod 50 is moved out of engagement with the pin 53 and in engagement with the pin 54.
The means for thereby moving the connecting rod 50 comprise an arm 194 (Fig. 11) pivoted on an axis 195 and having a forked lower end to engage with a pin 196 of the connecting rod 50. An arm 197 (Fig. 16) is integral with the arm 194. the lower end of this arm 197 being resiliently fixed to a subtraction slide 198, by means of a spring 199 (fig. 16 and 22) which normally maintains a shoulder 200 of the arm 197 against a pin 201 - slide 198.
A spring 202 (Fig. 11) normally maintains the subtraction slide 198 in its inactive rear position. The slide is pushed forward into the active position by means of a subtraction key 203, the key having a rod 204 which is arranged to actuate a handle 205, which engages a bucket pile 206 vertical to the front end of the subtraction slide 198.
When the touch <B> 203 </B>. Subtraction is lowered, the slide 198 is. drawn forward and kept forward by blocking the pull button in its lowered position, moving the connecting rod 50 until the edge 207 of the connecting rod stops against the pin 54 (fig 10 ), the pin 53 still being inside the notch 51.
During the next stroke forward of the oscillating shaft 15, the connecting rod 50 is lowered, causing the lever 46 to oscillate in the position shown in fig: 17, whereby the pinions 30 are put out of engagement. 'with the addition racks 32. As soon as the pin M has been raised enough to correspond with the notch 52, the spring 199 (fig. 22) moves the connecting rod 50 to engage this notch with this pin 54, as shown in fig. 17.
During the return stroke of the oscillating shaft 15, the connecting rod 50 is lifted, as shown in FIG. 18, by oscillating the lever 46 downwards, so as to. forcing the upper part of the cam notch 48 to act on the roller 49, whereby the pinions 30 are brought into mesh with the racks 33 under tension before the latter begins to lower.
When there is a credit total or a negative total or an overflow in the main counter and this total or overflow is to be printed, it is necessary to prevent the pinions 30 from meshing with the racks 32 of. addition, at the end of the zero or space stroke.
This can be achieved by keeping the under traction button down during the spacing stroke. However, since the operator cannot know that the total is negative and for the further reason that the machine is intended for automatic operation under the control of the paper carriage, means are provided for automatically maintaining the main counter - able to print a negative total, when it contains such a total.
These means comprise a slide sière 208 (FIG. 16) guided so as to come and go horizontally along the machine; this slide being pushed forward by a spring 209. At the rear end of the rail 208 is a cleat 210 which is g <B> o </B> arranged to engage with a vertical cleat 211 on the subtraction slide 198, in order to advance the subtraction slide into the effective position.
After each movement of the slide 208, it is returned to its normal rear position by means of the cam <B> 169 </B> -of the oscillating main shaft 15, this cam coming. meshed with a roller stud 212 mounted on slide 208 near the end of the swing shaft reverse stroke. Slide 208 is prevented from operating to push subtraction slide 198 into the active position, except when there is a credit balance or overflow in the machine.
A slide 213, movable transversely to the machine, carries a locking pin 214 which is arranged to lie on the path of a shoulder 215 <B> -de </B> the slide 208, to prevent this slide from moving over an inactive distance under the influence of its res- sori 209. A spring 216 fixed to the slide 21 tends to move the latter to the left- che to put the stud 214 out of the pitch of the shoulder 215.
When there is a debit balance in the machine, the slide 213 is prevented from moving under the influence of its spring 216 to release the slide 208 by means of a stop arm 21 "( fig. 12 and 16) fixed to an arm of an angled lever 218, which is pivoted on an axis 219. The other arm of the angled lever 218 is, arranged to be moved by the levers 141. A connecting rod 220 has a fixing pin and groove with the two levers 141 and is pivoted at the elbow lever 218, as shown in Fig. 12.
When the main counter changes from the positive side to the negative side of zero, the arm 141 shown at the right side of FIG. 13 pushes the connecting rod 220 to the left, as can be seen in this figure, by tilting the elbow lever .in the direction of lowering, of the stop arm 217 out of the passage of the slide 213;
and when the main counter goes through zero in the opposite direction, the lever 141 shown to the left of FIG. 12 pushes the connecting rod 220 to the right to place the stop arm 217 in the path of the slide 213. Thus, when there is a positive or debit balance in the machine, the slide 213 is held by the stop 217 in position to prevent slide 208 from setting the main counter for negative operation;
and when there is a credit balance in the machine, the slide 213 may move to the left under the influence of the spring 316, so as to release the slide 208 for actuation of the subtraction slide 198. . The slide 213 is moved to the right into a position where it can be held by the stop arm 217, by means of an arm 221 (Fig. 16) attached to the arm 45 and arranged to operate against a surface of. cam 222 of the. slide 213. As the addition occurs, arm 221, acting on cam surface 222, pushes slide 213 to the right.
Assuming there is a credit balance in the machine, stop arm 217 will be found. lowered as in the fi-. <B> 13 </B> and 16, so not in position to prevent slide 208 from adjusting the machine for the <B>, </B> subtraction. Assuming that it is desirable to add an amount, it will be seen that means must be provided to prevent the slide 208 from setting the machine for subtraction.
These means include a stop slide <i> 223 </I> (Fig. 16) which is pushed to the right by spring means (not shown) into position to place a cleat 224 on the path of the front end of the slide 208.
