Description
本発明の実施の形態により、コンピュータネットワーク経由での、各種A/Vソース装置からクライアント装置へのA/Vコンテンツ配布が可能になる。本明細書で用いるように、A/Vコンテンツには、オーディオ、またはビデオ、またはその両方、を含む任意の種類のメディアコンテンツが含まれる。一実施の形態では、パーソナルメディア放送局は、入力として、オーディオ、またはビデオ信号を取り込み、そのコンテンツをデジタル化、および圧縮し(例えば、Windows Media Video、MPEG−4、またはH.264に)、そしてIPネットワーク(IP4、またはIP6等)経由で、コンテンツを見るため、および/または聴くためのクライアント装置に向けてコンテンツをストリーミングする。組み込み型ソリューションとして実装されるパーソナル放送局により、ユーザは、赤外線、またはシリアルのコマンドを経由した、「channel up」等のコントロールコマンドをネットワーク経由で送り返して、発信源装置に実行させることができる。本発明の多様な実施の形態を用いて、ユーザは、ケーブルまたは衛星セットトップボックス、個人用ビデオレコーダ、DVDプレーヤ、DVDジュークボックス、音楽サーバ、衛星ラジオ受信器、カムコーダ、デジタルビデオレコーダ(DVR)、または任意の他のA/Vソースコンポーネントをパーソナル放送局に接続できる。これにより、ユーザは、任意のネットワーク接続装置から、これらソースのライブ出力を視聴したり、操作したりできる。本発明の多様な実施の形態には、パーソナル放送局、およびメディアプレーヤを含む、異なるコンポーネントを含めことができる。メディアプレーヤは、パーソナル放送局が創出するメディアストリームを受信するよう構成したクライアント装置上で走るソフトウエアアプリケーションでもよい。様々なクライアントソフトウエアが、パーソナルコンピュータ、および携帯電話等の、異なるクラスのクライアント装置のために存在してもよい。クライアントは、ウェブブラウザーインターフェースを介してパーソナル放送局に接続してもよい。
図1は、本発明の一実施の形態による、メディア放送システムのブロック図である。図示のように、パーソナルメディア放送局100は、各種のA/Vソース装置120から入力ビデオ信号を受け取るよう構成される。例えば、アナログA/V出力を有する任意のコンポーネント、または装置を、パーソナル放送局100に接続できる。接続したA/Vソース装置120からのビデオ、および/またはオーディオの供給を受け取ると、パーソナル放送局は、デジタル化、符号化し、デジタル圧縮したメディアをホームインターネットゲートウエイ110に向けてストリーミングする。ゲートウエイ110は、ルータ、スイッチまたはハブ、および/またはアナログ式、DSL式、ケーブル式、または他の形式のブロードバンドモデムを含む一台以上の別体の装置を備えてもよく、またはゲートウエイ110は、一つ以上のこれらの機能を含む単一の装置を備えてもよい。

上記説明のように、パーソナルメディア放送局の実施の形態により、ユーザは、リモート、またはローカルネットワークに接続したクライアントからA/Vソース装置を操作できる。クライアントによりユーザの特定モデルのA/Vソース装置の操作が可能である。パーソナル放送局、およびクライアントの最初の構成時に、ユーザは、どのメーカーのどのモデルのA/Vソース装置をユーザが操作したいのかを、指示する(例えば、TiVo個人用ビデオレコーダーシリーズ2)。次いで、クライアント上の構成ソフトウエアが、問題の特定A/Vソースと対応する赤外線、またはシリアルのコードのグループを識別する。これは、同梱のソフトウエアとともに配布されているデータベース、中央サーバに常駐する更新されたデータベース、またはパーソナル放送局に常駐するデータベースを検索することにより、実行できる。
放送局が、ローカルエリアネットワーク、および各種のリモートネットワークに接続される多様なクライアント装置形式によるメディアストリームのアクセスを可能にするので、一端のパーソナル放送局と、他端のローカルクライアントおよびリモートクライアントとの間の利用可能なデータスループットは、ネットワークトポロジーに基づいて大きく変動し得る。競合トラフィック、および一般的なネットワーク混雑状況により、所与の接続でかなりのスループット変化がある場合も考えられる。本発明の一実施の形態では、利用可能なネットワーク帯域幅、およびクライアント装置の能力に基づいてオーディオ圧縮(例えば、ビットレートおよびサンプリングレート)、およびビデオ圧縮(例えば、ビットレート、解像度、およびフレームレート)を最適化するための方法を実装する。
