Description
図1に示した液晶表示装置における第1電極11および第2電極12を、文字、7セグメントおよび意匠形状等の複数の任意の形状を有するセグメント表示を行うための構造としたセグメント表示型の液晶表示装置を作製した。なお、第1電極11がコモン電極に相当し、第2電極11がセグメント電極に相当する。
上記した図1に示した液晶表示装置において、第1電極11、第2電極12を短冊状とし、両者を交差させたドットマトリクス電極構造において、1画素の大きさを0.42mm平方とし、各短冊状電極の間隔を0.03mmとした液晶表示装置を作製した。これと併せて、実施例1で示したセグメント表示型の電極構造を有する液晶表示装置も作製した。
上記した図1に示した液晶表示装置において、実施例1と同様なセグメント表示型の電極構造を有する液晶表示装置を作製した。第1基板1(コモン基板)の第1電極11には、上記の図2(d)に示した十字状の各開口部15が画素内で設けられた。各開口部15は、それぞれの重心を平面視において上下左右の各方向に規則的に配置された。なお、実施例1の場合と同様に各開口部は表示部内で一方の電極に配置されているがすべての表示部で一方の電極に配置される必要はなく、表示部ごとに一方または他方の電極に開口部を配置してもよい
上記の実施例3と同構造の液晶表示装置において、さらに液晶層3にカイラル材を混入することによって電圧印加時の液晶層3にねじれ構造を導入した場合について以下に説明する。
次に、開口部15の形状の相違による効果の違いについて理論的な観点から説明する。
Claims (5)
- 一面側に第1電極を有する第1基板と、
一面側に第2電極を有し、前記第1基板と対向配置された第2基板と、
89.7°以上90°未満に設定されたプレティルト角を有しており、前記第1基板の前記第1電極と前記第2基板の前記第2電極との間に配置された液晶層と、
を含み、
前記第1電極と前記第2電極は、各々対向する領域で画素を形成し、
前記第1電極は、前記画素内で平面視において規則的に配置された矩形状の複数の開口部を有し、
前記複数の開口部は、第1方向に長手方向を向けた複数の第1開口部と、前記第1方向とは異なる第2方向に長手方向を向けた複数の第2開口部を有し、
前記第1開口部及び前記第2開口部の各長手方向と前記液晶層の略中央における液晶分子の配向方向とのなす角度が平面視で0°以上90°未満である、
液晶表示装置。 - 前記複数の開口部は、前記第1方向及び前記第2方向のいずれとも異なる第3方向に長手方向を向けた複数の第3開口部を更に有し、
前記第3開口部の長手方向と前記液晶層の略中央における液晶分子の配向方向とのなす角度が0°以上90°未満である、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 一面側に第1電極を有する第1基板と、
一面側に第2電極を有し、前記第1基板と対向配置された第2基板と、
89.7°以上90°未満に設定されたプレティルト角を有しており、前記第1基板の前記第1電極と前記第2基板の前記第2電極との間に配置された液晶層と、
を含み、
前記第1電極と前記第2電極は、各々対向する領域で画素を形成し、
前記第1電極は、前記画素内で平面視において規則的に配置された複数の開口部を有し、
前記複数の開口部の各々は、第1方向に長手方向を向けた矩形状の第1部位と、当該第1方向とは異なる第2方向に長手方向を向けた矩形状の第2部位を含む十字状の外縁を有し、
前記第1部位及び前記第2部位の各長手方向と前記液晶層の略中央における液晶分子の配向方向とのなす角度が平面視で0°以上90°未満である、
液晶表示装置。 - 一面側に第1電極を有する第1基板と、
一面側に第2電極を有し、前記第1基板と対向配置された第2基板と、
89.7°以上90°未満に設定されたプレティルト角を有しており、前記第1基板の前記第1電極と前記第2基板の前記第2電極との間に配置された液晶層と、
を含み、
前記第1電極と前記第2電極は、各々対向する領域で画素を形成し、
前記第1電極は、前記画素内で平面視において規則的に配置された複数の開口部を有し、
前記複数の開口部の各々は、第1方向に長手方向を向けた矩形状の第1部位、前記第1方向とは異なる第2方向に長手方向を向けた矩形状の第2部位、前記第1方向及び前記第2方向のいずれとも異なる第3方向に長手方向を向けた矩形状の第3部位を含むY字状の外縁を有し、
前記第1部位、前記第2部位及び前記第3部位の各長手方向と前記液晶層の略中央における液晶分子の配向方向とのなす角度が平面視で0°以上90°未満である、
液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶層にカイラル材が添加されている、請求項1〜4の何れか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。
