光結合構造並びに光伝送機能内蔵基板およびその製造方法
技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、光導波路とこれに垂直な方向に配置される光伝送体とを含む光結合構 造、並びにこの光結合構造を具備する光伝送機能内蔵基板およびその製造方法に 関する。
背景技術
[0002] 情報処理における処理量を増加させ処理スピードを向上させるために、半導体デ バイスの動作速度および信号の入出力端子数は、将来に渡って増加の傾向にある。 同時にその半導体デバイスを搭載する回路基板の信号配線数も著しく増大しており
、配線密度も高くなる傾向にある。それに従って、実装基板に形成された電気配線に おける信号の減衰および隣接する配線間のクロストークが顕著に増加し、深刻な問 題となっている。とりわけマイクロプロセッサに代表される大規模な半導体集積回路に おいては、 GHzレベルの信号を低消費電力で安定して入出力させることが大きな課 題である。
[0003] その課題を解決するために、半導体デバイスに入出力される電気信号を光信号に 変換し、その光信号を搬送する信号光を、実装基板に形成した光導波路等の光配 線によって伝送させる光伝送技術が検討されて 、る。
[0004] その光信号と電気信号との変換を行なう光電変換部には、送信出力側には主に化 合物半導体で構成される半導体レーザ (LD)や発光ダイオード (LED)等が用いられ 、受信入力側にはシリコン (Si)やィ匕合物半導体によるフォトダイオード (PD)といった 光半導体デバイスが用いられる。
[0005] ところで、半導体レーザには各種のタイプがある力 近年ではその結晶成長面で良 好な結晶が得られることから、素子基板の主面に対して垂直方向に光を出射させる 面発光レーザ (VCSEL)が、高性能かつ低コストな送信用光源として広く用いられつ つある。
[0006] 一方、フォトダイオードも、受光部がその結晶面上にある面受光型のものが一般的 に用いられている。
[0007] また、信号光を伝搬する光配線としては、コア部となる高屈折率の領域を低屈折率 な材料で覆ってクラッド部とした光導波路が、光学ガラス,単結晶あるいは高分子光 学材料を用いて作製されて 、る。
[0008] これら光半導体デバイスと光導波路との光結合構造においては、信号光の入出力 方向と実装基板上に形成された光導波路とがおおよそ交差する位置関係にあるため 、高 ヽ結合光量を得るために様々な提案がなされて ヽる。
[0009] 図 8は従来の光結合構造の代表例を示す断面図であり、特許文献 1に開示された 光電気配線基板の例である。図 8に示す例によれば、基板 100上に光配線層 103と電 気配線 105とが形成されている。送信側においては、レーザダイオード 101から出射し た信号光は、図中に破線で示すように、光配線層 103を構成する上部クラッド部 103b へ垂直に入射し、コアパターン 103aを通過して下部クラッド部 103cへ入射する。そし て、下部クラッド部 103c内で光配線層 103内に配置されたミラー部材 104で伝搬方向 を光配線層 103の配線方向に変換され、光配線層 103のコア部 103aに入射する構成 となっている。
[0010] 一方、受信側においても同様に、光配線層 103のコア部 103aを伝搬してきた信号光 がー且下部クラッド部 103cに至った後にミラー部材 104で光配線層 103に対して上方 へ垂直に方向を変換されて、同様にコア部 103aおよび上部クラッド部 103bを通過し た後にフォトダイオード 102へ入射する構成となって 、る。
[0011] また、図示しないが特許文献 2には、下部基板と上部基板の間に光導波路が形成 され、上部基板上にはレーザダイオードとフォトダイオードの面型光半導体デバイス が設けられている。そして、各デバイスの活性領域が基板面に対向し、各デバイスと 光導波路との間に設けられた貫通孔内に透明榭脂が配置されることにより、各デバイ スと光導波路とが光学的に結合されている。なお、各デバイスの光軸と光導波路の光 軸とは直交するため、 45° の光路変換面を有するミラー部材が光導波路の両端部 に形成される。

発明が解決しょうとする課題
