発明が解決しょうとする課題 [0012] ところで、前述したような化学強化工程においては、化学強化工程後に生じるガラ ス基板上の微小うねりを十分に抑制することができないことが判明した。また、このよう な微小うねりは、化学強化工程後のガラス基板の冷却時に発生していることが判明し た。
[0013] そして、近年、磁気ディスクにおける情報記録の高密度化に伴い、磁気ヘッドの低 フライングハイトイ匕が進められており、従来にもましてより平滑な表面を有するガラス 基板が求められており、このような微小うねりが問題となるに至っている。
[0014] そこで、本発明は、前述のような実情に鑑みてなされたものであり、その目的は、加 熱した化学強化塩融解液にガラス基板を接触させガラス基板の表層をィ匕学強化する 化学強化工程を有する磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法にお!ヽて、化学強化工 程後のガラス基板の冷却時に発生する微小うねりが抑制され、ヘッドクラッシュ及び サーマル.ァスペリティといった障害を防止しつつ磁気ヘッドの低フライングノヽィトイ匕 を図り高密度情報記録が可能であって、特に、携帯情報機器用の小型のハードディ スクドライブに用いて好適な磁気ディスクを構成することができる磁気ディスク用ガラ ス基板を製造できる磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法を提供することにある。

課題を解決するための手段
[0016] 本発明者は、前述のようなガラス基板上に発生する微小うねりは、化学強化工程の 後に、ガラス基板上に残留した強化塩が冷却されて結晶化する際に生じる塩の体積 変動及び凝固熱によって生じることを突き止めた。
[0017] そこで、本発明に係る磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法は、以下の構成の!/、ず れかーを有するものである。