The left end of the slide 223 is made sensitive to the inscription of an upright on the keyboard, by means of a stop connection with the stop mechanism, so that the The actuation of the first digit key of any amount will allow: the means: spring to move the slide 223 to the right to place the cleat 224 on the passage of the slide 208.
<I> Taking a </I> total credit <I> or </I> of a <I> total </I> partial. For manual setting of the main counter to take a total credit or a partial total, the total key or the partial total key is lowered just as for taking a total debit or partial total. If the total is a credit amount, the exact negative total will be printed.
<I> Counters </I> secoMnires.
The machine shown has four secondary counters A., B, C and D (fis. 1). Each counter comprises a series of pi gnons 225 having ten teeth each and tines. To mesh with a set. Of straight racks 226. These counters are arranged in a series extending along the racks 226.
The counter pinions are always in the planes of the rack, ready to engage or to be taken out of engagement and do not require any preliminary or selective movement. The-racks 226 are guided in the rear part of the frame of the machine for a vertical reciprocating movement and are fixed at their lower ends to the levers 227, which are pivoted on the axis 11.
A traction spring 22.8 is provided for each lever 227, this spring connecting this lever to one of the levers 10. The rear end of the lever 10 is forked to receive a stud 229 with a head, carried by the lever 227. Addition occurs during the upstroke of the racks 226.
The initial position of these racks is determined by the transfer mechanism which, in this case, comprises a stationary member 230 (fi-. 1) arranged to be gripped by a cleat 231 -of the rack of the units, and a series of re port levers 232 (fis. 24) pivoted on the axis 150, one arm of each of these levers being arranged to serve as a stop for the cleat 281 of the cranks of the order higher than that of. units. Individual springs 233 for the transfer levers 232 tend to oscillate these levers in the direction allowing movement. of postponement -of the racks 226.
The levers are normally prevented from effecting this movement, by means of shoulders 234 formed on return slides 285, these slides alternating with the racks 226. The shoulder 234 is gripped by an angular cleat 236 -du transfer lever. Below the shoulder 234 is a cam surface 237. Each of the slides 235 serves to control the corresponding pinions of all the secondary counters and for this purpose it is provided with four cleats 238 arranged to be gripped by -strips 239. of transfer of the pinions 225.
When any of these pinions passes through the zero position, the transfer cleat 239 lifts the adjacent restart cleat 238, as in FIG. 24, by lifting the transfer slide 235, enough to remove the locking shoulder 234 out of engagement with the transfer lever 232 which has limited the rack of the directly higher order, whereupon the spring 233 for this transfer lever causes the lever to oscillate counterclockwise., the cleat 236 acting on the.
surface 237 for lifting the transfer slide 235 until the lever stops against a shoulder 240 of the transfer slide. This movement of the transfer lever 232 is just sufficient to allow the corresponding rack 22.6. To rise from the space of one tooth under the traction of its spring 22.8, by rotating the pinion of the order. directly higher, by a corresponding distance.
This transfer movement occurs at the end of the cycle of operations, the transfer mechanism being returned to the initial position during the first part of the cycle immediately following operations, by means of the arm 155 acting to advance the operations. slides 148, as previously described.
The advancement of the slides 148 forces the arms 149 è, os blink forward - forcing the transverse bar 241 extending between these arms. To oscillate the levers <B> 232 </B> -of transfer in the direction of clockwise, as shown in fig. 24, by lowering the rack or racks 226 which were involved in the previous transfer operation.
When the transfer levers 32 are thus returned by oscillation to their initial position, the transfer slides 235 are lowered by their individual springs 242, so that the locking shoulders 234 are placed behind the lower ends of the levers 232 to maintain these in their initial position.
The springs 242 are not as effective as the springs 233 and therefore do not prevent the latter from lifting the transfer slides, when the shoulders 234 are free from the cleats 236.
As there is only one set of transfer units for the four secondary counters, only one of these counters can be used at the same time. Each of the secondary counters is engaged -and out of engagement with the racks 226, by means of two racks 243 (FIG. 23), fixed to the meter and supported so as to be able to slide horizontally along the machine. .
The two racks 243 mesh with partial pinions 244 which are integral with a shaft 245. A crank arm 246 is carried by the right end of the shaft 245, this arm being fixed by means of 'a connecting rod 247, to a member 248. This organ is supported so as to be able to come and go along the machine by being suspended in the frame of the machine by means of two parallel connecting rods 249.
Each connecting rod 247 has a releasable connection with the arm 348, consisting of a notch 250 formed in the connecting rod to receive a pin 2151 of the member 248. A tension spring 252 tends to hold the connecting rod 247 with the rod. pin 251 in the notch 250. The member 248 comes and goes to place the selected secondary counter in engagement and out-of engagement with the meshes 226, by means of a lever 253 pi voted in 56 and presenting. at its rear end a cam groove 254 in which extends a stud 255 carried by the member 248.
The lever <B> 253 </B> (fi, -. 23) is oscillated by means comprising a connecting rod 256, which is pivoted to the front arm of the lever 253. This connecting rod has a notch 257 to receive a pin 258 of a lever 259, which is rotated within the machine frame at 260. Lever 259 has a pin and groove attachment with an arm 261 which is pivoted at 63. Means for oscillating lever 259 include arm 13 (Fig. 23). ) frozen on the oscillating main shaft 15. A pawl 262. is pivoted on this arm and is similar to pawl 66.
