Abstract
【解決手段】エレクトロクロミック表示素子10は、表示基板11と、表示基板11と対向する対向基板12とを有し、対向基板12の表示基板11と対向する側に、対向電極16が形成されており、表示基板11の対向基板12と対向する側に、第一の表示電極14a及び第一のエレクトロクロミック層15aが順次積層されており、表示基板11と対向基板12との間に、多孔質膜13が形成されており、多孔質膜13の表示基板11と対向する側に、第二の表示電極14b及び第二のエレクトロクロミック層15bが順次積層されており、多孔質膜13の対向基板12と対向する側に、第三の表示電極14c及び第三のエレクトロクロミック層15cが順次積層されており、表示基板11と対向基板12との間に、電解質溶液17が存在する。

(式中、kは、0、1又は2である。)
で表される基から選なる群より選択される置換基を有し、X−は、1価のアニオンであり、nは、0、1又は2であり、Aは、置換基を有していてもよい炭素数が1〜20のアルキレン基、アリーレン基又は2価の複素環基である。)
で表されるジピリジン系化合物を含むことが好ましい。ジピリジン系化合物は、発色及び消色の電位が低いため、還元電位により良好な発色の色値を示す。
なお、エレクトロクロミック表示素子は、電子ペーパー、調光素子等の表示装置に適用することができる。
(第一の表示要素Aの作製)
まず、40mm×40mmのガラス基板(表示基板11)上の30mm×38mmの領域に、スパッタ法により、厚さが100nmのITO膜(第一の表示電極14a)を形成した。第一の表示電極14aの端部間のシート抵抗を測定したところ、約200Ωであった。
40mm×40mmのガラス基板上に、テープを用いて、40mm×30mmのポリエチレン多孔質膜サンマップLCシリーズ(日東電工社製)(多孔質膜13)を固定した後、多孔質膜13上の35mm×30mmの領域に、スパッタ法により、厚さが100nmのITO膜(第二の表示電極14b)を形成した。第二の表示電極14bの端部間のシート抵抗を測定したところ、約200Ωであった。
40mm×40mmのガラス基板(対向基板12)上の20mm×25mmの領域に、スパッタ法により、厚さが100nmのITO膜を形成した。次に、ITO膜上に、平均一次粒径が30nmの酸化スズ粒子(三菱マテリアル社製)の20質量%2,2,3,3−テトラフルオロプロパノール分散液をスピンコート法により塗布した後、120℃で15分間アニール処理することにより、厚さが2μmの酸化スズ粒子を含む膜を形成し、対向電極16を形成した。
対向電極16上に、表示要素Bの第三のエレクトロクロミック層15cを置いた後、過塩素酸テトラブチルアンモニウムの0.1Mジメチルスルホキシド溶液(電解質溶液17)を滴下した。次に、75μmのスペーサ18を介して、表示要素Aの第一の表示電極14aが対向電極16と対向するように、貼り合わせて、電解質溶液17を封入することにより、エレクトロクロミック表示素子を得た(図4参照)。
エレクトロクロミック表示素子の第一の表示電極14aと第二の表示電極14bの間及び第二の表示電極14bと第三の表示電極14cの間の抵抗を測定した。その結果、表示電極の端部間のシート抵抗の約500倍である100kΩ以上の良好な絶縁性が得られた。
エレクトロクロミック表示素子に電圧を印加し、発色及び消色を評価した。このとき、印加する電圧を3.0Vとし、電圧を印加する時間を2秒間とした。なお、表示電極を負極に接続し、対向電極を正極に接続した。

- 表示基板と、該表示基板と対向する対向基板とを有し、
該対向基板の該表示基板と対向する側に、対向電極が形成されており、
該表示基板の該対向基板と対向する側に、第一の表示電極及び第一のエレクトロクロミック層が積層されており、
該表示基板と該対向基板との間に、単一の多孔質膜が形成されており、
該多孔質膜の該表示基板と対向する側に、第二の表示電極及び第二のエレクトロクロミック層が積層されており、
該多孔質膜の該対向基板と対向する側に、第三の表示電極及び第三のエレクトロクロミック層が積層されており、
該表示基板と該対向基板との間に、電解質が存在することを特徴とするエレクトロクロミック表示素子。 - 前記第一のエレクトロクロミック層、前記第二のエレクトロクロミック層及び前記第三のエレクトロクロミック層は、それぞれエレクトロクロミック化合物を担持している金属酸化物粒子を含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のエレクトロクロミック表示素子。
- 前記第一の表示電極、前記第二の表示電極及び前記第三の表示電極は、互いに重なっていない領域を有することを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載のエレクトロクロミック表示素子。
- 前記第一の表示電極は、前記対向基板上に形成されている第一の取り出し部と電気的に接続されており、
前記第二の表示電極は、前記表示基板上に形成されている導電性膜を介して、前記対向基板上に形成されている第二の取り出し部と電気的に接続されており、
前記第三の表示電極は、前記対向基板上に形成されている第三の取り出し部と電気的に接続されていることを特徴とする請求項3に記載のエレクトロクロミック表示素子。 - 前記多孔質膜は、前記第二の表示電極が前記導電性膜と電気的に接続されている領域及び前記第三の表示電極が前記第三の取り出し部と電気的に接続されている領域において、孔が埋められている、又は、孔が形成されていないことを特徴とする請求項4に記載のエレクトロクロミック表示素子。
- 請求項1乃至5のいずれか一項に記載のエレクトロクロミック表示素子を有することを特徴とする表示装置。