[0012] し力しながら、図 8に示した光結合構造では、レーザダイオード 101およびフォトダイ オード 102の面型光半導体デバイスと、光配線層 103である光導波路との光結合の効 率を高くできないという問題点があった。これは、レーザダイオード 101から出射する 信号光が半値全角(または拡がり角)で数十度程度に広がることに起因する。この結 果、光配線層 103を通過して直下のミラー部材 104に至った時点では、信号光のスポ ットサイズが出射点の数倍以上に拡大している。
[0013] また、ミラー部材 104で光路が変換された後も、その反射面を覆って形成されている 下部クラッド部 103cを伝搬する間に信号光は放射状に広がる。そのため、光配線層 1 03のコア部 103aに至った時点では信号光のスポットサイズは、出射点の数倍から数 十倍に拡大し、断面サイズを数十/ z m角として形成されるコア部 103aよりもはるかに 大きなサイズとなる。その結果、信号光はコア部 103aに効率良く入射せず、光配線層 103内の信号光の伝送レベルも自ずと低下してしま ヽ、信号対雑音比(SZN比)や 信号変調のダイナミックレンジが高く取れな 、と 、う問題点を生じた。
[0014] そのような問題点を回避するために信号光の伝送レベルを上げようとすると、レーザ ダイオード 101への注入電流を上げて光出力を上げることが必要になり、そのために レーザダイオード 101での消費電力は増すこととなる。そしてその場合には、信号伝 送におけるエネルギー効率が低くならざるを得なくなるという問題点があった。
[0015] また同時に、レーザダイオード 101への注入電流を上げるとレーザダイオード 101に おける発熱が増加するため、複雑な放熱構造を追加しなければならなくなったり、信 頼性を低下させてしまったりすることとなる。さらには、基板 100からの放熱がこの光電 気配線基板を用いたシステムの動作に悪影響を及ぼしてしまうという問題点もあった
[0016] なお、特許文献 2の光結合構造では、光半導体デバイスと光導波路との間の貫通 孔内に透明樹脂が充填されているが、この透明榭脂は一様な屈折率であるため、信 号光を閉じ込めて全反射させつつ伝搬させる作用が十分ではなぐ損失が生じ易い [0017] また、特許文献 2の光結合構造では、光導波路の端部をダイサ一式切断機で切断 することによって 45° の光路変換面を形成している力 ダイサ一式切断機の刃の加 ェ方向は一定であるため、光導波路に対して発光デバイスと受光デバイスとが常に 同じ側に位置することになる。例えば、光導波路が基板内部において基板面に平行 に配置されている場合、発光デバイスと受光デバイスは双方とも基板の同じ面上に配 置される。つまり、発光デバイスを一方の面上、受光デバイスと他方の面上に配置す ることはできなかった。従って、従来の電気配線基板で実施されているように、基板の 表面と裏面の間、並びに基板内部に含まれる複数の層間において自在に光配線層 を配置する設計の自由度が制限されていた。
[0018] 本発明は上記のような従来の技術における問題点を考慮してなされたものであり、 その目的は、面型光半導体デバイスと光導波路との光結合において、入出力信号光 を効率よく伝搬および光路変換させて、面型光半導体デバイスと光導波路との光結 合の結合効率を高めることができる光結合構造を提供することにある。
[0019] また本発明の他の目的は、本発明の光結合構造を用いた、高性能で高い効率を 有するとともに低消費電力となる光伝送機能内蔵基板を実現することにある。
[0020] さらに本発明の他の目的は、本発明の光結合構造を、基板の両面間並びに基板 内部に自在に配置できる光伝送機能内蔵基板およびその製造方法を実現すること である。
課題を解決するための手段
[0021] 上記の目的を達成するべぐ本発明は以下の構成を提供する。
( 1)本発明の光結合構造は、光導波路と、径方向において中心部力 周辺部に向 力つて屈折率が低くなる円筒形状の屈折率分布体と、前記光導波路と前記屈折率 分布体の間で光路を変換させるベく前記光導波路および前記屈折率分布体の双方 に対して光学的に結合した光路変換面とを有する。
(2)上記光結合構造において、前記屈折率分布体は、径方向において中心部から 周辺部に向力つて階段状に低くなるように形成された屈折率分布を具備する。