The pawl 262 has two shoulders 263 and 264 and a hook 265. The pawl is subjected to the action of a tensile force 266. A pin 267 is placed on the lever 259, so as to be gripped. by the shoulder 263. A pin <B> M </B> is on arm 261 to be gripped by shoulder 264.
A 2-69 trigger, pivoted in the machine frame at 270, has two cam sizes in it to accommodate a pin 271 attached to the front end of the cam lever 253. A spring 272, attached to the trigger, hand holds the latter in engagement with this pin. This spring actuated trigger facilitates the sudden movement of lever 253 in one or other of its positions and maintains it in such a position.
When the secondary counters are disengaged with the racks 226, they are prevented from accidentally turning by the engagement of the pinions with blades. <B> 273 </B> (fig. 1) frozen to the frame of the machine.
Choice <I> from </I> designer <I> secondary desired. </I>
It is necessary to choose the desired secondary counter before each cycle in which a secondary counter is used. For this purpose, all the secondary meters: e are normally in their rear or withdrawn position, as seen in fig. 1, except when one of these counters has been used in the directly preceding cycle.
In this case, this counter is in its forward or engaged position, at the start of the next cycle. The means for choosing the secondary counters comprise four keys, all similar to the single key shown at 274 in FIG. 23. Each of these keys acts on a handle 275. Slides 276 (only one of which is shown) are provided for the handles 275.
Each of the slides 276 has a shoulder 277 (fig. 23) which rests against a cleat 278 of a handle, the shackle for the counter A being designated by 279 and the remaining handles being numbered 280, 281 and 282 (fig. 4). An individual res spell 283 tends to make the handles oscillate downwards and connect the frozen slide towards the rear. Each handle 279, 280, <B> 281 </B> and 282 is fixed to its respective connecting rod 247 by a connecting rod 284 (FIGS. 4 and 23), a pin and groove connection being provided between each connecting rod 284 and its respective connecting rod 247.
It will be seen that lowering a selection key of the auxiliary meter will raise the corresponding connecting rod 284, so that the pin 285 is in the lower part of the groove 286.
To the. fig. 23, 287 are pins fixed to the frame in position to lie directly in front of the connecting rods 247, when the counters are in the withdrawn position and thus maintain them in such a position.
Assuming that no secondary counter was used in the previous cycle and that it is desired to use counter A in the following cycle, the key 274 for selecting counter A is lowered, as shown in fig. . 23, the corresponding connecting rod 284 thus being raised until the pin 2.85 4e the upper connecting rod 247 is in the lower part of the groove 286.
When the swing shaft 15 begins to oscillate forward, the arm 13, aided by the trigger 269 actuated by a res comes out, moves the lever 259 counterclockwise, this movement occurring very rapidly in the forward stroke, the movement of the lever 259 being transmitted by the pin 258 to the connecting rod 25.6 and thus to the cam lever 2153, - so that the rear end - of this cam lever 253 is lowered and organ 248 moved backwards,
by bringing the upper pin 251 into correspondence with the notch 250. Thereafter, the spring 252 lifts the connecting rod 247 to place the pin and the notch in engagement with each other. During the return stroke of the oscillating shaft 15, the shoulder 264, acting on the pin 268 and aided by the trigger 269 actuated by a spring, forces the lever 259 to oscillate in the direction of the bguilles:
in one example, the movement of this lever being transmitted to the cam lever 253 to lift this lever into the position shown in FIG. 23. The member 248 is thus moved forward very early in the return stroke, taking with it the connecting rod 247 and thus placing the counter A in mesh with the racks 226 an instant before the latter start there. to raise.
The cycle is finished with counter A still engaged with the racks but, at the end of the cycle, button 274, for selecting counter A, is released by the forward movement of slide 109 (fig. 11), on whereby the spring 2-83 moves the slide 276, the shackle 279 and the corresponding connecting rod 284 to their normal positions by the value allowed by the highest pin 2.87, on which the connecting rod 247 then rests, as shown in fig. 23.
If counter A is not used in the next cycle, member 248 is moved backward at the start of the forward stroke of the oscillating shaft 15, as previously described, so that the connecting rod 247 is pushed back to remove the counter A before the racks 226 descend. As soon as the forward end of the corresponding slide 247 has moved past the uppermost pin 287, the spring 283 completes the return of the slide 276.
The shackle 279, the corresponding connecting rod 284 and the connecting rod 247, of the counter A are returned to their initial positions, so that this connecting rod 247 is released from the member 248. The spring 283 is stronger than the spring 252.
Any suitable means, not described here, may be employed to prevent more than one choice key 274 of the counter being used at the same time.
<I> Taking </I> of a <I> total of one </I> counter <I> secondary. </I> Now let's take a look at taking a subtotal or a final total from a secondary counter. As heretofore explained, the end of a cycle of operations in which a secondary counter has been employed leaves that rear counter engaged with the racks 226.
If a total is to be taken from that particular meter, in the next cycle the meter will mesh with the racks, but if a total is to be taken from one of the other secondary meters,
this counter will not be in engagement with the racks 226 and therefore zero or spacer travel must be taken to place this secondary counter in engagement with the racks before the latter begin to descend.