パーソナル放送局とクライアントとの間のデータスループットは、適切な符号器設定の重要な一決定因子であり、視聴するコンテンツの種類も、重要な基準である。例えば、スポーツ番組の速い動きのビデオは、動きが少ないのが特徴であるトーク番組より高いフレームレートを要求する。同様に、動きがほとんどないビデオは、許容される品質を達成するのに、速い動きのビデオよりかなり低いビットレート、または解像度、しか要求しない。これは、動きの遅いビデオの方が効率的に符号化される傾向があるからである。従って、符号器設定は、符号化する番組の種類に基づいて選択できる。
本発明の一実施の形態によれば、パーソナルメディア放送局は、バッファリングスキームを実装して、クライアント装置からのフィードバックを要求せずに、バッファーリソースを管理する。上記説明のように、放送局およびクライアントは、トランスポートプロトコルとしてTCPを用いて通信でき、その場合は放送局がサーバとして働く。利点は、TCPは、信頼性が高いプロトコルであり、送信データは常に正しい順序で宛先に届くことが保証されている、という点にある。サーバ上のTCPスタックのパラメータ、および/または振る舞いをモニタして、一つ以上の既知の技法により、ネットワークの混み具合、および速度を推定できる。
従来は、ストリーミングメディアプレーヤがコマンドを受信して、メディアストリームを再生する場合、メディアプレーヤは、オーディオ/ビデオバッファを満たしてから再生をスタートする。メディアストリームは一定速度で再生するよう意図されているが、ネットワーク経由でメディアストリームを転送するのに要する時間が変動するので、5秒以上のバッファを維持して、メディアの滑らかな再生を確実にするのが普通である。要求された量がバッファを十分満たすよう蓄積されると、メディアプレーヤは、リクエストされたコンテンツを通常の再生速度で(すなわち、1.0×)再生をスタートする。欠点は、ユーザーは、バッファが一杯になるのに必要な時間待ってから、リクエストしたコンテンツを視聴しなければならない、ということである。この時間は、ストリームをリアルタイムより高速に送信する(例えば、格納装置からのメディアストリーム)アプリケーション内では非常に僅かであるが、受信するメディアストリームが、通常の再生速度(すなわち、1.0×)の場合には目立つ。このような場合、5秒間バッファを満たすのに5秒要する(ネットワーク通信問題がないと仮定する)。この遅延は、ストリーミングメディアの用途によっては許容できるが、視聴者がチャンネルを変更しているパーソナルメディア放送局のように、メディアストリームが変化している場合には、耐えられないものとなる。このような場合、ユーザーは、チャンネルを(従って、メディアストリームを)変更するたびに、バッファが再充填されるのを待たなければならない。
TVを視聴するのに最も用いられるフィーチャの一つは、チャンネル操作であり、ユーザは、このような操作には。実行するのに最高でも1秒しか掛からないことを期待している。しかし、IPネットワーク経由のストリーミングビデオは、サーバとクライアントとの間に、いくらかの遅延が追加される時に最高性能を発揮する。この遅延は、メディアプレーヤークライアント内のA/Vバッファを満たすのに必要である。ユーザの相互作用のための少ない遅延と、滑らかなオーディオビデオディスプレイの二つの要件は、相反する性質である。これらの二つの要件に対応するために、本発明の一実施の形態では、二つのモード、すなわち、ノーマルモード、およびコントロールモード、を導入する。
一実施の形態では、パーソナル放送局がリアルタイムで符号化し、メディアプレーヤ上に表示されるライブストリームを視聴しているユーザーは、たった今視聴したコンテンツの最後の数秒または数分をリプレイでき、または近い将来のある時点で再開するためにライブストリームを一時停止できる。パーソナル放送局は、アナログ入力信号を受信し、処理し;それをデジタル形式に変換し;MPEG4、H.264、Windows Media Video Series9、または別の適切なフォーマット等の、圧縮アルゴリズムでビデオを符号化し;次いで、符号化したストリームをTCP/IP(またはUDP、RTP、RTSP等の代替プロトコル)経由でメディアプレーヤへストリーミングする。