(3)上記光結合構造において、前記屈折率分布体は、径方向において中心部から 周辺部に向力つて同心円状に漸次低くなるように形成された屈折率分布を具備する (4)上記光結合構造にお!、て、前記屈折率分布体は感光性高分子材料で形成され 、紫外光の照射によって前記屈折率分布を形成されている。
(5)上記光結合構造にお!ヽて、前記光導波路は感光性高分子材料によって形成さ れ、紫外光の照射によってコア部と前記コア部の周囲のクラッド部とが形成されてい る。
(6)上記光結合構造において、前記光路変換面が前記屈折率分布体の光軸に対し て傾斜した光反射面を具備し、前記光反射面は前記光導波路のコア部とクラッド部と の境界面における屈曲部に形成されて 、る。
(7)上記光結合構造において、前記光路変換面は、前記屈折率分布体の光軸に対 して 45度傾斜した光反射面を具備する。
(8)上記光結合構造において、前記光路変換面と前記光導波路の端部が間隔を空 けて対向している。
(9)上記光結合構造にお!ヽて、前記屈折率分布体および前記光路変換面を介して 前記光導波路に光学的に結合しかつ活性領域を前記屈折率分布体に対向させた 光半導体デバイスをさらに有する。
(10)上記光結合構造において、前記光半導体デバイスがそれぞれ面発光型レーザ ダイオードまたは面受光型フォトダイオードである。
(11)本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板は、上記光結合構造と、基板とを有し、前記光 導波路および前記光路変換面が前記基板上に形成され、前記屈折率分布体が前 記基板を貫通して形成されて!、る。
(12)さらに本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板は、上記光結合構造と、第 1の基板と、前 記第 1の基板と平行に配置された第 2の基板とを有し、前記光導波路および前記光 路変換面が前記第 1と第 2の基板の間に形成され、前記屈折率分布体が前記第 1ま たは第 2の基板を貫通して形成されて 、る。
(13)さらに本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板は、上記光結合構造と、基板とを有し、前 記光導波路および前記光路変換面が前記基板の一方の面上に形成され、前記光 半導体デバイスが前記基板の他方の面上に配置され、前記屈折率分布体が前記基 板を貫通して形成されて!ヽる。
(14)さらに本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板は、上記光結合構造と、第 1の基板と、前 記第 1の基板と平行に配置された第 2の基板とを有し、前記光導波路および前記光 路変換面が前記第 1と第 2の基板の間に形成され、前記光半導体デバイスが前記第 1または第 2の基板における前記光導波路および前記光路変換面を形成した面と反 対側の面上に配置され、前記屈折率分布体が前記第 1または第 2の基板を貫通して 形成されている。

(16)本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法は、基板内部に形成された光導波 路と、円筒形状の屈折率分布体と、前記光導波路と前記屈折率分布体の間で光路 を変換させるベく前記光導波路および前記屈折率分布体の双方に対して光学的に 結合した光路変換面とを有し、前記光路変換面が前記屈折率分布体の光軸に対し て傾斜した光反射面を具備し、前記光反射面は前記光導波路のコア部とクラッド部 の境界面を屈曲させて形成されている光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法において、 前記光路変換面を形成する工程が、
コア部を形成した後、前記屈折率分布体の光軸と交わる位置において前記コア部 を除去することにより前記コア部の表面に傾斜面を形成する工程と、 前記傾斜面を光反射膜で覆うことにより前記光反射面を形成する工程と、 前記光反射膜上を含む前記コア部上にクラッド部を形成する工程とを含む。