In order to safeguard the uniformity of the operation, means are provided for this purpose to cause a zero cycle before taking a total of any secondary counters. These means are those which have already been described with regard to the main counter. They are shown in fig. 16, in which it is seen that the total key 288 and the partial total key 289 for the secondary counters have key stems which are arranged to be blocked by the total blocking slide 160, in the manner previously described.
Before taking a total from a secondary counter, the counter selection key for that counter is lowered by lifting the corresponding connecting rod 284. If this particular counter was used in the previous cycle, its connecting rod 247 will still be in operation. taken with the corresponding pin <B> 251 </B> of member 248, and during the zero or spacer cycle, the connecting rod 247 will move back and forth to remove the counter from the racks 226 and to row the counter to those racks.
If, on the other hand, this particular counter was not used during the directly preceding cycle, it will be engaged with the racks 226 during the last half of the space cycle. The total locking slide is also withdrawn in its rear or inactive position, during the last half of the spacing cycle.
The desired total or partial total key 288 or respectively 289 can then be depressed. The selected counter being in engagement with the racks 226, it is desirable that it remains in engagement with these racks during their downward movement. The means by which the upward movement of the arm 13 is made inactive to remove the counter from the racks, comprises a total slide 290 and a partial total slide 291 (Fig. 25),
arranged to be pushed forward by handles 292 actuated by the rods of the keys 288 and 289 respectively. A part 293 of the total slide 290 is resiliently fixed by a res out 294 to an arm 295 pivoted to the frame of the machine at 296. A pin 297 of the arm 295 is normally held against a cleat 298 of the entire slide, by the res out 294. An arm 299 is integral with the arm 295 and is connected by a connecting rod 300 at the lower end. of connecting rod 256.
Obviously, lowering the key 288 all the way will cause the arms 295 and 299 to oscillate forward to remove the notch 257 from the. pin 258 and to press the edge 301 of the connecting rod 266 against a pin 302 of the lever 259, the spring 294 flexing to allow the key 288 to complete its downward movement. In the next cycle of the total setting operations, the arm 13 rises, making the lever 259 oscillate, madly, in a counterclockwise direction, producing no movement of the connecting rod 256.
Consequently, the selected secondary counter remains in engagement with the racks when the latter descend. As lever 259 completes its counterclockwise movement, pin 30 <B> 2 </B> matches a notch 303 of the connecting rod 256, whereupon the spring 294 engages the notch with the pin.
As the arm 13 starts on its return stroke, the pawl 2.62 engages the pin 268 and oscillates the lever 259 clockwise, which raises the connecting rod 256 and forces the speedometer to be removed from the front racks 226: that the latter do not rise, thus leaving the secondary counter at zero or free.
When a subtotal is to be taken, the subtotal key 289 is depressed, which advances the subtotal slider 291. A pillar 304 sits on this slide and is placed behind a pin 305 of the slide 290 total and thus forces the connecting rod 256 to disengage from the pin 258 and engage with the pin 302, as described for taking the slide. 'a final total.
However, as the counter is not free, it must remain in mesh with the racks 22-6 during their movement: upward. For this purpose, we see a cam surface 306 on the upper end of the pillar 304 to engage with a cleat 307 of an arm 308 pivoted on the axis 102. An arm 309 integral with the arm 308 carries a stud 310. As the subtotal slide 291 is moved forward, the cam 306 places the stud 310 in place to lower the pawl 362, as the arm 13 approaches its upper position.
As a result, when the arm 13 performs its reverse stroke, the shoulder 264 of the pawl cannot engage with the pin 268 and for this the counter is not removed from the mesh rings 226.
Near the end of the return or down stroke of arm 13, hook 2165 engages pin 267 and when arm 13 completes its return movement, this hook rotates lever 259 clockwise. watch, thereby lifting the connecting rod 256 and lowering the cam lever 253, and thereby removing the counter from the racks, immediately after the racks have returned to their upper normal position.
When the cycle ends, the plate 119 (fig. 11) pushes the slide 109 forward, releasing the subtotal key 289, whereupon the subtotal slide 291 (fig. 2-5) is moved back. in its initial position, by means of a spring 311 (fig. 25). This return of the subtotal slide allows a spring 312 (Fig. 25) to lift the non-addition and subtotal stud 310 to the inactive position.
Returning the subtotal slide 291 to the normal position also allows a spring 313 (fig. 25) to return the total slide 290 to the normal position and oscillate the connecting rod 256 out of engagement with the pin. 302, by placing the edge 314 of this connecting rod against the pin 258.
When a total is to be printed, be it a final total or a subtotal, the trigger plate 24 (fig. 1) must be moved forward to allow the upward movement of the pins 21 fixed to them. 1 bars that are required to print the total or subtotal.
For this purpose, the slides 290 and 291 (fig. 25) are arranged in their forward movement, to engage with the lever 106, whereby the trigger plate 24 is pulled forward out of position for prevent the pins 21, as previously described.
