Description
本発明は、各ピクセルが複数の高品質色状態を表示することができる、フルカラーディスプレイデバイスと、そのような電気泳動ディスプレイのための電気泳動流体とを対象とする。

(b)第1の種類の粒子、第2の種類の粒子、第3の種類の粒子、および第4の種類の粒子が、溶媒または溶媒混合物中に分散され、第1および第2の種類の粒子が、高レベルの電荷を帯びて反対に荷電し、第3および第4の種類の粒子が、低レベルの電荷を帯びて反対に荷電する、電気泳動流体と、
を備え、ピクセルのそれぞれは、少なくとも5つの異なる色状態を表示することが可能である、電気泳動ディスプレイを対象とする。
(a)高く正に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有する電場の印加が、第1の表面で高く正に荷電した粒子の光学特性を表示させるか、または
(b)高く負に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有する電場の印加が、第1の表面で高く負に荷電した粒子の光学特性を表示させるか、または
(c)いったん高く正に荷電した粒子の光学特性が第1の表面で表示されると、低く負に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有するが、高く正に荷電した粒子と高く負に荷電した粒子との間の引力を克服するために十分に強くないが、他の反対に荷電した粒子の間の引力を克服するために十分である、電場の印加が、第1の表面で低く負に荷電した粒子の光学特性を表示させるか、または
(d)いったん高く負に荷電した粒子の光学特性が第1の表面で表示されると、低く正に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有するが、高く正に荷電した粒子と高く負に荷電した粒子との間の引力を克服するために十分に強くないが、他の反対に荷電した粒子の間の引力を克服するために十分である、電場の印加が、第1の表面で低く正に荷電した粒子の光学特性を表示させるか、または
(e)振動波形の印加が、第1の表面で第5の光学特性を表示させ得る。

前記ピクセルのそれぞれは、黄、マゼンタ、およびシアン色の状態を表示することが可能である、項目4に記載のディスプレイ。

前記4種類の粒子は、赤、緑、青、および白色の粒子であるか、または前記4種類の粒子は、赤、黄、青、および白色の粒子であるか、もしくは前記4種類の粒子は、シアン、マゼンタ、黄、および白色の粒子である、項目1に記載のディスプレイ。
(項目10)
前記低レベルの電荷は、前記高レベルの電荷の約50%未満である、項目1に記載のディスプレイ。
(項目11)
前記低レベルの電荷は、前記高レベルの電荷の約75%未満である、項目1に記載のディスプレイ。
(項目12)
前記電気泳動流体はさらに、実質的に荷電していない中立浮力粒子を備える、項目1に記載のディスプレイ。
(項目13)
前記実質的に荷電していない中立浮力粒子は、荷電していない、項目12に記載のディスプレイ。
(項目14)
電気泳動流体を含み、対向する側面に第1および第2の表面を有する、ディスプレイ層であって、前記電気泳動流体は、全てが溶媒または溶媒混合物中に分散される、高く正に荷電した粒子、高く負に荷電した粒子、低く正に荷電した粒子、および低く負に荷電した粒子を備え、前記4種類の粒子は、それぞれ、相互と異なる光学特性を有し、したがって、

(c)いったん前記高く正に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性が前記第1の表面で表示されると、低く負に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有するが、前記高く正に荷電した粒子と前記高く負に荷電した粒子との間の引力を克服するために十分に強くないが、他の反対に荷電した粒子の間の引力を克服するために十分である、電場の印加が、前記第1の表面で前記低く負に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性を表示させるか、または

より低く荷電した粒子の電荷が、より高く荷電した粒子の電荷の約50%未満である、項目14に記載の層。
(項目19)
より低く荷電した粒子の電荷が、より高く荷電した粒子の電荷の約75%未満である、項目14に記載の層。
(項目20)
前記4種類の粒子のうちのいずれも黒色の粒子ではなく、前記第5の光学特性は、黒色の状態である、項目14に記載の層。
本発明の電気泳動流体は、誘電性溶媒または溶媒混合物中に分散される4種類の粒子を含む。例証を容易にするために、4種類の色素粒子は、図1に示されるように、第1の種類(11)、第2の種類(12)、第3の種類(13)、および第4の種類(14)の粒子と称され得る。しかしながら、4種類のみの色素粒子では、電気泳動流体を利用するディスプレイデバイスは、少なくとも5つの異なる色状態を表示し得、これがフルカラーディスプレイに至る。

Claims (7)
- ディスプレイ層であって、前記ディスプレイ層は、電気泳動流体を含み、前記ディスプレイ層は、対向する側面に第1および第2の表面を有し、前記電気泳動流体は、全てが溶媒または溶媒混合物中に分散される、高く正に荷電した粒子、高く負に荷電した粒子、低く正に荷電した粒子、および低く負に荷電した粒子を備え、前記4種類の粒子は、それぞれ、相互と異なる光学特性を有し、したがって、
(a)前記高く正に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有する電場の印加が、前記第1の表面で前記高く正に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性を表示させ、かつ、
(b)高く負に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有する電場の印加が、前記第1の表面で前記高く負に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性を表示させ、かつ、
(c)いったん前記高く正に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性が前記第1の表面で表示されると、低く負に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有するが、前記高く正に荷電した粒子と前記高く負に荷電した粒子との間の引力を克服するために十分に強くないが、他の反対に荷電した粒子の間の引力を克服するために十分である、電場の印加が、前記第1の表面で前記低く負に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性を表示させ、かつ、
(d)いったん前記高く負に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性が前記第1の表面で表示されると、前記低く正に荷電した粒子と同一の極性を有するが、前記高く正に荷電した粒子と前記高く負に荷電した粒子との間の引力を克服するために十分に強くないが、他の反対に荷電した粒子の間の引力を克服するために十分である、電場の印加が、前記第1の表面で前記低く正に荷電した粒子の前記光学特性を表示させ、かつ、
(e)振動波形の印加が、前記第1の表面で第5の光学特性を表示させ、
前記第5の光学特性は、前記4種類の粒子の各々の前記光学特性と異なり、
前記電気泳動流体はさらに、実質的に荷電していない中立浮力粒子を備える、層。 - 前記4種類の粒子は、赤色、緑色、青色、および白色の粒子である、請求項1に記載の層。
- 前記4種類の粒子は、赤色、黄色、青色、および白色の粒子である、請求項1に記載の層。
- 前記4種類の粒子は、シアン色、マゼンタ色、黄色、および白色の粒子である、請求項1に記載の層。
- より低く荷電した粒子の電荷が、より高く荷電した粒子の電荷の50%未満である、請求項1に記載の層。
- より低く荷電した粒子の電荷が、より高く荷電した粒子の電荷の75%未満である、請求項1に記載の層。
- 前記4種類の粒子のうちのいずれも黒色の粒子ではなく、前記第5の光学特性は、黒色の状態である、請求項1に記載の層。