(17)本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法は、基板内部に形成された光導波 路と、円筒形状の屈折率分布体と、前記光導波路と前記屈折率分布体の間で光路 を変換させるベく前記光導波路および前記屈折率分布体の双方に対して光学的に 結合した光路変換面とを有し、前記光路変換面が前記屈折率分布体の光軸に対し て傾斜した光反射面を具備し、前記光反射面は前記光導波路のコア部とクラッド部 の境界面を屈曲させて形成されている光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法において、 前記光路変換面を形成する工程が、
クラッド部を形成するに先立って、前記屈折率分布体の光軸と交わる位置において 突起を形成する工程と、
前記突起上に前記突起の外郭形状に沿ってクラッド部を形成することにより前記ク ラッド部の表面に傾斜面を形成する工程と、
前記傾斜面を光反射膜で覆うことにより前記光反射面を形成する工程と、 前記光反射膜上を含む前記クラッド部上にコア部を形成する工程とを含む。
発明の効果
[0022] 本発明の光結合構造によれば、径方向において中心部から周辺部に向かって屈 折率が低くなる円筒形状の屈折率分布体が、光を中心部に閉じ込めつつ伝搬させる 光閉じ込め作用をもつ。従って、光導波路と、屈折率分布体と、これらの間で光路を 変換させるベく双方に対して光学的に結合した光路変換面とを有する光結合構造に おいては、屈折率分布体力もつ光閉じ込め作用によって屈折率分布体中を効率よく 伝搬してきた光が、光路変換面に効率よく入射し、光路変換面によって光導波路の 光軸方向に光路を変換し、さらに光導波路に効率よく入射することができる。また、光 導波路を伝搬してきた光は、光路変換面によって屈折率分布体の光軸方向に光路 を変換し、屈折率分布体に入射し、その光閉じ込め作用によって屈折率分布体中を 効率よく伝搬することができる。
[0023] また、本発明の光結合構造において屈折率分布体の屈折率が中心部力 周辺部 に向力つて階段状に低くなつているときには、信号光は屈折率の境界で反射されて 中心部の高屈折率領域に閉じ込められて伝搬するので、屈折率分布体が一様な屈 折率を持つ場合に比べてより高効率な信号光伝搬を実現することができる。
[0024] また、本発明の光結合構造において屈折率分布体の屈折率が中心部力 周辺部 に向力つて同心円状に漸次低くなつているときには、信号光は屈折率分布体の中心 部分を蛇行しながら閉じ込められて伝搬するので、より広帯域の信号光伝搬を行なう ことができる。
[0025] また、本発明の光結合構造にお!ヽて屈折率分布体が感光性高分子材料で形成さ れることにより、紫外光の照射によって周辺部に低屈折率領域を形成するときには、 例えば中央部のみを遮光して周辺部に開口を持ったマスクを上方に配置し、そのマ スクを通して紫外光を露光するだけで屈折率分布体が形成できるので、より簡単な製 造プロセスで光結合構造を実現することができる。
[0026] また、本発明の光結合構造にお!、て光導波路が感光性高分子材料で形成される ことにより、紫外光の照射によってコア部の周囲に低屈折率領域であるクラッド部を形 成するときには、光導波路のコアパターンに対応する部分を遮光する暗部としたフォ トマスクを使う露光工程だけで光導波路を形成することができるので、光導波路の製 造工程を短時間で済ませることができ、その製造コストを低下させることができる。
[0027] また、本発明の光結合構造において光路変換面が光導波路のコア部とクラッド部 の境界面を屈曲させて形成される場合には、別個のミラー部材を取り付ける必要がな い。また、光導波路が基板内部 (または 2つの基板の間)に形成される形態としたとき 、コア部が上部クラッド部と下部クラッド部に挟まれており、コア部とクラッド部の境界 面が 2つ存在するから、光導波路の光軸方向に垂直な方向に光路を変換する場合、 コア部とクラッド部の一方の境界面側との間で光路を変換する光路変換面と、他方の 境界面側との間で光路を変換する光路変換面のいずれも形成することができる。