<I> Employment </I> siynultaneous <I> counters. </I>
The following combinations of operations can be performed: a) Addition can occur simultaneously in the main meter and in any selected secondary meter. b 1 Subtraction can occur in the main meter and addition can occur simultaneously in any selected secondary meter.
c) The total can be taken from any secondary counter and transferred (ie added to the total already contained) to the main counter, leaving this counter free.
d) The total may be taken from any secondary counter and reported (ie added to the total already contained) to the main counter, the total being kept in said secondary counter.
e). The total can be taken from any secondary meter and reported under tension (that is to say subtracted from the total already contained) to the main meter, leaving this secondary meter free.
f) The total can be taken from any secondary meter and reported under tension (i.e. subtracted from the total <B> already </B> content) to the main meter, the amount being retained -in this secondary meter.
g) The total (whether a positive or negative number) can be taken from the main meter and carried over (ie added) to any secondary meter chosen, leaving the main meter free.
h) The total (whether a positive or negative number) can be taken from the main meter and carried over (i.e. added) to any secondary meter, the amount being kept in the main counter.
i) The total can be transferred from any secondary meter to the main meter and then transferred to any one at the secondary meter, leaving the first secondary meter free.
j) The total can be transferred -from any secondary counter to the main counter and then transferred to any one of the secondary counter, the total being kept in the first mentioned secondary counter.
By carrying out operation a), the station is entered on the keypad, the counter choice key for the desired secondary counter is lowered and the motor lever is also lowered, whereupon the machine is forced to perform a cycle of operations to add said item to the main meter and to the selected secondary meter.
By executing operation b), the same phases are performed as for operation a), except that the subtraction key 208 is lowered at the same time as the counter selection key.
By executing operation c), the following phases are carried out: 1o The counter selection key is lowered for counter A, for example.
20 'The motor lever is lowered, so that the machine performs a cycle to put the counter A in engagement with the racks 226 and to move back the slide sière 160 of total locking, to unlock the total keys. The main counter is not operated during this cycle, as the character bars are kept lowered by the trigger plate 24.
30 The total 288 key for the secondary counter is down.
40 The motor handle is lowered, whereupon the machine cycles to take a final total of counter A, a corresponding movement being communicated to the gears of the main counter, @ so that the released total of counter A is added to the main counter.
Operation d) is performed exactly like operation c), except that in the third phase, the subtotal key 289 for the secondary counter is down, instead of the total key 288.
By performing operation e), the same steps are performed as for operation c), except that the subtotal key 208 is lowered together with the total key 288 for the secondary counter.
Operation f) is performed like operation d), except that the subtract key is lowered together with the subtotal key 289 for the secondary counter.
By executing operation g), the following phases are carried out: 1o The joystick. of the motor is lowered to make the machine perform a zero cycle, so as to. unlock keys total.
\? o The counter selection key for the desired secondary counter is lowered and at the same time the total key 75 for the main counter is lowered; <B> 30 </B> The motor lever is lowered, whereupon the machine cycles through operations to take a final total from the main counter and at the same time add the amount in the selected secondary counter.
When executing operation h), the phases performed are the same as those for operation g), except that the partial total key 76 is lowered instead of the total key.
By executing operation i) (assuming that the counter is free), the following phases are carried out: 1o The key for selecting the secondary counter is lowered, for example for counter A.
The lever, of the motor, is lowered, whereupon the machine cycles to place the counter A in engagement with the racks 22.6 and to move back the slide 160 - total blocking, so as to unlock the total keys. . The main counter should not run during this cycle, because the character bars are kept lowered by the expansion plate 24.
30 The total key 288 is lowered.
4 () The motor lever is lowered, causing the machine to cycle to take a final total from counter A, a corresponding movement being communicated to the gears of the main counter, so that the total released from the counter .4 is added to the main meter. The slide 160, fully locked, returns to its active position.
50 The motor lever is lowered to cause the machine to perform a zero cycle in order to move back the total blocking slide 160 to release the total keys. The main counter is not activated during this cycle, as the character bars are kept lowered by the trigger plate 24.
60 The selection key of a second secondary counter is simultaneously lowered, for example for counter B, and the total key 75 for the main counter.
70 The motor lever is lowered, so that the machine performs a cycle. During the first half of this cycle, the main counter is turned to zero, the meshes 226 being lowered in a corresponding manner.
In the second half of this cycle, the main counter is disengaged with its racks and counter B is engaged with its racks, and as the racks 226 rise, the value which has been transferred from counter A to the main counter is added to counter B.
By executing operation j), the same phases are carried out. than by executing operation i), except that in the third phase, the partial total key 289 is lowered instead of the total key 288.
No addition <I> in the </I> secondary counter. When carrying out operations through, columns (cross-tabulating), it sometimes happens that the machine is placed to introduce amounts into a certain secondary counter in two successive column positions, but that it is not It is not desirable to enter an amount in the counter of the second of these positions.
For this reason, a non-addition key 315 is provided (fig. 95), the rod of which is arranged for. operate a handle <B> 316, </B> which in turn is arranged to advance a slide. 317 of non-addition, having a bearing 318. This pillar has at its upper end a cam surface 319 arranged to act on the stud 307.
Before the carriage is moved to the position of the column in which the operator wishes to proceed with the introduction of an amount in the secondary meter, the operator lowers the non-addition key. The pin 310 is thus lowered into position to prevent the shoulder 264 of the pawl 262 from engaging with the pin 268, as shown in Fig. 25.
When the carriage reaches this column position and the machine begins the cycle of operations, the selected secondary counter is withdrawn from the racks 226 at the start of the upward movement, from the arms 13 by the rearward movement of the member 248, as will be understood from FIGS. 4 -and 23.
