Abstract

균일한 크기의 액정 도메인, 그 형성방법 및 중합체 분산 액정 디스플레이에서의 그 효능이 개시된다.
본 발명의 방법은 중합체로 둘러싼 액정 (Polymer Encased Liquid Crystal, PELC)으로 알려진, 중합체 쉘로 둘러싸여진 액정 불연속 도메인을 형성할 수 있게 한다. 나아가, 이 방법은 균일한 크기의 입자를 갖는 PELC를 제조할 수 있게 한다. 균일한 크기의 PELC를 포함하여 만들어지 표시장치는 통상의 중합체 분산 액정공정으로 제조된 표시장치보다 전자-광학적 성능이 크게 개선됨을 보여준다.

제7도는 넓은 입자크기분포와 좁은 입자크기분포를 갖는 입자들로부터 형성한 PDLC 피막에 대한 투과%와 전압과의 관계곡선(넓온 분포를 갖는 입자로부터 형성된 필름의 Nmax는 1.6이며, 좁은 분포를 갖는 입자로부터 형성된 필름의 Nmax는 6.3이다.)

Claims (10)

  1. 수성매질내에 분산된 액정 (liquid crystals)을 포함하여 구성되고, 소적의 입자크기는 직경이 0.15미크론-15미크론 범위이며 복잡분산도(polydispersities)는 1.3 미만인, 복수의 균일한 크기의 구형 도메인.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 도매인은 중합체내의 둘러싸여진 액정으로 구성되어 복수의 입자를 이루며, 상기 액정은 상기 중합체내에서 하나 이상의 도메인으로 존재함을 특징으로 하는 도메인.
  3. 제2항에 있어서, 상기 액정은 연속중합체 쉘로 둘러싸인 단일 도메인으로 존재함을 특징으로 하는 도메인.
  4. 청구범의 제3항의 도메인 (입자)로 형성된 피막.
  5. 정해진 입력에 응답하여 및을 선택적으로 산란시키거나 투과시키는 액정수단을 포함하고, 그 액정수단은 연속 중합체 쉘내에 둘러싸인 액정 도메인을 갖는 균일한 크기의 입자를 포함하며, 상기 입자는 직경이 0. 150미크론-15미크론 범위의 입자크기를 갖는 복잡분산도가 1.3미만이며, 또한 상기 액정수단을 지지하는 지지매체수단을 포함하는, 액정장치.
  6. 제5항에 있어서, 상기 액정수단은 피막의 전체두께를 기준으로 1미크론 두께당 1.2볼트미만의 전압에서 산란광을 투과광으로 변화시킴을 특징으로 하는 장치.
  7. a) 하나 이상의 제1에틸렌계 불포화 단량체를 중합하여 예비-종자 입자(pre-seed particle)를 형성하는 단계; b) 상기 예비-종자 에멀션의 존재하에 하나 이상의 제2에틸렌계 불포화 단량체를 수성 에멀션중합하여 종자입자의 에멀션을 형성하는 단계; c) 상기 종자입자 에멀션에 하나 이상의 액체 유기물질을 첨가하여 종자 입자와 유기액체의 에멀션을 형성하는 단계; d) 상기 액체 유기물질과 종자입자로 하여금 유기액체를 함유한 본질적으로 단순분산 도메인을 형성케하고, 상기 도메인의 도메인 크기가 직경이 0.150미크론-15미크론이며 복잡분산도가 1.3 미만으로 되게 하는 단계;를 포함하는 균일한 크기의 도메인 형성방법.
  8. 제7항에 있어서, 상기 유기액체 물질은 액정물질인을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  9. 제7항에 있어서, 상기 유기액체는 잉크, 토너, 염료, 풍미제, 향료, 살균제, 방미제, 살충제, 농약, 해양 오염방지제, 약학적으로 수용가능한 약제 및 제초제로 구성되는 그룹으로부터 선택됨을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  10. 제8항에 있어서, 나아가 상기 종자입자와 상기 액체유기물질의 에멀션에 한가지 이상의 단량체를 첨가하는 단계; 및 상기 액체유기물질과 상기 종자입자가 본질적으로 단순분산 도메인을 형성한 후에 상기 단량체를 중합하여 액체 유기 도메인을 갖는 중합체 입자를 형성하는 단계;를 포함함을 특징으로 하는 방법.
