Abstract
【解決手段】 少なくとも基板2、非磁性金属元素からなる下地層3と、情報を磁気的に記録するための非晶質磁性体からなる非晶質磁性層4とを備える磁気記録媒体1において、非晶質磁性層4表面または磁気記録媒体1表面(潤滑層6表面)に、凹凸の密度が400個/μm2以上、あるいは凹凸の高さが非晶質磁性層4の平均層厚の2%以上となるように凹凸形状を形成する。これにより、非晶質磁性層4の磁壁移動が効果的に抑制され、その結果、微小な記録ビットを安定して形成できる。また、磁気記録媒体1に対し、非晶質磁性層4を局所的に加熱すると共に、加熱された領域の少なくとも一部に磁界を印加する磁気記録装置で情報を記録する。これにより、高密度記録を行うことができる。

Description
以下に、実施の1例である磁気記録媒体の作製方法を説明する。
比較のため、従来の構造である、下地層3を備えていない磁気記録媒体を作製した。下地層3を備えていない磁気記録媒体の作製方法は、磁気記録媒体表面の凹凸の効果を正確に評価するために、実施例1において、下地層3としてのAl下地層を成膜する工程を省く以外は全く同一の作製方法とした。したがって、本比較例の磁気記録媒体は、Al下地層を設けていない点以外は実施例1の磁気記録媒体と同様の構成を備えている。
比較のため、下地層3として、Al膜以外の凹凸を備える下地層を設けた磁気記録媒体を作製した。このとき、下地層3としては、Ag膜を使用した。このような磁気記録媒体の作製方法は、下地層の材質の違いによる効果を正確に評価するため、実施例1において、下地層3としてのAl下地層を成膜する工程をAg膜を成膜する工程とする以外は全く同一とした。なお、Ag膜の平均膜厚は、2.5nmとした。したがって、本比較例の磁気記録媒体は、下地層3としての平均膜厚3.7nmのAl下地膜の代わりに、平均膜厚2.5nmのAg膜を有する以外は、全く同様の構成を備えている。
次に、実施例1、比較例1、比較例2の磁気記録媒体の磁性層の表面観察像を、その法線方向から原子間力顕微鏡(AFM)により観察した。実施例1、比較例1、比較例2の顕微鏡写真をそれぞれ図3、図4、および図5に示す。
次に、実施例1および比較例1で作製した磁気記録媒体の表面形状を原子間力顕微鏡(AFM)により観察した。
次に、実施例1で作製した磁気記録媒体、比較例1で作製した磁気記録媒体に対し、評価用の熱アシスト磁気記録再生装置を用いて、実際に情報の記録再生を行った。特に高密度記録の目安となる記録周波数特性の関係を詳細に調べた。また、形成された記録ビットの形状を、磁気力顕微鏡(MFM)により観察した。
熱アシストを行わず、室温で記録および再生を行う通常の磁気記録再生方式においても非晶質磁性層表面の凹凸の効果を確かめるため、次の試料を作製した。
〔実施例6〕
上記実施例1〜5および比較例2では、下地層材料の違いにより磁性層表面形状や記録密度に差が生じた。以下に、その理由を図12および図13を用いて説明する。
