DESIGN.
J. CAMPBELL. Carpet.
No. 11,037. Patented Feb, 25,1879.
UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFIoE.
JOHN CAMPBELL, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO BIGELOVV CARPET COMPANY, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR CARPET.
Specification forming part of Design No. 11,037, dated February 25, 1879; application filed January 16, 1879. [Term of patent 3% years] To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN CAMPBELL, of London, in the Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented a new and original Design for a Carpet, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a new and origi nal design for carpets, oil-cloths, and similar fabrics; and consists of the new configuration and ornamentationof parts hereinafter more fully pointed out.
The aceompanyin g photographic illustration represents a face view of my new design.
A is one figure of the carpet. Around the same are represented cross-shaped figures a a, 850. These cross-shaped figures are arranged in parallel rows, as shown, and are connected by approximately rectangular figures b b, 850., so that each figure A remains between four figures a and four figures b. Each of the figures b has three straight sides and one curved, wave-like side, which faces the figure A, as shown.
The above-described groups of figures inclose two different kinds of spaces. Within the first kind of these spaces, A, is represented a group, 0, formed of a tree, of flowers and leaves, as shown, while the second kind of spaces, B, which is faced by the straight lines of the rectangles b, contains a circular figure, d, with scalloped outline. This circular figure is divided by a diagonal zigzag line, 0, into two fields, each of such fields being ornamented by groups of flowers and leaves, as shown.
Each of the crossshaped figures a a, &c., consists of wings and a center-piece, each wing being made of difi'erent outline than the other wings on the same figure, while the center-piece is made of circular form, and resembles in outline the figure 01, above described. Each wing of the cross-shaped figures a a,
850., contains, moreover, a small ornamentation, which is different from the ornamentations on the other wings of the same figure. 1 have shown as such ornamentation the following figures, viz: two squares in one wing placed diagonally adjoining each other, two
adjoining rectangles in another wing, two squares placed side by side in one wing, two fan-shaped figures in one wing, two circles in one wing, one rectangle in one wing, three circles in one wing, andtwo hexagons in one wing; but it is evident that other ornaments may be substituted for the above without changing the characteristic features of my design.
The figures b b, &c., are embellished b groups of leaves, as shown.
I claim- 1. The design for a carpet, consisting of the crossshaped figures a a, &c., arranged as described, and connected by the rectangular figures b b, substantially as shown.
2. The design for a carpet, consisting of the cross-shaped figure a, which is composed of a center-piece and series of wings, each of the wings on each figure being made of different out-line, substantially as shown.
3. The design for a carpet, consisting of the cross-shaped figure a, provided with ihedii ferent ornamentations on the wings, substantially as shown.
4. The design for a carpet, consisting of figures b 12, made with three straight and one curved, wave-like side, and embellished by groups of leaves, substantially as shown.
5. The design for a carpet, consisting of the group 0 in the field A, said group being formed of the tree and flowers and leaves, substantially as shown;
6. The design for a carpet, consisting of the circular scalloped figure (1, divided by a diagonal line, 6, into two fields, and ornamented, substantially as shown.
7. The design for a carpet, consisting of the figures a I), group 0, and figure d, substantially as shown.
The foregoing description of my invention signed by me this 3d day of December, 1878.
JOHN CAMPBELL.
