Definitions
- the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of metal particle particulate sols having a metal particle content of> 1 g / l, comprising the steps of reacting a metal salt solution with a hydroxide ion-containing solution and the reaction of the solution obtained from the preceding step with a reducing agent. Furthermore, the present invention relates to metal particles produced by the process according to the invention and the use of such metal particles.
- Nanoparticles within the meaning of the present invention include nanoparticles and submicroparticles.
- Nanoparticles in the sense of the present invention are defined as particles that are smaller than 100 nm in at least one dimension.
- Microparticles are particles which are between 1 ⁇ m and 1000 ⁇ m in all three dimensions.
- Submicroparticles are defined as particles that are greater than 100 nm in all three dimensions and that are smaller than 1 ⁇ m in at least one dimension.
- a sol or colloid is a dispersion of nano- or sub-microparticles in a liquid.
- nanoscale and sub-microscale metal particles include the particle morphology, the average particle size, the particle size distribution, the colloid-chemical stability of the dispersions and the processing properties of the particles.
- Metal colloids can be characterized by their UV / Vis spectra for specific properties. Thus, they show a so-called plasmon peak, which results from a collective oscillation of conduction electrons in response to a vibrating external electromagnetic field.
- the shape or width of the plasmon peak can be characterized by the ratio E m + ioc / E m , where E m corresponds to the extinction maximum of the plasmon peak and E m + ioo the extinction of the metal sol in the UV / Vis spectrum at the extinction maximum plus 100 nm
- E 5 oo / E m ie to set the extinction at 500 nm and in the peak maximum.
- silver nanoparticles can have an extinction maximum between 400 and 420 nm. From the shape or width of the plasmon peak it is now possible to draw conclusions about the particle size and the particle size distribution of the sample. Furthermore, the UV / Vis spectrum also changes when the sample agglomerates: the plasmon peak decreases in intensity and widens.
- the prior art discloses various methods for producing metallic nanoparticles. A well-known principle is the direct chemical reduction of dissolved metal ions in the liquid phase. The aim of many variants of this method is the preparation of colloid-chemically stable dispersions of metallic nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution and defined surface properties. The different variants are characterized by the choice of reactants, the reaction conditions and the reaction.
- colloidally chemically stable means that the properties of the colloidal dispersion or of the colloids themselves do not change greatly during the usual storage times before use, for example, therefore, no substantial aggregation or flocculation of the colloid particles takes place.
- nanoscale metal particles Another way of producing nanoscale metal particles is the synthesis of nanoscale metal oxide particles, which are reduced in a subsequent step.
- the conductive composition comprises a particulate silver compound and a binder and optionally a reducing agent and a binder.
- Silver oxide, silver carbonate, silver acetate and the like are used as the particulate silver compound.
- Ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol diacetate and the like are used as the reducing agent.
- a fine powder of a thermosetting resin such as a polyvalent phenol compound, phenol resin, alkyd resin or polyester resin or a thermoplastic resin such as styrene resin or polyethylene terephthalate having an average particle diameter of 20 nm to 5 ⁇ m is used as a binder.
- the average particle diameter of the particulate silver compound is preferably 0.01 to 10 ⁇ m.
- EP 1 493 780 A1 does not disclose how concentrated dispersions of silver nanoparticles can be prepared. Rather, the particulate silver compound is reduced at temperatures of above 150 ° C in the binder to silver particles, which fuse together.
- the present invention has set itself the task of overcoming at least one of the disadvantages mentioned in the prior art. In particular, it has set itself the task of providing a process for the production of metal particle sols having a metal particle content of> 1 g / l.
- the object according to the invention is achieved by a process for the preparation of metal particle sols having a metal particle content of> 1 g / l, comprising the steps
- step b) reaction of the solution obtained from step a) with a reducing agent
- At least one of the solutions in step a) comprises a dispersing aid.
- step a) of the process of the present invention the metal cations present in the metal salt solution react with the hydroxide ion of the hydroxide ion-containing solution and thereby as metal oxides, metal hydroxides, mixed metal oxide hydroxides and / or their Hydrate precipitate out of the solution.