本発明の実施の形態により、人々は、ビデオクリップを友人、知人に送信できる。一実施の形態によれば、メディアプレーヤ装置は、受信したビデオおよびオーディオの最後の5分間(または他の指定時間)のキャプチャ、キャッシュを継続する。メディアプレーヤはキャッシュストリームが5分間(または他の指定時間)に到達すると録画した最も古いコンテンツを自動的に破棄するので、キャッシュされている5分間は、ストリーミングしたメディアの常に最新の5分間となる。
ユーザーは、携帯装置上のビデオ体験に慣れてきているし、携帯格納ソリューション(例えば、リムーバブルフラッシュメディア、および小型ハードディスクドライブ)は更にロバスト、かつ安価になるので、個人用ビデオレコーダの機能をこれらの装置に追加したいという要望が浮上している。本発明の一実施の形態は、個人用ビデオレコーダの機能を、携帯電話、コミュニケータ、PDA、または広域ネットワークもしくはユーザーのローカルエリアネットワークの外側にある他のリモートネットワーク、に接続する他の装置に追加する。
本発明の一実施の形態は、クライアントが、ユーザにウェブページを提示する、ニュース付きスクロールテキストを提示する、またはユーザが現在視聴しているコンテンツに基づいて変化する他の情報を提示する、という能力を提供する。例えば、ユーザが現在、サンフランシスコジャイアンツの野球試合を見ている場合、そのリーグの他の野球の得点を詳細に報じる「ニュースティッカー」、または、ことによるとサンフランシスコジャイアンツについての統計値、およびデータがあるウェブページをユーザに提示できる。コンテンツは、クライアントアプリケーション自体のインターフェースに組み込むことができるし、またはウェブブラウザ等の別のアプリケーションの起動により提示してもよい。同様に、コンテンツ、およびコンテクスト特有の広告をユーザに提示できる。同じ野球試合のコンテクストにおける実施例は、今後の試合の切符を購入するよう視聴者に呼びかけたいサンフランシスコジャイアンツの切符売り場からの広告であろう。
ブロック型ビデオコーダに関わる低ビットレート符号化は、強いブロックノイズを発生する。これらの深刻なノイズを軽減するために、本発明の一実施の形態では、前置フィルタを利用して圧縮前の画像コンテンツを単純化する。前置フィルタは、ローパスフィルタを備えることが多いが、これはブロックノイズを滑らかにするだけでなく、好ましくない画像細部の低下を招く。更に、ローパスフィルタはビデオコンテンツには適応せず、知覚的なビデオ符号化には適さない。従前の前置フィルタの制約を回避するために、メディアプレーヤの一実施の形態では、メディア放送局から受信したメディアストリームに、コンテンツ特有のエッジの推定アルゴリズムを実行する。本実施の形態によれば、エッジ推定により、保存すべき画像細部の配置が得られ、一方、動き推定により、コンテンツの動きが、速いか、中間か、または遅いかの分類が得られる。
ほとんどの低ビットレートビデオソフトウエア符号器は、速い動きの時によく、動的にビデオフレームを落として、何らかの特定の目標ビットレートを満たす。このフレーム落ちがあると、ぎくしゃくしたビデオになることがあり、品質レベルが変動する。フレームの大部分が落される可能性があるので、動き推定処理は効果がなくなってしまう。この問題を回避するために、メディア放送局の一実施の形態では、フレームレートと、各レベルでの品質との両方を維持することにより、ユーザの視聴体験を強化するよう設計したマルチレベルの手法を用いてフレームレートを調整する。
リアルタイムのビデオストリーミング環境では、ネットワーク特性は動的に変化する。ネットワークリソースの利用法を改良するには、ビデオ符号器が、これらのネットワークの変化に適応できなければならない。しかし、ほとんどの標準的なビデオ符号器は、このような適応性をサポートしていない。本発明の一実施の形態では、ストリーミング中にパラメータを動的に変化させることができるWindowsのMedia Video(WMV9)符号器のための仕組みを提供する。