[0040] 〔ラッピング工程〕
本発明に係る磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法においては、まず、図 1に示す ように、板状ガラス 1の主表面をラッピング (研肖 処理してガラス母材 2とし、このガラ ス母材 2を切断してガラス基板 3を切り出し、このガラス基板 3の主表面に対し、少なく ともポリッシング (研磨)処理を行う。
[0041] ラッピング処理に供する板状ガラス 1としては、様々な形状の板状ガラス 1を用いる ことができる。この板状ガラス 1の形状は、矩形状であっても、ディスク状(円盤状)で あってもよい。ディスク状の板状ガラス 1は、従来の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造 にお 、て用いられて 、るラッピング装置を用いてラッピング処理を行うことができ、信 頼性の高い加工を安価にて行うことができる。
[0042] この板状ガラス 1のサイズは、製造しょうとする磁気ディスク用ガラス基板より大きいサ ィズである必要がある。例えば、「1インチ型ハードディスクドライブ」、あるいは、それ 以下のサイズの小型ハードディスクドライブに搭載する磁気ディスクに用いる磁気デ イスク用ガラス基板を製造する場合にあっては、この磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の直 径は略々 20mm乃至 30mm程度であるので、ディスク状の板状ガラス 1の直径として は、 30mm以上、好ましくは、 48mm以上であることが好ましい。直径が 65mm以上 のディスク状の板状ガラス 1を用いれば、 1枚の板状ガラス 1から、複数の「1インチ型 ハードディスクドライブ」に搭載する磁気ディスクに用いる磁気ディスク用ガラス基板を 採取することができ、大量生産に好適である。
[0043] この板状ガラス 1は、例えば、溶融ガラスを材料として、プレス法やフロート法、また は、フュージョン法など、公知の製造方法を用いて製造することができる。これらのう ち、プレス法を用いれば、板状ガラス 1を廉価に製造することができる。
[0044] また、板状ガラス 1の材料としては、化学強化されるガラスであれば、特に制限は設 けないが、アルミノシリケートガラスを好ましく挙げることができる。特に、リチウムを含 有するアルミノシリケートガラスが好ましい。このようなアルミノシリケートガラスは、ィォ ン交換型化学強化処理、特に、低温イオン交換型化学強化処理により、好ましい圧 縮応力を有する圧縮応力層及び引張応力を有する引張応力層を精密に得ることが できるので、磁気ディスク用化学強化ガラス基板 3の材料として好ま ヽ。
[0045] このようなアルミノシリケートガラスの組成比としては、 Si02を、 58乃至 75重量%、 A1203を、 5乃至 23重量%、 Li20を、 3乃至 10重量%、 Na20を、 4乃至 13重量% 、主成分として含有することが好ましい。
[0046] さらに、アルミノシリケートガラスの組成比としては、 Si02を、 62乃至 75重量0 /0、 A1 203を、 5乃至 15重量0 /0、 Li20を、 4乃至 10重量0 /0、 Na20を、 4乃至 12重量0 /0、 Zr02を、 5. 5乃至 15重量%、主成分として含有するとともに、 Na20と Zr02との重 量比(Na20ZZr02)が 0. 5乃至 2. 0、 A1203と Zr02との重量比(A1203ZZrO 2)が 0. 4乃至 2. 5であることが好ましい。
[0047] ラッピング処理 (第 1ラッピング工程)は、板状ガラス 1の主表面の形状精度 (例えば 、平坦度)や寸法精度 (例えば、板厚の精度)を向上させることを目的とする加工であ る。このラッピング処理は、板状ガラス 1の主表面に、砥石、あるいは、定盤を押圧さ せ、これら板状ガラス 1及び砥石または定盤を相対的に移動させることにより、板状ガ ラス 1の主表面を研削することにより行われる。このようなラッピング処理は、遊星歯車 機構を利用した両面ラッピング装置を用いて行うことができる。
[0048] ラッピング処理にぉ ヽて用いる砥石としては、ダイヤモンド砥石を用いることができ る。また、遊離砥粒としては、アルミナ砥粒ゃジルコ -ァ砥粒、または、炭化珪素砥粒 などの硬質砲粒を用いるとよ 、。
[0049] このラッピング処理により、板状ガラス 1の形状精度が向上し、主表面の形状が平坦 ィ匕されるとともに板厚が所定の値となるまで削減されたガラス母材 2が形成される。ガ ラス母材 2の主表面がラッピング処理により平坦となされ、また、板厚が削減されてい ることにより、このガラス母材 2を切断して、このガラス母材 2からガラス基板 3を切り出 すことができる。すなわち、ガラス母材 2からガラス基板 3を切り出すときに、欠け、ひ び、割れと 、つた欠陥が発生することを防止することができる。

ガラス基板 3の端面の鏡面研磨 (端面ポリツシング工程)をしておくことが好ま 、。 ガラス基板 3の端面は切断形状となって 、るので、この端面を鏡面にポリツシングして おくことにより、端面からのパーティクルの発生を抑制することができ、この磁気デイス ク用ガラス基板を用いて製造された磁気ディスクにお 、て、 、わゆるサーマルアスぺ リティ障害を良好に防止することができる力もである。また、端面が鏡面であれば、微 小クラックによる遅れ破壊を防止できる。端面の鏡面状態としては、算術平均粗さ (R a)で lOOnm以下の鏡面が好まし!/、。

後述するガラス基板 3のポリツシング工程の前に、ラッピング処理 (第 2ラッピングェ 程)をしておくことが好ましい。このときのラッピング処理は、前述した板状ガラス 1に対 するラッピング処理と同様の手段により行うことができる。ガラス基板 3をラッピング処 理して力 ポリッシング処理を行うことにより、より短時間で、鏡面化された主表面を得 ることがでさる。