[0028] また、本発明の光結合構造において光路変換面が屈折率分布体の光軸に対して 4 5度傾斜した光反射面をもつ場合には、光軸に沿って伝搬してきた信号光を屈折率 分布体の光軸と直角な方向に反射するので、基板の表面に対して光軸を直角方向 にして配置される屈折率分布体の信号光の伝搬方向を、基板の表面に対して光軸 を平行にして配置される光導波路の光軸と平行になるように変換することができる。 [0029] さらに、本発明の光結合構造において光路変換面と光導波路の端部とが間隔を空 けて対向している場合には、光路変換面からの伝搬光を光導波路に対してその端部 に直角に入射するように結合させることができるので、光路変換面を介して屈折率分 布体と光導波路との間で高効率な光結合を実現することができる。
[0030] さらに、本発明の光結合構造において屈折率分布体および光路変換面を介して光 導波路に光学的に結合しかつ活性領域を屈折率分布体に対向させた光半導体デ バイスを設けた場合には、光半導体デバイスの活性領域力ゝらの出力光が、屈折率分 布体がもつ光閉じ込め作用によって屈折率分布体を効率よく伝搬して光路変換面に 入射し、光路変換面によって光導波路の光軸方向に光路を変え、光導波路に効率 よく入射することができる。また、光導波路力 光半導体デバイスの活性領域への入 力光は、光導波路と光学的に結合した光路変換面によって屈折率分布体の光軸方 向に光路を変え、屈折率分布体に入射し、屈折率分布体がもつ光閉じ込め作用によ つて屈折率分布体を効率よく伝搬して光半導体デバイスの活性領域に入射すること ができる。
従って、本発明の光結合構造によれば、光閉じ込め作用をもつ屈折率分布体を設 けたことにより、従来の構造に対して光半導体デバイスと光導波路との光結合の結合 効率を高くすることができ、高品質で高速な信号伝送を高 、エネルギー効率で実現 することができる。
[0031] さらに、本発明の光結合構造において、光半導体デバイスが面発光型レーザダイ オードまたは面受光型フォトダイオードである場合には、屈折率分布体にこれらの光 半導体デバイスの活性領域を対向させて実装するだけで高効率な光結合が容易に 構成できるので、特別な部品を用いずとも高効率な光結合構造を容易に実現するこ とがでさる。
[0032] 本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板によれば、上記の光結合構造と、 1または 2の基板と を組合せ、基板上および Zまたは基板間に光導波路を設け、 1または 2の基板の少 なくとも 1つに屈折率分布体を形成し、かつ Zまたは基板上に光半導体デバイスを配 置したことにより、上記の光結合構造について述べた通りの効果を奏することができ る。 従って、本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板によれば、本発明の光結合構造を用いたこ とによって、高性能で高い効率を有するとともに低消費電力となる光伝送機能内蔵基 板を実現することができる。
[0033] 本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法では、第 1の基板と第 2の基板の間に形 成された光導波路において、第 1の基板に形成した屈折率分布体および第 2の基板 に形成した屈折率分布体のいずれにも光学的に結合させることができる光路変換面 を形成することができる。すなわち、光導波路ではコア部が上部クラッド部と下部クラ ッド部に挟まれており、コア部とクラッド部の境界面が 2つ存在するから、光導波路の 光軸方向とそれに垂直な方向との間で光路を変換する場合、コア部とクラッド部の一 方の境界面側との間で光路を変換する光路変換面と、他方の境界面側との間で光 路を変換する光路変換面の 、ずれも形成することができる。
発明を実施するための最良の形態
[0034] 以下、本発明の光結合構造並びに光伝送機能内蔵基板およびその製造方法につ いて、図面を参照しつつ詳細に説明する。
図 1は本発明の光結合構造およびそれを用いた本発明の光伝送機能内蔵基板の 実施の形態の一例における概略構成を示す図であり、 (a)は平面図、(b)は(a)の A —A'線における断面図である。

[0036] 図 1に示すように、本発明の光結合構造は、光導波路 4と、屈折率分布体 2と、光導 波路 4と屈折率分布体 2の間で光路を変換させるベく光導波路 4および屈折率分布 体 2の双方に対して光学的に結合した光路変換面 3aとを有する。屈折率分布体 2は 、円筒形状であり、径方向において中心部から周辺部に向かって屈折率が低くなつ ている。なお、屈折率分布体 2は、光導波路 4に対し垂直に延在することが好適であ るが、光導波路 4と光学的に結合させることができれば垂直でなくともよい。