Upon movement, return or lowering of the arm 13, the pin 310 renders the pawl 262 powerless and therefore the secondary counter remains in its withdrawn position until the hook 265 engages the pin 267, when the arm 13 completes its downward or return movement, whereby the lever 259 is rotated clockwise, lowering the connecting rod 256, raising the cam lever 253, making advance member 248 and thus bring the secondary counter back into engagement with the racks,
although this counter was used during this particular cycle.
Blocking <I> between </I> keys total.
It is desirable to prevent the lowering of any of the total keys of the secondary counter, when one of the keys 75 and 76 total for the main counter has been lowered, and vice versa.
Locking means (not shown) are provided for this purpose, by means of which the lowering of any of the total keys mentioned above serves to lock the rest of these keys in their upper or inactive position, until the first key is released.
<I> Order of </I> functions <I> of the </I> machine <I> by the cart. </I>
The machine comprises -means available to be actuated by the paper carriage to control the counters and certain other mechanisms of the machine, in order to automatically determine the character of any given cycle and thus the nature and the continuation - cycles carried out during the working day.
The carriage exerts this control by pivoted members which can be called "selectors" and which, in the present case, have the form of levers pivoted on the axis 320 (fig. 10). The selectors are grouped in a compact manner at the rear end of the machine and below the path traveled by a control plate attached to the carriage. In the machine shown, there are seventeen selectors, twelve of which are shown in FIGS. 10, 11, 23 and 25, the other selectors being similar in all points; of view.
The selector closest to the front of the machine activates the row spacing mechanism. The second, numbered 321 (fig. 11), sets the machine to perform a subtraction in the main counter. The third, 3'22 in fig. 10, set the ma chine so as not to add (effect non-add) in the main -counter. The fourth (323) sets the machine to take the final total of the main counter. The fifth (â24) sets the machine to take a subtotal from the main counter.
The sixth, 325 @ in fig. 25, sets the machine to take a final total from any secondary counter that is in use. The seventh (326) sets the machine to take a total of any secondary counter that is in use. The eighth (327) sets the machine to not add (to perform non-add) in any secondary meter that is in use. The ninth (328) (fig. 23) sets the machine to put counter D into use.
The tenth (329) sets the machine to put counter C into use. The eleventh (330) sets the machine to put counter B into use. The twelfth (331) sets the machine to put the -counter A into use. The thirteenth command prints the numbers and the leaves. The fourteenth commands the repetition of the printing of an amount. The fifteenth orders the repeated printing of the folio. The sixteenth forces the drive clutch to come into action and the seventeenth sets the machine not to print the upright.
Each selector carries a member intended to be gripped by a cooperating member of the control plate forming part of the cha riot. In the case of all the selectors, except the subtraction selector and the engine repeat selector, this member consists of a roller 332 (fig. 10 and 25) which is resiliently supported on the selector by an angled lever 333 pivoted in. 334 and maintained in normal relation with respect to the selector, by means of a spring 335,
this spring maintaining a pin (not shown) of the elbow lever against a fixed part of the selector.
In the case of the subtraction selector and the motor repetition selector, the part which is gripped by the carriage consists of a member 336 (fig. 11) pivoted at 337 to an angled lever 338, which is pivoted by the selector. at 339. A spring 340 maintains the elbow lever in the normal position. The member 336 has a cam surface 341 and a square shoulder 342. This member is maintained in the normal position by a spring. 343, the action of this spring being limited by the contact of a suitable cleat of this member with a pin of the crank lever 338.
Figs. 26 and 27 show, on a larger scale, the lower right-hand part of FIG. 25.
<I> Control plate. </I>
A control plate 344 (Fig. 23) is integral with the paper carriage and extends along this carriage occupying a horizontal plane. Plate 344 is intended to support a series of actuators (Fig. 25). Each control member has the form of an elongated support for stops and is made of a metal sheet folded over to form two vertical walls and a bottom connecting these walls. The actuators 345 are supported on the carriage to extend transversely to the direction of travel of the carriage.
The control member is fixed in an adjustable manner to the. control plate 344, by means shown herein as comprising a series of notches 346 (Fig. 23) formed in the rear edge of control plate 344, to receive the front edges of portions 347 extending towards. the top of the side walls of the control elements. A bar 348 (Fig. 25) is fixed to the lower side of the control plate 344 near the front or internal edge of this plate.
The rear and bottom sides of the bar 348 are grooved to receive the front edges of the side walls, as well as the upper edges of the front portion of the controller which is notched to receive the bar. The control member is fitted to the control plate 344 by means consisting of an arm 349 pivoted to the part 347 in 350 and intended to be fitted against the top of the control plate by means of a nut 351 screwed on a screw, which is linked to an arm manufactured with the arm 349.
The nut 351 is arranged to exert its pressure against the rear end of the control member and thus to force the arm 349 downwards against the control plate. A plate is attached to the top surface of the control plate, such that it constitutes a shoulder 352 which is gripped by a locking shoulder of the arm 349.
* The control member is intended to ren close one or more stops arranged at desired points along its length. Each stopper consists of a block intended to fit inside the actuator and a stopper 3i53 (Fig. 25) is intended to protrude through any of the openings in the stopper. 'a series of openings in the bottom of the control member.
It will be seen that the stopping cleats 353 .des various control members are -disposed on the control plate 344 to move with the carriage in several parallel paths, these paths being in the respective vertical planes of the selectors on the machine frame. The upper parts of the peripheries of the rollers 332 and the inclined surfaces 341. of the members 336 protrude into the paths of the stop strips 353.