ガラス母材 2から切り出されたガラス基板 3に対してポリツシング処理を施し、ガラス 基板 3の主表面を鏡面化する。

[0054] ガラス基板 3の主表面がこのような鏡面となっていれば、このガラス基板 3を用いて 製造される磁気ディスクにおいて、磁気ヘッドの浮上量力 例えば、 lOnmである場 合であっても、 V、わゆるクラッシュ障害ゃサーマルアスペリティ障害の発生を防止する ことができる。また、ガラス基板 3の主表面がこのような鏡面となっていれば、後述する 化学強化工程において、ガラス基板 3の微細領域において均一に化学強化処理を 施すことができ、また、微小クラックによる遅れ破壊を防ぐことができる。
[0055] このポリッシング処理は、例えば、ガラス基板 3の主表面に、研磨布(例えば、研磨 ノ^ド)が貼り付けられた定盤を押圧させ、ガラス基板 3の主表面に研磨液を供給しな がら、これらガラス基板 3及び定盤を相対的に移動させ、ガラス基板 3の主表面を研 磨することにより行われる。このとき、研磨液には、研磨砲粒を含有させておくとよい。 研磨砲粒としては、コロイダルシリカ研磨砲粒を用いることができる。研磨砲粒として は、平均砲粒が lOnm乃至 200nmの砲粒を用いるとよ!/、。
[0056] また、別のポリッシング処理としては、例えば、ガラス基板 3の主表面にテープ状の 研磨布 (例えば、研磨テープ)を押し付け、ガラス基板 3の主表面に研磨液を供給し ながら、これらガラス基板 3及び研磨布を相対的に移動させ、ガラス基板 3の主表面 を研磨するテープ研磨方法を用いてもよい。このとき、研磨液には、研磨砲粒を含有 させておくとよい。研磨砥粒としては、ダイヤモンド研磨砥粒を用いることができる。研 磨砲粒としては、平均粒径が lOnm乃至 200nmの砲粒を用いるとよ!/、。
[0057] 研磨パッド、あるいは、研磨テープの研磨面は、ポリウレタン、ポリエステルなどの榭 脂材料とすることが好ましい。研磨パッドであれば、研磨面を発泡榭脂 (例えば、発泡 ポリウレタン)、研磨テープであれば、研磨面を榭脂繊維 (例えば、ポリエステル榭脂 繊維)とすることが好適である。

[0059] ガラス基板 3のポリツシング工程の前及び Z又は後の化学強化工程において、化 学強化処理を施す。化学強化処理を行うことにより、磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の表 層に高い圧縮応力を生じさせることができ、耐衝撃性を向上させることができる。特に 、ガラス基板 3の材料としてアルミノシリケートガラスを用いている場合には、好適に化 学強化処理を行うことができる。 [0060] この化学強化工程においては、ガラス基板 3に含まれるイオンのイオン半径よりもィ オン半径が大きいイオンを含有する化学強化塩融解液とガラス基板 3とを接触させて
、イオン交換をさせる。この化学強化工程は、図 2に示すように、化学強化処理槽 4を 用いて行われ、ガラス基板は、このガラス基板に含まれるイオンのイオン半径よりもィ オン半径が大き ヽイオンを含有する化学強化塩融解液中に浸漬される。
[0061] この化学強化工程は、化学強化処理方法として公知のものと同等であり、化学強化 塩融解液としては、加熱したィ匕学強化塩融解液を用いることができる。イオン交換法 としては、低温型イオン交換法、高温型イオン交換法、表面結晶化法、ガラス表面の 脱アルカリ法などが知られて 、るが、ガラスの徐冷点を超えな 、温度領域でイオン交 換を行う低温型イオン交換法を用いることが好まし 、。
[0062] なお、ここで 、う低温型イオン交換法は、ガラスの徐冷点以下の温度領域にお!、て 、ガラス中のアルカリ金属イオンをこのアルカリ金属イオンよりもイオン半径の大きいァ ルカリ金属イオンと置換し、イオン交換部の容積増加によってガラス表層に圧縮応力 を発生させ、ガラス表層を強化する方法のことをさす。
[0063] なお、化学強化処理を行なうときの化学強化塩融解液の加熱温度は、イオン交換 が良好に行われるという観点等から、 280° C乃至 660° C、特に、 300° C乃至 40 0° Cであることが好ましい。ガラス基板 3をィ匕学強化塩融解液に接触させる時間は、 数時間乃至数十時間とすることが好ましい。なお、ガラス基板 3をィ匕学強化塩融解液 に接触させる前に、予備加熱として、ガラス基板 3を 100° C乃至 300° Cに加熱し ておくことが好ましい。
[0064] 化学強化工程を行うための化学強化処理槽 4の材料としては、耐食性に優れるとと もに、低発塵性の材料であれば、特に限定されない。化学強化塩や化学強化塩融 解液は酸化性があり、かつ、処理温度が高温なので、耐食性に優れた材料を選定す ることにより、損傷や発塵を抑制し、もって、サーマルアスペリティ障害や、ヘッドクラッ シュを抑制する必要がある。この観点からは、化学強化処理槽 4の材料としては、石 英材が特に好ましいが、ステンレス材ゃ、特に耐食性に優れるマルテンサイト系、ま たは、オーステナイト系ステンレス材も用いることができる。なお、石英材は、耐食性 に優れるが、高価なので、採算性を考慮して、適宜選択することができる。 [0065] 化学強化塩融解液としては、アルカリ金属元素を含有する硝酸塩、例えば、硝酸力 リウム、硝酸ナトリウム、硝酸リチウムなどを含有する硝酸塩を用いることが好適である 。なお、硝酸塩に含有されるリチウム元素は、 0ppm〜2000ppmとすることが好適で ある。このような化学強化塩は、ガラス、特に、リチウム元素を含むアルミノシリケートガ ラスをィ匕学強化処理したときに、磁気ディスク用ガラス基板としての所定の剛性及び 耐衝撃性を実現することができるからである。化学強化塩融解液中に含有されるリチ ゥムイオンが多すぎると、イオン交換が阻害されてしまう結果、本発明で得ようとする 引張応力や圧縮応力を得ることが困難になる場合がある。
[0066] 〔冷却工程、または、ガラス基板保持工程〕
そして、本発明においては、化学強化工程を経たガラス基板に対して、図 2に示す ように、ガラス基板 3をガラス基板保持槽 5に収容された処理液に浸漬しこのガラス基 板 3を保持するガラス基板保持工程を実行する。このガラス基板保持工程は、ガラス 基板 3をガラス基板保持槽 5に収容された融解液に浸漬し、この融解液をガラス基板 3の表面にコートしてから、ガラス基板 3をガラス基板を冷却する冷却工程ともなって いる。