[0037] この光結合構造を用いた光伝送機能内蔵基板は、例えば上部基板 5および下部 基板 7からなる基板内(上部基板 5と下部基板 7の間)に設けられた光路変換体 3の 光路変換面 3aに光学的に結合した光導波路 4と、上部基板 5上に活性領域を光路 変換面 3aに対向させて搭載された光半導体デバイス 1とを、上部基板 5の光半導体 デバイス 1の活性領域および光路変換面 3aの間を貫通するように設けられた、感光 性高分子材料で形成された円筒形状の屈折率分布体 2を介して光学的に結合した ものである。
[0038] 光半導体デバイス 1は、発光デバイスである半導体レーザや発光ダイオード等、あ るいは受光デバイスであるフォトダイオード等である。以下、光半導体デバイス 1が発 光デバイスである場合を例にとって説明する。
[0039] 光半導体デバイス 1は、上部基板 5上に形成された電極 6a、 6b上に活性領域であ る発光点(図示せず)を上部基板 5に向けて搭載され、その電極(図示せず)が電極 6 a、 6bに接合される。接合材料にはハンダ合金や導電性接着剤を用いることができる 。光半導体デバイス 1を搭載する際は、屈折率分布体 2を介して発光点が光路変換 面 3aと光学的に結合するように、光半導体デバイス 1を所定の位置に配置する。これ を実現するために、画像処理装置等を使って光半導体デバイス 1の位置決めを精密 に行う。
[0040] 光半導体デバイス 1に対しては、電極 6a、 6bを通して、そのアノード電極力 カソー ド電極への順方向に電流が印加される。光半導体デバイス 1の下面にアノード電極 および力ソード電極の双方がある場合は図 1に示したような搭載'接合構造で順方向 に電流を流すことができる。また、アノード電極と力ソード電極とが光半導体デバイス 1の下面と上面とに別々に形成されている場合は、実装面である下面とは反対の上 面にある電極に金属細線をボンディングする構造(図示せず)によって、順方向に電 流を流すことができる。それにより、発光デバイスである光半導体デバイス 1の活性領 域力 光が出射される。

[0088] 次に、図 6 (c)に示すように、下部基板 7の上面に突起 7aを作製する。突起 7aの断 面形状はおおよそ台形ないしは半楕円形である。突起 7aを設ける位置は、後工程で 接合される上部基板 5における屈折率分布体 21に対応する位置とする。作製方法は 、例えば、下部基板 7に貼着した銅や金などの金属膜を盛り上げ成型する方法、また は、金属材料ゃ榭脂材料で予め成型したものを基板に接着する方法等を用いる。
[0089] 次に、図 6 (d)に示すように、下部基板 7の上面に透明高分子材料を一定の厚さで 塗布し、プリベータを施して固化させる。透明高分子材料は、屈折率分布体 22の形 成材料と同じ感光性高分子材料とすることが、信号光の反射を低減する上で好適で ある。これにより、光導波路 4の下部クラッド部 4cが形成される。このとき、突起 7aを設 けた箇所は、この突起 7aの外郭形状に沿って下部クラッド部 4cが盛り上がることによ り屈曲部 4dを形成する。
[0090] 次に、図 6 (e)に示すように、下部クラッド部 4cの屈曲部 4dの表面を光反射膜 31で 被覆する。例えば、銅や金などの金属材料を、塗布、メツキもしくは蒸着などの技術 により屈曲部 4dの表面に被覆する。さらに、光反射膜 31の表面は平滑なものとする 。これにより光路変換面 31aが形成される。
[0091] 次に図 6 (f)に示すように、光反射膜 31上を含む下部クラッド部 4cの表面上に下部 クラッド部 4cよりも屈折率が高い透明高分子材料を塗布する。さらに、プリベータを施 してこの透明高分子材料を固化させ、所望するコア部 4cのパターンとなるように適宜 切削することによりコア部 4aを形成する。あるいは、上述の図 4 (c)で示したように感 光性高分子材料を塗布し、図 4 (d)及び (e)に示したように、所望するコア部のパター ンに対応したフォトマスクを介して紫外光の露光を行うことによりコア部 4aを形成する 。図 6 (f)に示すように、光路変換面 31aの部分においてコア部 4aの上面が盛り上が ることになる力 コア部 4aから上方へ光路変換する場合にはこの盛り上がりの傾斜に 従って光が進むため、有利である。