We see by this that the contact of the stop buckets with these rollers 332 and with their bodies 336, will cause the lowering: of the selectors, this movement of the selectors: being used to carry out the previously defined control of the functions of the machine .
<I> Command of the. substraction </I> to <i> average </I> <I> of the cart. </I>
Remember that the machine is set to perform the subtraction: in the main counter by advancing the. slide 198 (fig. 11). 357 is an angled lever pivoted on an axis 358, an arm of this angled lever being arranged to engage with the slide <B> 198 </B> to advance the latter and the other arm supporting a pin 356 which is located below the selector 321.
For each column position where under tension must take place, a stopping block 353 is provided on the carriage to cause the lowering of the selector 321. During the travel: of the carriage return, it is not : it is desirable to move the connecting rod 50 out of engagement with any of the pins 53 or 54 with which it can engage. From there, the member 33'6 (fig. 11) is mounted -de so as to be able to lend, when a cleat comes into contact with it., During the return movement of the carriage.
The carriage is required to exert considerable force in setting the machine for subtraction. In order to reduce shock and to cause a more even application of force, the active side of member 336 is bevelled, as shown in Fig. 11.
Cammande <I> by </I> cart <I> of the </I> no addition <I> in the </I> main counter. The non-addition operation in the main counter is performed by placing the cleat 104 (Fig. 10) in place to make the pawl 66 inactive at the start of the swing shaft return stroke.
The cleat 104 is placed in this position by means of the cam 128 of the non-addition slide 126. This slider is arranged to be moved forward into the active position by an arm of an angled lever 357 pivoted on the axis 358,
the other arm of this angled lever supporting a pin 369 which is arranged to be lowered by selector 322. For each column position in which a non-addition is to be made. take place in the: main counter, the carriage is provided with a stopper 853 to lower the selector 822.
Ordered <I> per carriage of the total </I> final <I> to </I> <I> from the counter </I> main.
To set the main counter to take a final total, the total slide 84 (Fig. 10) is moved forward. The carriage is arranged to perform this forward movement by means of an angled lever 360, pivoted on the axis 358 and placed between the total slide 84 and a pin 361. The pin 361 is arranged to be lowered by the selector. selector 323. One or more paper carriage stop cleats 353 lower the selector 323 for those of the column positions where a final total is to be taken from the main counter.
<I> Order by trolley of the </I> total <I> partial to </I> <I> from the counter </I> main.
To move the slide 85 of the subtotal (fig. 10) forward: in the active position, an angled lever 362 is pivoted -on axis 358, a pin 363 transmitting the force from -the selector 324 to the lever angled 362. One or more stop strips 353 are placed on the paper carriage in positions corresponding to the columns in which subtotals from the main counter are to be printed, these stop blocks acting on the selector 324.
In the machine shown, the total slide 84 must be moved forward whenever the subtotal slide 85 is advanced. To lighten the load on the spring 335 (fig. 10) of the partial total selector 324, the total selector 323 is also lowered, whenever a partial total is to be taken from the main counter,
the necessary stop 353 being provided on the control plate 344. FIG. 10 shows the two selectors 323 and 324 in their lowered position. <I> Choice by the carriage of counter A. </I>
Counter A is chosen by advancing slide 276 (fi, -. 23). The carriage is arranged to produce this movement by means of an angled lever 364, pivoted at 358 and receiving its movement from the selector 331 by a pin 365. When a station must be introduced into the secondary counter A and when a total is to be transferred from the main counter to counter A, the counter is chosen just before the cycle in which it is used.
Consequently, for each column position in which an item or a total must be added in counter A, the carriage is provided with a stopper 353 to act on the selector 331. This during, when a total must be taken from counter A, a zero cycle must occur between the choice of counter A and the cycle for taking the total. Therefore, the stop cleat 353 is placed on the. plate at a point corresponding to such a zero cycle.
<I> Order by truck of the choice of </I> counter <I> B. </I>
This mechanism is similar to the one described in the previous paragraph. It comprises an angled lever 366 (fig. 23) arranged to push forward the slide 367, this angled lever being actuated by a pin 368 which is actuated by the selector 330. This selector is lowered by one or more cleats 353 of stop placed on the control plate, as described for the choice of -counter A.
Ordered <I> by trolley of the choice of </I> counter <I> C. </I>
An elbow lever 369 functions to push a slide in a forward direction, this slide is not shown by itself, but is similar to the slide shown by reference numeral 276 in FIG. 23, the movement being transmitted from the selector 329 to the crank lever 369 by a pin <B> 371. </B> The selector 329 is lowered to or to the proper points of the working stroke of the carriage by one or more stop cleats 353. <I> Order by truck of the choice of </I> <I> counter D. </I>
This is done by means of an angled lever 372 acting on the slide 373 and actuated by a pin 374 which is located below the selector 328, the latter being lowered in time by means of one or more cleats. 353 stop: of the pa pier trolley.
<I> Order by trolley of the </I> final total <I> from </I> <I> of a secondary counter. </I>
The selected secondary counter is set to take a final total from it by the forward movement of the slide to tal 290 (fig. 25). The carriage is arranged to effect this total slide movement by means of an elbow lever 375 pivoted at 358 and actuated by a pin 376 which is lowered by the selector 325. For each column position in which a final total must be taken from a selected secondary meter, a stopper 3.53 is provided on the carriage to actuate selector 325.