まず、アモルファスのアルミノシリケートガラスカゝらなるディスク状のガラス母材を用意 した。このアルミノシリケートガラスは、リチウムを含有している。このアルミノシリケート ガラスの組成は、 Si02を、 63. 6重量0 /0、 A1203を、 14. 2重量0 /0、 Na20を、 10. 4重量0 /0、 Li20を、 5. 4重量0 /0、 Zr02を、 6. 0重量0 /0、 Sb203を、 0. 4重量0 /0含 むものである。

[0140] このようにして得られた磁気ディスクを用い、浮上量が 10nmのグライドヘッドにより グライド検査を行ったところ、衝突する異物等は検出されず、安定した浮上状態を維 持することができた。また、この磁気ディスクを用いて、 700kFCIで記録再生試験を 行ったところ、十分な信号強度比 (SZN比)を得ることができた。また、信号のエラー は確認されなかった。
[0141] また、実施例によって得られたガラス基板を用いて、磁気ヘッドの浮上量を 6nmに 設定し、ロード Zアンロード試験を行った結果、 100万回の動作を行っても、ヘッドク ラッシュは起きな力つた。

[0144] すなわち、例えば、直径が 30mm以下の小径の磁気ディスクは、いわゆるカーナビ ゲーシヨンシステムなどの車載用機器や、 ヽゎゆる PDAや携帯電話端末装置などの 携帯用機器における記憶装置において用いられ、固定されて使用される機器におけ る通常の磁気ディスクに比較して、高 、耐久性ゃ耐衝撃性が要求されるからである。
[0145] また、上記実施例 1および実施例 2を行って製造した磁気ディスク用ガラス基板を 用いて、垂直磁気記録方式の磁気ディスクを製造し、ロード Zアンロード試験および グライド検査を行った結果、良好な結果が得られた。