[0092] 次に図 6 (g)に示すように、ダイサー切断機等による切肖 ij、ある 、は加熱による成型 などの手法を用いてコア部 4cを表面力も部分的に除去することにより、屈曲部 4eを 形成する。屈曲部 4eを設ける位置は、屈折率分布体 22に対応する位置とする。
[0093] 次に図 6 (h)に示すように、屈曲部 4eの表面を光反射膜 32で被覆する。この方法 は、上述の図 6 (e)の光反射膜 31と同様である。これにより光路変換面 32aが形成さ れる。
[0094] 次に図 6 (i)に示すように、光反射膜 32上を含むコア部 4aの表面上に透明高分子 材料を塗布し固化させることにより上部クラッド部 4bを形成する。上部クラッド部 4bを 例えばスピンコートで形成すると、突起 7aによるコア部 4a上面の凹凸は吸収されて 上部クラッド部 4bの上面はほぼ平坦となる。最後に全体に対してポストベータを適宜 行い、硬化促進させることにより光導波路 4の作製が完了する。
[0095] さらに、図 7 (a)に示すように、下部基板 7上に形成された光導波路 4の上面に対し て、上部基板 5を貼り合わせて積層する。図示しないが、この際、上部基板 5の下面 に接着用の榭脂を塗布しておく。なお、上部基板 5には、第 1の屈折率分布体 21が 上述の図 2または図 3に示した方法で予め形成されている。第 1の屈折率分布体 21 の位置は、下部基板 7に形成された光路変換面 31aの位置に対応する。
[0096] なお、本発明は以上の実施の形態の例に限定されるものではなぐ本発明の要旨 を逸脱しない範囲で種々の変更を加えることは何ら差し支えない。例えば、上部基板 5に屈折率分布体 21を形成した後に、光半導体デバイスの搭載面 (上面)とは反対 側の面 (下面)に感光性榭脂を塗布して光導波路 4を形成し、次いで光路変換面を 設ける製造手順としてもよい。

Claims

請求の範囲
[I] 光導波路と、径方向において中心部力 周辺部に向かって屈折率が低くなる円筒 形状の屈折率分布体と、前記光導波路と前記屈折率分布体の間で光路を変換させ るべく前記光導波路および前記屈折率分布体の双方に対して光学的に結合した光 路変換面とを有する光結合構造。
[2] 前記屈折率分布体は、径方向において中心部力も周辺部に向力つて階段状に低 くなるように形成された屈折率分布を具備する、請求項 1に記載の光結合構造。
[3] 前記屈折率分布体は、径方向において中心部力も周辺部に向力つて同心円状に 漸次低くなるように形成された屈折率分布を具備する、請求項 1に記載の光結合構 造。
[4] 前記屈折率分布体は感光性高分子材料で形成され、紫外光の照射によって前記 屈折率分布を形成されている、請求項 1〜3のいずれかに記載の光結合構造。
[5] 前記光導波路は感光性高分子材料によって形成され、紫外光の照射によってコア 部と前記コア部の周囲のクラッド部とが形成されている、請求項 1〜4のいずれかに記 載の光結合構造。
[6] 前記光路変換面が前記屈折率分布体の光軸に対して傾斜した光反射面を具備し
、前記光反射面は前記光導波路のコア部とクラッド部との境界面における屈曲部に 形成されている、請求項 1〜4のいずれか〖こ記載の光結合構造。
[7] 前記光路変換面は、前記屈折率分布体の光軸に対して 45度傾斜した光反射面を 具備する、請求項 1〜6のいずれかに記載の光結合構造。
[8] 前記光路変換面と前記光導波路の端部が間隔を空けて対向している、請求項 1〜
7の 、ずれかに記載の光結合構造。
[9] 前記屈折率分布体および前記光路変換面を介して前記光導波路に光学的に結合 しかつ活性領域を前記屈折率分布体に対向させた光半導体デバイスをさらに有する
、請求項 1〜8のいずれかに記載の光結合構造。
[10] 前記光半導体デバイスがそれぞれ面発光型レーザダイオードまたは面受光型フォ トダイオードである、請求項 9に記載の光結合構造。
