Abstract

 本発明の製造方法では、(メタ)アクリル酸アルキルエステル(アルキル基は炭素数1~20の鎖状基または炭素数5~20の環状基)である単量体Aと、ポリオキシアルキレン基、アミド基、ヒドロキシル基等の非イオン性親水基と炭素-炭素二重結合とを有する単量体Bとを含み、単量体Aを主たる単量体とする単量体群を乳化重合し、ガラス転移温度(Tg)が-50~20°Cの共重合体を含むエマルジョンを得る。このエマルジョンに液晶を分散させ、導電膜付き基体に塗布し、もう1枚の導電膜付き基体と組み合わせて液晶調光素子を得る。カルボキシル基および/またはアミノ基と炭素-炭素二重結合とを有する単量体Cを架橋剤と共に用いて共重合体に架橋構造を導入してもよい。本発明によれば、電圧印加時の透明性と電圧開放時の遮蔽性とが高いレベルで両立した液晶調光素子が提供される。