前述の実施例における磁気ディスク用ガラス基板と同様に、化学強化処理を行った 後、比較例として、ガラス基板をィ匕学強化処理液から引き上げて、放置した状態で室 温まで下げることにより、磁気ディスク用ガラス基板を得た。この比較例における磁気 ディスク用ガラス基板の主表面においては、「Candela社製 OSA6100」を用いた確 認により、微少うねりが観察された。
[0147] そして、このガラス基板を用いて磁気ディスクを製造し、実施例と同様のグライド検 查を行ったところ、ヘッドクラッシュが発生した。

冷却工程においては、ガラス基板の表面に付着したィ匕学強化塩融解液中の化学 強化塩を固化させることなぐ所定の温度までガラス基板の温度を低下させる ことを特徴とする磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。

[0161] また、本発明に力かる磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法は、加熱した化学強化 融解液にガラス基板を接触させることで当該ガラス基板をィ匕学強化する化学強化工 程を含む磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法であって、前記化学強化融解液の固 化温度よりも低い処理液に、前記化学強化処理されたガラス基板を接触させることに より、化学強化処理されたガラス基板の表面に付着した化学強化融解液を固化させ ることなくガラス基板表面上カゝら拡散させる接触工程を含む構成であってもよい。
[0162] また、本発明に係る磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法にぉ 、ては、冷却工程に おいて使用される処理液を、化学強化塩に含まれる金属塩の少なくとも一部を含ん でいるものとすることにより、ガラス基板の表面に付着したィ匕学強化処理を行ったィ匕 学強化塩融解液を、冷却工程において使用される処理液と分離することなく(液体状 態で)混合することができる。これにより、ガラス基板表面に付着している化学強化塩 融解液は、凝固点降下により、その結晶化温度を低くすることができるので、冷却ェ 程において強化塩融解液がガラス基板表面で結晶化することをより一層防止するこ とがでさる。
[0163] また、前記冷却工程において使用される前記融解液は、前記化学強化塩に含まれ る金属塩の少なくとも一部を含んで 、てもよ!/、。
産業上の利用可能性
[0164] 本発明は、磁気ディスク装置であるハードディスクドライブ (HDD)等に用いられる 磁気ディスクを構成する磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法及びこの磁気ディスク 用ガラス基板を用いる磁気ディスクの製造方法に適用される。

