A fuel cell electrode uses as a catalyst a material containing beryllium oxide and one or both of cobalt and nickel. Copper or a platinum metal may also be present and up to 50% of the oxide may be substituted by an oxide or hydroxide of a rare earth metal or an alkaline earth metal.
