図2のデータは、アノードガス流が燃料電池に入る直前に導入する空気の濃度を増加させて、アノードガス流に導入したときの電池電圧の変化を示す。実質的にCOまたはCOを含まないが、なお不活性ガスで希釈した、すなわち水素75%および不活性窒素25%(H/N:75%/25%)の基準燃料の性能と、基準燃料に加えて二酸化炭素25%および一酸化炭素40ppm を含む(H/N/CO/CO:70%/5%/25%/40ppm )改質燃料の性能とを示す。従来技術の電極と比べて、COおよびCOを含む改質燃料混合物の動作は、空気導入率が増加するにつれて、二層電極を含む電池から得られる電池電圧が、実質的にCOおよびCOを含まない基準燃料で得られる電池電圧に、一層速かに接近する。空気導入率1%において、二層電極は、H/Nで得られる電池電圧より105mV低いに過ぎないが、従来技術の電極は、基準電池電圧より245mVも低い。
図3のデータは、すべての3種類のMEAについて、電池電圧の変化を動作時間の関数として示す。実質的にCOまたはCOを含まない純粋な水素燃料についての性能と、COおよびCOを含む(H/N/CO/CO:70%/5%/25%/40ppm )改質ガスについての性能とを示す。空気を一定の導入率3%としてアノード室に導入して、「二層1」および「二層2」についてこの水準を維持したが、従来の「単層」においては、空気導入率を3%から4%,5%、最後に7%にまで周期的に増加させて、受容可能な性能を維持した。COおよびCOを共に含む改質ガスによって動作させたときは、経過時間に伴なう電池電圧の低下は、一定の空気導入率で水素によって動作させた場合と同様であった。これに対して、従来技術の電極では、経過時間に伴なう電池電圧の低下を同様に維持するためには、空気導入水準を周期的に増加させることが必要であった。実際に、この試験の終りに、従来技術の電極は、空気導入率を7%の水準として動作させたが、遙かに低い3%の空気導入水準で二層電極を動作させた場合と比べて、電池電圧は遙かに劣った。
