Description
まず、配向規制力の大きさを表す液晶のアンカリング力は次の方法で測定できる。すなわち、2枚一組のガラス基板に配向膜を塗布して光配向処理を行い、その2枚の配向膜の配向方向が平行となるようにして、適当な厚みdのスペーサを介在させて、評価用ホモジニアス配向液晶セルを作製する。これに材料物性が既知のカイラル剤入りネマチック液晶材料(らせんピッチp、弾性定数K2)を封入し、配向を安定化させるために一度液晶等方相に評価用セルを保持した後、室温に戻し、以下の方法でツイスト角φ2を測定する。
試験用の配向膜には、以下のようなものを用いた。(化2)のポリイミドの前駆体となるポリアミド酸の骨格について、第1の配向膜の成分として

Claims (13)
- 画素電極とTFTとを備え、配向膜が形成されたTFT基板と、前記TFT基板に対向して配置され、前記TFT基板側に配向膜が形成された対向基板と、前記TFT基板の配向膜と前記対向基板の配向膜との間に液晶が挟持された液晶表示装置であって、前記配向膜は偏光光照射により液晶配向規制力を付与された光配向膜であり、
前記光配向膜の最表面層は液晶配向規制力を有し、
前記表面層の酸素原子の割合が、前記配向膜の膜厚の1/2の位置における酸素原子の割合よりも大きく、
前記光配向膜の光学異方性がリタデーション値で1.0nmより小さいことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 画素電極とTFTとを備え、配向膜が形成されたTFT基板と、前記TFT基板に対向して配置され、前記TFT基板側に配向膜が形成された対向基板と、前記TFT基板の配向膜と前記対向基板の配向膜との間に液晶が挟持された液晶表示装置であって、前記配向膜は偏光光照射により液晶配向規制力を付与された光配向膜であり、
前記光配向膜の最表面層は液晶配向規制力を有し、
前記表面層の酸素原子の割合が、前記配向膜の膜厚の1/2の位置における酸素原子の割合よりも大きく、
前記光配向膜の光学的異方性がオーダパラメータで0.1以下であることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶表示装置において、前記光配向膜表面の配向規制力が光学ツイスト角から得られるアンカリング強度1.0×10−3J/m2以上であることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶表示装置において、前記光配向膜の表面凹凸の大きさが二乗平均平方根で1nm以下であることを特徴とする請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶表示装置において、前記光配向膜が前記TFT基板もしくは前記対向基板のうち、いずれか一方にのみ形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶表示装置において、前記配向膜が光分解型の光配向膜であることを特徴とする請求項1から5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶表示装置において、前記配向膜が2種類の積層した構造からなり、光配向が可能な光配向性の上層と前記光配向性の上層よりも抵抗率が小さい低抵抗性の下層からなる2層構造であることを特徴とする請求項1から7のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶表示装置において、前記液晶表示装置がIPS方式の液晶表示装置であることを特徴とする請求項1から8のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 画素電極とTFTとを備え、配向膜が形成されたTFT基板と、前記TFT基板に対向して配置され、前記TFT基板側に配向膜が形成された対向基板と、前記TFT基板の配向膜と前記対向基板の配向膜の間に液晶が挟持された液晶表示装置の製造方法であって、
前記画素電極と前記TFTとを含む前記TFT基板を準備する工程と、
前記TFT基板または前記対向基板の上に、前記配向膜を形成する工程と、
前記配向膜へ偏光した紫外線を照射し、その後前記配向膜を酸化処理する工程と、
配向規制力を付与された前記配向膜を有する配向膜付きの前記TFT基板および前記対向基板とを貼り合わせる工程と、
前記貼り合わせる工程中もしくは前記貼り合わせる工程後に前記TFT基板と前記対向基板との間に液晶を封入する工程と、を有することを特徴とする液晶表示装置の製造方法。 - 前記液晶表示装置において、前記配向膜中に架橋剤が添加され、前記配向膜への偏光した紫外線照射する工程後から、前記TFT基板および前記対向基板を貼り合わせる工程までの間に架橋処理を施したことを特徴とする請求項10に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記液晶表示装置の製造方法において、前記配向膜への偏光した紫外線照射する工程後から、前記TFT基板および前記対向基板を貼り合わせる工程までの間に、180℃以上の温度で加熱処理しないことを特徴とする請求項10から11のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記液晶表示装置の製造方法において、前記配向膜への偏光した紫外線照射する工程後から、前記TFT基板および前記対向基板を貼り合わせる工程までの間に、120℃以上の温度で加熱処理しないことを特徴とする請求項12に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