請求の範囲
[1] 加熱したィ匕学強化塩融解液にガラス基板を接触させ、所望の温度にぉ 、てガラス 基板の表層をィ匕学強化する化学強化工程と、この化学強化工程を経たガラス基板を 冷却する冷却工程とを含む磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法であって、 前記冷却工程にお!ヽては、前記ガラス基板の表面に付着した前記化学強化塩融 解液中の化学強化塩を固化させることなぐ所定の温度まで前記ガラス基板の温度 を低下させる
ことを特徴とする磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[2] 加熱したィ匕学強化塩融解液にガラス基板を接触させ、所望の温度にぉ 、てガラス 基板の表層をィ匕学強化する化学強化工程と、この化学強化工程を経たガラス基板を 冷却する冷却工程とを含む磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法であって、 前記冷却工程にお!、ては、前記化学強化塩よりも固化温度の低!、物質が融解され た処理液に前記ガラス基板を接触させる冷却処理を行い、
前記処理液の温度は、前記化学強化工程における化学強化塩融解液の温度より も低く調整されている
ことを特徴とする磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[3] 前記冷却処理は、第 1の処理液に前記ガラス基板を接触させる第 1の冷却処理と、 この第 1の冷却処理の後に少なくとも一の第 2以降の処理液に前記ガラス基板を順 次接触させる第 2以降の冷却処理とからなり、
前記第 1の冷却処理に用いる第 1の処理液は、前記化学強化工程における化学強 化塩融解液の温度よりも低ぐかつ、前記化学強化塩の固化温度よりも高い温度に 調整されており、
前記第 2以降の冷却処理に用いる第 2以降の処理液は、この冷却処理の一つ前に 行われる冷却処理に用いる前段処理液の温度よりも低ぐかつ、この前段処理液の 固化温度よりも高い温度に調整されている
ことを特徴とする請求項 2記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[4] 化学強化処理槽に収容され加熱された化学強化塩融解液にガラス基板を浸漬し、 所望の温度においてガラス基板の表層をィ匕学強化する化学強化工程と、この化学強 化工程を経たガラス基板をガラス基板保持槽に収容された処理液に浸漬し、このガ ラス基板を保持するガラス基板保持工程とを含む磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造 方法であって、
前記ガラス基板保持槽に収容された処理液は、前記化学強化塩よりも固化温度の 低 、物質が融解され、前記化学強化工程における化学強化塩融解液の温度よりも 低く調整されている
ことを特徴とする磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[5] 前記ガラス基板保持工程は、第 1のガラス基板保持槽に収容された第 1の処理液 に前記ガラス基板を浸漬させる第 1の保持処理と、この第 1の保持処理の後に少なく とも一の第 2以降のガラス基板保持槽に収容された第 2以降の処理液に前記ガラス 基板を順次浸漬させる第 2以降の保持処理とからなり、
前記第 1の保持処理に用いる第 1の処理液は、前記化学強化工程における化学強 化塩融解液の温度よりも低ぐかつ、前記化学強化塩の固化温度よりも高い温度に 調整されており、
前記第 2以降の保持処理に用いる第 2以降の処理液は、この保持処理の一つ前に 行われる保持処理に用いる前段処理液の温度よりも低ぐかつ、この前段処理液の 固化温度よりも高い温度に調整されている
ことを特徴とする請求項 4記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[6] 前記処理液は、硝酸塩を主たる物質とする融解液である
ことを特徴とする請求項 2乃至請求項 5のいずれか一に記載の磁気ディスク用ガラ ス基板の製造方法。
[7] 前記処理液は、アルカリ金属硝酸塩及びアルカリ土類金属硝酸塩から選択される 複数種類の硝酸塩を所定の割合で含むことにより、所望の固化温度に調整されてい る
ことを特徴とする請求項 6記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[8] 前記化学強化工程を経たガラス基板の温度を段階的に低下させる
ことを特徴とする請求項 1乃至請求項 7のいずれか一に記載の磁気ディスク用ガラ ス基板の製造方法。
[9] 加熱したィ匕学強化塩融解液にガラス基板を接触させ、所望の温度にぉ 、てガラス 基板の表層をィ匕学強化する化学強化工程と、この化学強化工程を経たガラス基板を 冷却する冷却工程とを含む磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法であって、 前記冷却工程においては、前記ガラス基板の温度が低下する前に、このガラス基 板の表面に、固化したときにガラス状に固化する物質が融解された融解液をコートし ておく
ことを特徴とする磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[10] 前記冷却工程においては、前記ガラス基板の表面に前記化学強化塩を結晶させる ことなく、前記ガラス基板の温度を所定の温度まで低下させる
ことを特徴とする請求項 9記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[11] 前記冷却工程において前記ガラス基板の表面にコートする融解液の温度は、前記 化学強化塩の固化温度よりも高!、温度に調整されて 、る
ことを特徴とする請求項 9、または、請求項 10記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の 製造方法。
[12] 前記冷却工程において前記ガラス基板の表面にコートする融解液は、固化したとき にガラス状に固化するように調整された硝酸塩を加熱して融解させた硝酸塩融解液 である
ことを特徴とする請求項 9乃至請求項 11のいずれか一に記載の磁気ディスク用ガ ラス基板の製造方法。
[13] 前記硝酸塩は、アルカリ金属硝酸塩及びアルカリ土類金属硝酸塩から選択される 複数種類の硝酸塩を所定の割合で含む
ことを特徴とする請求項 12記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方法。
[14] 請求項 1乃至請求項 13のいずれか一に記載の磁気ディスク用ガラス基板の製造方 法により製造された磁気ディスク用ガラス基板上に、少なくとも磁性層を成膜する ことを特徴とする磁気ディスクの製造方法。