- This behavior can be described as a heterogeneous precipitation of nanoscale and submicroscopic particles.
- the solution containing the metal oxide / hydroxide particles is reacted with a reducing agent.
- a conversion takes place in the solid phase.
- Characteristic of the process according to the invention is that the heterogeneous precipitation of the nanoscale and submicroscale particles takes place in the presence of a dispersing aid, also referred to as protective colloid.
- the method according to the invention offers several advantages over the prior art.
- solid contents of> 1 g / l to ⁇ 15.0 g / l can be achieved.
- silver nano sols can represent, the UV / Vis spectra, a ratio E 5O oze n, of> 0.01 to ⁇ 0.8, of> 0.1 to ⁇ 0.35 and> 0.15 to ⁇ 0, 25 have.
- the metal nanosols prepared according to the invention are distinguished by a high colloid-chemical stability, which is maintained in a selective concentration.
- the process according to the invention makes it possible to adjust the particle size distribution of the metal particles in a targeted manner by controlling the heterogeneous precipitation step and the reduction step and thereby to prepare sols having a narrow particle size distribution.
- the metal particle sols or the metal particles produced in accordance with the invention are not agglomerated in the sols.
- non-agglomerated means that in the UV / Vis spectra of the metal particle sols the plasmon peak has a ratio of -wioo / Ei n of> 0.001 to ⁇ 0.8, preferably of> 0.01 to ⁇ 0.75 and more preferably from> 0.02 to ⁇ 0.7.
- the same statement can be made for the Esoo / E m ratio.
- Water is suitable as solvent for the process according to the invention.
- solvents are conceivable, for example, when the process is to be carried out at temperatures below 0 0 C or above 100 0 C or the product is to be incorporated into matrices in which the presence of water would be disturbing.
- polar protic solvents such as alcohols and acetone
- polar aprotic solvents such as N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF)
- nonpolar solvents such as CH 2 Cl 2 .
- Mixtures of the aforementioned solvents and groups are also suitable.
- the educt solutions which is understood to include the solution of the reducing agent in step b), or the solution obtained after step a) further
- Substances such as low molecular weight additives, salts, foreign ions, surfactants and complexing agents be added.
- the educt solutions can be degassed before the reaction, for example, to remove oxygen and CO 2 . It is also possible that the educt solutions are handled under protective gas and / or in the dark.
- the solution obtained after step a) can be added to set a desired pH of acids or bases. It is advantageous, for example, to keep the pH in the acidic range. As a result, the monodispersity of the particle distribution in the subsequent step b) can be improved.
- a molar ratio between the molar amount of hydroxide ions and the molar amount of metal cations of> 0.5: 1 to ⁇ 10: 1, preferably> 0.7: 1 to ⁇ 5: 1, more preferably> 0.9: 1 to ⁇ 2: 1.
- the temperature at which process step a) is carried out for example, in a range of> 0 0 C to ⁇ 100 0 C, preferably> 5 ° C to ⁇ 50 0 C, more preferably> 10 0 C to
- the temperature at which process step b) is carried out for example, in a range of> 0 0 C to ⁇ 100 0 C, preferably> 30 0 C to ⁇ 95 ° C, particularly preferably> 55 ° C to
- the colloid-chemical stability and the performance properties of the product dispersion can be further optimized by a washing step or by addition of additives.
- the metal particle nanosols and their oxidic precursor phases have a high colloid-chemical stability. This is manifested, inter alia, by the fact that the colloidal properties of the sols prepared by the process according to the invention are retained even in the event of subsequent concentration. It is even possible to remove the solvent and then to redisperse the particles without losing their colloidal properties.
- the dispersing aid has a molecular weight, in the case of polymers expressed as weight average M w , between> 100 g / mol and ⁇ 1 000 000 g / mol and preferably between> 1000 g / mol and ⁇ 100 000 g / mol.

