A fuel cell has a hydrogen electrode formed by a non-porous palladium or palladium alloy membrane coated on the hydrogen side with palladium black and on the electrolyte side with a mixed black of palladium and platinum. The palladium alloys of the mixtures are those having not more than 0À6 atomic per cent of Cu, Au, Ag per Pd atom.