パーソナル放送局は、使用しているA/Vソース装置のアナログ出力を、デジタル化、符号化、およびストリーミングするので、クライアントは、A/Vソース装置の全てのインターフェースをユーザに提示する。クライアントが提供するA/Vソース装置のナビゲーションメニューをナビゲートするための既定の枠組みは、従来のやり方でユーザがA/Vソース装置を眺めているのと全く同一である。すなわち、ナビゲーションのモードは、キー部品として、「上」、「下」、「右」、「左」、および「選択」を伴うのが普通である。しかしながら、メニュー、および他のリストとの相互作用の代替法も可能である。例えば、現在ハイライトされている項目から下に4つ離れている項目をハイライトするために「下」コマンドを4回押下する代わりに、メディアプレーヤの実施の形態により、ユーザは所望のメニュー項目を直接ポイントして、クリックするだけでよい。これは、相互作用を速くするとともに、多くの計算装置で利用できるがテレビには一般に使われない豊かなヒューマンインターフェースツール(例えば、キーボード、およびマウス)を活用する。
本発明の一実施の形態では、メディアプレーヤには、クライアント装置に格納され、クライアントがネットワークに接続していない場合、アクセス可能なホットスポット(公衆の場所で利用できる無線ブロードバンドネットワーク)のディレクトリが含まれる。このようなディレクトリにより、ユーザは、パーソナルメディア放送局へのアクセスができる場所を容易に見付けることができる。
ネットワークアドレス変換(NAT)を含むホームインターネットゲートウエイを有するユーザの場合、ユーザがリモートネットワークからパーソナル放送局にアクセスできるよう何らかの構成が要求されることがある。これは、入ってくるパケットを転送する方法をNATに明示的に指示しない限り、入ってくるリクエストが、多くのNATにより拒否されるからである。この問題を解決する多くの方法があり、幾つかのものは他のものより望ましく、かつ自動的である。本発明の幾つかの実施の形態には、可能性のある解決策を決定し、かつ実装するための多数ステップの処理が含まれる。
本発明の一変形は、クライアント上にローカルに常駐する電子番組ガイド(EPG)を特徴とする。EPGは、パーソナル放送局の最初の構成時に構成する。ユーザは、郵便番号、およびユーザが申し込むサービス、およびパッケージを要求される。この情報に基づいて、クライアントアプリケーションは、次の数日間を含むEPGをダウンロードする。EPGは、中央サーバ、またはサードパーティのプロバイダからの別のサーバから時々ダウンロードして更新する。EPGはクライアント上にローカルに格納できる。
メディアプレーヤーの一実施の形態は、「仲間リスト」を組み込む。仲間リストを用いて、ユーザは、異なる場所にあるパーソナル放送局に接続できる。例えば、チャーリーがエイミーを「仲間」と宣言すると、チャーリーのパーソナル放送局が、エイミーの仲間リストに現れる。チャーリーのパーソナル放送局を選択することにより、エイミーはチャーリーの装置に接続する。必要な設定は全て(例えば、IPアドレス、ポート番号、パスワード、および何らかの他の必要な設定)、仲間に自動的に提供される。
本発明の別の実施の形態により、単一のクライアントだけが、任意の所与の時間にパーソナル放送局に接続できる。放送局は幾つかの優先度の仕組みを実装でき、その一つは、最後に来たものを最後に扱う、である。この仕組みでは、クライアントAが接続され、クライアントBが接続を試みている場合、優先度はクライアントBに与えられる。一実施の形態は、クライアントがこれから接続を外されることをクライアントAのユーザに通知するメッセージを、クライアントAに提供できる。クライアントAのユーザには、この規則をオーバーライドして、接続したままとする機会が提供してもよい。この優先システムは、人が自宅でログインしてから、接続を外さずに外出し、リモートクライアントからログインを試みる場合に、特に有用である。
既知の様々なセキュリティメカニズムを、本発明の異なる実施の形態で用いることができる。本明細書で説明したパーソナルメディア放送システムで用いることができるセキュリティメカニズムの実施例には、パスワード保護、安全なリンク経由の通信、リモートネットワーク経由で送信するコンテンツの暗号化を含むが、これらに限定されない。