- the dispersing aid is selected from the group comprising alkoxylates, alkylolamides, esters, amine oxides, alkylpolyglucosides, alkylphenols, arylalkylphenols, water-soluble homopolymers, random copolymers, block copolymers, graft polymers, polyethylene oxides, polyvinyl alcohols, copolymers of polyvinylidene alcohols and polyvinyl acetates, polyvinyl pyrrolidones, cellulose, starch, gelatin, gelatin derivatives, amino acid polymers, polylysine, polyaspartic acid, polyacrylates, polyethylene sulfonates, polystyrenesulfonates, polymethacrylates, condensation products of aromatic sulfonic acids with formaldehyde, naphthalenesulfonates, ligninsulfonates, copolymers of acrylic monomers, polyethyleneimines, polyviny
- such dispersing aids can influence the particle size and the particle size distribution of the metal nanosols. For some applications, it is important to have a narrow particle size distribution. For other applications, it is advantageous to have a broad or multimodal particle size distribution as the particles can take a denser packing.
- a further advantage of the dispersion aids mentioned is that they can impart specific properties to the particles on whose surfaces they adhere. In addition to the already mentioned positive and negative surface charges, which can contribute to the colloidal stability by the mutual repulsion, the hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of the surface and the biocompatibility are mentioned.
- the dispersing aid is present in at least one educt solution in a concentration of> 0.1 g / l to ⁇ 100 g / l, preferably ⁇ 1 g / l to ⁇ 60 g / l, particularly preferably> 5 g / l to ⁇ 40 g / l. If both solutions comprise the dispersing assistant in step a) of the process according to the invention, it is possible that the dispersing aids are different and are present in different concentrations.
- the selection of such a concentration range ensures that the particles are covered to the extent that they are covered with dispersing agent during the precipitation from the solution so that the desired properties, such as stability and redispersibility, are maintained.
- it avoids excessive wrapping of the particles with the dispersing aid. An unnecessary excess of dispersing agent could also undesirably react with the reducing agent.
- too much of a dispersing agent is detrimental to the colloidal stability of the particles and hinders further processing.
- it allows the selection of liquids with process-technically easy-to-handle viscosity.
- the metal salt solution comprises ions which are selected from the group comprising iron, ruthenium, osmium, cobalt,
- Rhodium, iridium, nickel, palladium, platinum, copper, silver, gold, zinc and / or cadmium are examples of these compounds.

- the metal ions in the metal salt solution are in a concentration of> 0.001 mol / l to ⁇ 2 mol / l, preferably> 0.01 mol / l to ⁇ 1 mol / l, particularly preferably> 0.1 Mol / l to ⁇ 0.5 mol / l before.
- This concentration range is advantageous since at lower concentrations the achieved solids content of the nanosol would be too low and expensive post-treatment steps would be necessary. At higher concentrations, precipitation of the oxide / hydroxide particles would be too fast, resulting in uneven particle morphology. Furthermore, the particles would continue to aggregate due to the high concentration.
- the solution containing hydroxide ions is obtainable from the reaction of bases selected from the group comprising LiOH, NaOH, KOH, Mg (OH) 2 , Ca (OH) 2 , aliphatic amines, aromatic amines, alkali metal amides and / or alkoxides.
- bases selected from the group comprising LiOH, NaOH, KOH, Mg (OH) 2 , Ca (OH) 2 , aliphatic amines, aromatic amines, alkali metal amides and / or alkoxides.

- the above-mentioned microreactors and dispersing or nozzle reactors can be used.
- nozzle reactors are MicroJetReactor (Synthetic Chemistry GmbH) and the jet disperser (Bayer Technology Services GmbH).
- continuous processes have the advantage that upscaling from the laboratory to the production scale is simplified by the "numbering up” principle instead of the "scaling up” principle.

- the invention further relates to metal particles which can be produced by a process according to the invention. With regard to their particle sizes d 50 , these metal particles may have, for example, values of> 0.01 ⁇ m to ⁇ 0.5 ⁇ m, preferably> 0.02 ⁇ m to ⁇ 0.4 ⁇ m, particularly preferably> 0.03 ⁇ m to ⁇ 0.3 ⁇ m exhibit.
