mおよびnは、それぞれ独立して、0~2の整数を表し、好ましくは0又は1であり、より好ましくは0である。
好ましくは、2,2’−ビフェノール、3,3’−ビフェノール、4,4’−ビフェノール、2,2’−ジメチル−4,4’−ビフェノール及び2,2’,6,6’−テトラメチル−4,4’−ビフェノールが挙げられる。
より好ましくは、4,4’−ビフェノールが挙げられる。
前記ニッケル触媒には、水素化用の汎用触媒として市販されているものを使用することができる。具体的には、Graceのラネー(登録商標)触媒、ニッケルスポンジ触媒を挙げることができる。また、ニッケル触媒に、助触媒としてニッケル以外の微量の他金属成分、例えば、Cu、Cr、Mo、Mg、Alが添加されたものでもよい。
ニッケル触媒は、単独でもよいし、複数種を組み合わせてもよい。
ニッケル触媒の量は、化合物(1)1質量部に対して、通常、0.001質量部~20質量部の範囲であり、好ましくは、0.01質量部~2.0質量部であり、より好ましくは、0.1質量部~0.5質量部であり、さらに好ましくは0.1質量部~0.3質量部である。
第二級アルコール量は、化合物(1)1質量部に対して、通常、1質量部~100質量部であり、好ましくは、1質量部~50質量部であり、より好ましくは、2質量部~5質量部であり、さらに好ましくは2質量部~3質量部である。
前記有機溶媒量は、化合物(1)1質量部に対して、通常、0.01質量部~100質量部であり、好ましくは、0.1質量部~50質量部であり、より好ましくは、0.1質量部~5質量部である。
反応は、通常、不活性ガス雰囲気下で実施され、水素ガスの非存在下であると好ましい。不活性ガスとしては、窒素及びアルゴンが挙げられ、好ましくは窒素である。
反応時間は、通常、1時間~150時間である。
反応容器としては、特に限定されないが、攪拌時の温度が、前記第二級アルコールまたは有機溶媒の沸点よりも高い場合など、反応容器内が著しく加圧となる反応条件においてはオートクレーブ等の耐圧容器を使用することが好ましい。
さらに、再結晶等の通常の精製手段により、精製してもよい。
前記有機溶媒量は、化合物(1)1質量部に対して、通常、0.01質量部~100質量部であり、好ましくは、0.1質量部~50質量部であり、より好ましくは、0.1質量部~5質量部である。
反応容器としては、オートクレーブ等の耐圧容器が挙げられる。
さらに、再結晶等の通常の精製手段により、精製してもよい。
内容積100mLのステンレス製オートクレーブの容器内に、4,4’−ビフェノール5.00g(26.85mmol)、ラネーニッケル触媒0.65g(東京化成工業株式会社製、水スラリーとして秤量)および2−プロパノール15.00gを約25℃の室温で加えた。得られた混合物を含む容器内を水素ガスで十分に置換した後、140℃に昇温し、水素ガス圧力を7kg/cm2に調整した。水素ガスを随時追加し、系内の水素ガス圧力が7kg/cm2に保たれるように調節しながら、8時間保温攪拌した。その後、得られた混合物を室温まで冷却し、窒素ガスで置換した。次いで、窒素ガス置換された系内に、テトラヒドロフラン25.00gを加え、得られた混合物を攪拌した後、濾過により固形分を除去した。得られた濾液を液体クロマトグラフィー内部標準法(内部標準:安息香酸n−プロピル)により分析し、当該濾液中の化合物(2−1)の含有量を算出した。その結果、4,4’−ビフェノールを基準とする化合物(2−1)の収率は、98.4モル%であった。また、得られた濾液をガスクロマトグラフィーにより分析し、目的生成物である化合物(2−1)の生成率を算出したところ、原料である4,4’−ビフェノールに対して86モル%であり、また、分離除去が困難な副生成物であるビシクロヘキサンジオールの生成率を算出したところ、原料である4,4’−ビフェノールに対して7.7モル%であった。
内容積100mLのステンレス製オートクレーブの容器内に、4,4’−ビフェノール5.00g(26.85mmol)、ラネーニッケル触媒1.52g(東京化成工業株式会社製、水スラリーとして秤量)および2−プロパノール15.00gを約25℃の室温で加えた。得られた混合物を含む容器内を水素ガスで十分に置換した後、120℃に昇温し、水素ガス圧力を5kg/cm2に調整した。水素ガスを随時追加し、系内の水素ガス圧力が5kg/cm2に保たれるように調節しながら、8時間保温攪拌した。反応終了後、得られた混合物を室温まで冷却し、窒素ガスで置換した。次いで、窒素ガス置換された系内に、テトラヒドロフラン25.00gを加え、得られた混合物を攪拌した後、濾過により固形分を除去した。得られた濾液を実施例2と同様にして分析した。その結果、4,4’−ビフェノールを基準とする化合物(2−1)の収率は、98.2モル%であった。また、得られた濾液をガスクロマトグラフィーにより分析し、目的生成物である化合物(2−1)の生成率を算出したところ、原料である4,4’−ビフェノールに対して82モル%であり、また、分離除去が困難な副生成物であるビシクロヘキサンジオールの生成率を算出したところ、原料である4,4’−ビフェノールに対して4.1モル%であった。
