Lm? M Mgg" UNITED STATES rPATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR L. HALLIDAY, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BIGE- LOW CARPET COMPANY, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,457, dated September 13, 1881.
Application filed July 29, 1881. Term of patent 35 years.
To all whom @t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. HALLIDAY, of Yonkers, in the county of NYestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel grouping and contiguration of figures, hereinafter more fully described.
The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.
On the background of this carpet are tive distinct tloral ornaments, that are marked respectively I, J, H, a, and b. By examining the upper part of the photograph it will appear that four figures I are set in the angles of a diamond, and that between the upper Iigure I and the one next below it at the lett is the figure J, and between the upper ligure I and that next below it at the right are the gures cv b, the iigure H being in the center ot' the diamond. All the said figures are connected with each other by projecting sprays, to make one harmonious design, and yet each iigure in itself is of peculiar and different outline.
The figure I represents a bouquet of roses, with fernlike leaves projecting from opposite sides, and also with a cactus-like fleshy branch of leaves projecting upwardly toward the left. At the upper part, on the right of the ligure I, is an angular geometrical figure, as shown.
The figure J is a bouquet of many flowers, having extending from it in all directions eactus-like iieshy leaves.
The ligure H is a bouquet of flowers set below an angular reversed letter S, with roseleaves extending from the bouquet, and above this angular ornamentis a rosein blossom, with leaves extending sidewise and upward.
The figure a is a bouquet of roses, withleaves and sprays projecting upwardly.
The gure bis also a bouquet of roses, with short leaves projecting downward and upward, and this gure appears to be set also on an angular design. Apparently isolated leaves are interspersed between the figure b and the Iigure H, also between the figure I and gure H, and said isolated leaves are, in fact, used to till up the space ou the background that would otherwise remain blank. Each of these leaves has moss-like projections, that join it tothe remaining gures.
The arrangement of bouquets, joined by graceful sprays into one harmonious design, and set, many of them, upon configurations ot' geometrical outline, gives to this carpet a peculiar and novel appearance.
I claiml. The design for carpets, consisting of the ligure I, substantially as shown.
2. The design for carpets, consisting ot' the gure J, substantially as shown.
3. The design for carpets, consisting of the figure H, substantially as shown.
4. The design for carpets, consisting of the gure a, substantially as shown.
5. The design for carpets, consisting ot' the figure b, substantially as shown.
6. The design for carpets, consisting of the iigures I J H a b, substantially as shown.
7. The design for carpets, consisting of the gures I J H a b and the leaves with mosslike projections interspersed between said tigures.
ARTHUR L. HALLIDAY.