別の実施の形態では、メディア放送局には、入力全てに対するA/V通過点が含まれ、そこには、入力それぞれに対応する出力がある。これにより、ユーザは一台のA/Vソース装置の多数の出力を使用しないで済み、2つのセッションを完全に防止する方法を提供できる。更に本実施の形態を用いて、パーソナル放送局へのクライアント接続と、パーソナル放送局にプラグを挿してA/Vソースをローカルで視聴するのとが、同時に起きることを禁止できる。例えば、誰かが自宅でペイパービューの映画を見ていて、パーソナル放送局に接続したユーザがその同じ映画を選択した場合、パーソナル放送局はそのA/V出力を無効にできる。A/V出力を無効にできるかどうかは、コンテンツに依存させることができる。例えば、一実施の形態では、ペイパービューコンテンツだけを遮断して、普通の番組は遮断しない。この区別の仕組みは、上記説明の、EPGと統合できる。
本発明の実施の形態の上記説明は、説明を目的として提示した。すなわち、開示した形そのままに本発明を完結させたり、制限したりする意図はない。当該技術に習熟する者には言うまでもなく、上記教示から多くの修正および改変が可能である。従って、意図していることは、本発明の範囲は、この詳細な説明により制限されるのではなく、本明細書に付帯の請求項により制限されるということである。
Claims (14)
- ネットワーク経由で受信するメディアストリームを再生するための方法であって、
リアルタイムでメディアストリームを受信するステップと、
前記メディアストリームをバッファに格納するステップと、
前記バッファが所定のスレッショールドまで満たされるのを待たずに、減速した再生速度で、前記受信したメディアストリームを前記バッファから再生するステップであって、それにより、前記バッファは、前記メディアストリームが受信されるより遅いレートで満たされるステップと、
を備える方法。 - 前記減速した再生速度が、通常再生速度の約85%である請求項1の方法。
- 前記バッファが所定のスレッショールドまで満たされると、前記受信したメディアストリームを通常の再生速度で再生するステップ、
を更に備える請求項1の方法。 - 前記再生速度を増加させる際、ピッチレベルを維持しながら前記メディアストリームのオーディオ部分を時間伸長するステップ、
を更に備える請求項3の方法。 - 前記メディアストリームのコンテンツを操作するユーザーコマンドを受け取るステップと、
前記ユーザーコマンド受け取りに応答して、前記バッファを消去するとともに、前記受信したメディアストリームを再生するステップと、
を更に備える請求項1の方法。 - 前記ユーザーコマンド受け取りに応答して、前記メディアストリームのビットレートを低下させるステップ、
を更に備える請求項5の方法。 - 前記バッファを消去した後、前記バッファがデータを蓄積できるよう前記メディアストリームの再生速度を低下させるステップ、
を更に備える請求項5の方法。 - 前記受信するステップでは前記メディアストリームをパーソナルメディア放送局から受信することを特徴とする請求項1の方法。
- ネットワーク経由で受信するメディアストリームを再生するための方法であって、
メディアストリームを受信するステップと、
前記メディアストリームをバッファに格納するステップと、
前記メディアストリームを前記バッファから再生するステップと、
前記メディアストリームのコンテンツを操作するユーザーコマンドを受け取るステップと、
前記ユーザーコマンド受け取りに応答して、前記バッファを消去するとともに、前記受信したメディアストリームを再生するコントロールモードに入るステップと、
を備える方法。 - 前記ユーザーコマンドは、前記メディアストリーム内で表示されるメニューをナビゲーションするためである請求項9の方法。
- 前記ユーザーコマンドは、前記メディアストリームと関係付けられるチャンネルを変更するためである請求項9の方法。
- 前記バッファが消去されると、前記メディアストリームのビットレートを低下させるステップ、
を更に備える請求項9の方法。 - 前記受信するステップでは前記メディアストリームをパーソナルメディア放送局から受信することを特徴とする請求項9の方法。
- 請求項1乃至13のいずれかに記載の方法における前記各ステップをコンピュータに実行させるためのコンピュータプログラムコードを記憶してなるコンピュータ読み取り可能な記憶媒体。