<I> Order by truck of the subtotal to </I> <I> from a secondary counter. </I>
This mechanism is similar to that described last and comprises an angled lever 377, pivoted at 358 and actuated by the selector 326 by a pin 378. A stopper 353 disposed on the paper carriage in a position - corresponding to each column, in which a subtotal is to be printed from a selected secondary counter, lowers the selector 326 'at the desired time.
Since the total slide 290 is necessarily moved forward, when the partial total slide 291 is advanced, it is advantageous to assist the force from the subtotal selector 326 by also lowering the total selector 325. As shown in fig. 25, the two selectors 325 and 326 are lowered whenever a partial total is to be taken from a secondary meter. <I> Order by trolley </I> no addition <I> in </I> <I> a secondary counter. </I>
The non-addition in the selected secondary counter is achieved by pushing forward the non-addition slide 37.7 (fig. 25) by means of an angled lever 379 which receives its movement from the selector. <B> 327 </B> by means of a pin 380.
<I> Second credit balance drawdown. </I> To test the correctness & the machine, bn is in the habit, after entering the bits (or the credits) - to "take" (that is to say $ e place on the keyboard) again the old balance and then operate the machine to subtract the old balance from the new balance.
If the old balance has been indicated correctly in both cases (by being added the first time and subtracted the second time) the remainder will be the same as the total debits (or debits) transcribed, thus proving the 'accuracy of the withdrawal of the old balance. As the balance of the customer account will usually be in debit, it is customary to arrange the commands activated by. the cart, on the machine, so that in the column position where the second withdrawal of the old balance is recorded in the main meter, it will be subtracted, as it comes. to be explained.
However, if the old balance is an overdraft, it is subtracted when it is withdrawn the first time and therefore it is necessary to add the old balance when it is withdrawn the second time. to prove the accuracy of transcriptions; and as the machine is normally arranged to subtract the second charge, it is necessary to provide means by which, when the old balance is an overrun, the second charge is added. Such means will now be described.
381 is a key which may be referred to as the second credit balance withdrawal key (Fig. 11). The stem of this key is located above a handle 382 to which an arm 383 is attached. This arm is connected by a spring 384 to an arm of a lever 385, which is pivoted in <B> 386. </B> The other arm of lever 885 is located in front of slide 198 - under tension - (fig. 20).
It will be seen that when the key for the second withdrawal of the credit balance is lowered and locked in the lowered position by the. slide 109, lever 385 will prevent selector 321 from moving subtraction slide 198 forward, as it would otherwise if there was a stop 353 to operate under traction selector 321.
A spring 387 returns the shackle 382 to the normal position when the key 381 is released from its down position.
<I> Taking two consecutive subtotals </I> <I> credit. </I>
It is frequently desirable to print a balance from the main counter on one work piece and print that balance again on another work piece in the next cycle of operations. This does not present any difficulty when the balance is a debit amount, as the main meter gears tend to mesh with the addition racks, but as the balance can sometimes be a creditor amount, it is necessary to provide means. which automatically force the gears of the main meter to re-mesh with the subtraction racks, if the balance is in the nature of a credit.
As explained previously, at the end of a partial totalization operation, the main counter pinions move out of engagement with the racks, a moment after the latter have returned to their lowered position.
If the subtotal was a credit balance, the subtraction slide 198 (fig. 16) returns to its normal rear position under the action of its spring 202, as soon as the cam 169, acting on the roller 212, moves the slide back. 208. The spring 202 also tends to make the addition and subtraction link 50 oscillate on the addition side, that is to say in engagement with the pin 53.
If now the creator subtotal is to be printed again, it will be seen that it is necessary to perform a cycle of operations to set the main counter for this purpose. To avoid this necessity, means are provided to prevent the spring. 202 to remove the connecting rod 50 from its. taken with the subtraction pin 54. These means com take a latch 388 (fig. 16 and 21), pivoted in the frame of the machine at 389 and arranged to engage with a pin 390 of the subtraction slide 198.
A spring 391- normally maintains the latch in contact with the pin. A hammer 392 is pivoted on the front end of the latch 388, this hammer is normally held against a stop pin 393 on the latch, by means of a springs: 394. A pin 395 is on the arm 13 for come in gear with the dog 39 \ ?.
Assuming that a subtotal is to be taken at a given column position, a zero cycle is performed in the immediately preceding column position. If the main counter contains a credit balance, the subtraction slide 198 is moved forward by the slide 208, during this zero cycle, the subtraction slide 198 being locked in this forward position by the latch 338.
In the next subtotal cycle, pin 395 releases latch 388 from subtract slider 198, but this does not matter, since the subtract slider has already operated for that cycle.
When the oscillating shaft 15 has continued its rotational movement of a few degrees, in this cycle, the spring 209 can, thanks to the cam 169, advance the slide 208, thus placing the subtraction slide 198 again under. latch control 388, where it remains for the remainder of this cycle and long enough during the second subtotal cycle, to perform its function.
The connecting rod 50 is thereby maintained in engagement with the pin 54, as shown in FIG. 19.
The reference signs appearing in the claim and in the sub-claims are given only as an indication, to facilitate understanding, but in no way limit the scope to the example described, to which these reference signs relate. .