[II] 請求項 1〜8のいずれかに記載の光結合構造と、基板とを有し、前記光導波路およ び前記光路変換面が前記基板上に形成され、前記屈折率分布体が前記基板を貫 通して形成されて!ヽる光伝送機能内蔵基板。
[12] 請求項 1〜8のいずれかに記載の光結合構造と、第 1の基板と、前記第 1の基板と 平行に配置された第 2の基板とを有し、前記光導波路および前記光路変換面が前記 第 1と第 2の基板の間に形成され、前記屈折率分布体が前記第 1または第 2の基板を 貫通して形成されて!ヽる光伝送機能内蔵基板。
[13] 請求項 9または 10に記載の光結合構造と、基板とを有し、前記光導波路および前 記光路変換面が前記基板の一方の面上に形成され、前記光半導体デバイスが前記 基板の他方の面上に配置され、前記屈折率分布体が前記基板を貫通して形成され て ヽる光伝送機能内蔵基板。
[14] 請求項 9または 10に記載の光結合構造と、第 1の基板と、前記第 1の基板と平行に 配置された第 2の基板とを有し、前記光導波路および前記光路変換面が前記第 1と 第 2の基板の間に形成され、前記光半導体デバイスが前記第 1または第 2の基板に おける前記光導波路および前記光路変換面を形成した面と反対側の面上に配置さ れ、前記屈折率分布体が前記第 1または第 2の基板を貫通して形成されている光伝 送機能内蔵基板。
[15] 第 1の基板と、前記第 1の基板と平行に配置された第 2の基板と、前記第 1と第 2の 基板の間に形成された光導波路と、前記光導波路上の離間した位置にて前記第 1と 第 2の基板をそれぞれ貫通して形成された第 1および第 2の屈折率分布体と、前記光 導波路と前記第 1の屈折率分布体の間で光路を変換させるベく前記光導波路およ び前記第 1の屈折率分布体の双方と光学的に結合した第 1の光路変換面と、前記光 導波路と前記第 2の屈折率分布体の間で光路を変換させるベく前記光導波路およ び前記第 2の屈折率分布体の双方と光学的に結合した第 2の光路変換面とを有し、 前記光導波路と、前記第 1の屈折率分布体と、前記第 1の光路変換面とが請求項 1 〜: LOのいずれかに記載の光結合構造を形成し、かつ
前記光導波路と、前記第 2の屈折率分布体と、前記第 2の光路変換面とが請求項 1 〜10のいずれかに記載の光結合構造を形成する光伝送機能内蔵基板。
[16] 基板内部に形成された光導波路と、円筒形状の屈折率分布体と、前記光導波路と 前記屈折率分布体の間で光路を変換させるベく前記光導波路および前記屈折率分 布体の双方に対して光学的に結合した光路変換面とを有し、前記光路変換面が前 記屈折率分布体の光軸に対して傾斜した光反射面を具備し、前記光反射面は前記 光導波路のコア部とクラッド部の境界面を屈曲させて形成されている光伝送機能内 蔵基板の製造方法にぉ 、て、
前記光路変換面を形成する工程が、
コア部を形成した後、前記屈折率分布体の光軸と交わる位置において前記コア部 を除去することにより前記コア部の表面に傾斜面を形成する工程と、
前記傾斜面を光反射膜で覆うことにより前記光反射面を形成する工程と、 前記光反射膜上を含む前記コア部上にクラッド部を形成する工程とを含むことを特 徴とする光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法。
基板内部に形成された光導波路と、円筒形状の屈折率分布体と、前記光導波路と 前記屈折率分布体の間で光路を変換させるベく前記光導波路および前記屈折率分 布体の双方に対して光学的に結合した光路変換面とを有し、前記光路変換面が前 記屈折率分布体の光軸に対して傾斜した光反射面を具備し、前記光反射面は前記 光導波路のコア部とクラッド部の境界面を屈曲させて形成されている光伝送機能内 蔵基板の製造方法にぉ 、て、
前記光路変換面を形成する工程が、
クラッド部を形成するに先立って、前記屈折率分布体の光軸と交わる位置において 突起を形成する工程と、
前記突起上に前記突起の外郭形状に沿ってクラッド部を形成することにより前記ク ラッド部の表面に傾斜面を形成する工程と、
前記傾斜面を光反射膜で覆うことにより前記光反射面を形成する工程と、 前記光反射膜上を含む前記クラッド部上にコア部を形成する工程とを含むことを特 徴とする光伝送機能内蔵基板の製造方法。
