以下、本発明の実施の形態について図面を参照して詳細に説明する。
［第１の実施の形態］
図１は本発明の第１の実施の形態に係る薄膜磁気ヘッドの構成を示す断面図である。なお、図１は媒体対向面および基板の面に垂直な断面を示している。また、図１において記号Ｔで示す矢印は、記録媒体の進行方向を表している。図２は図１に示した薄膜磁気ヘッドの要部を示す斜視図である。図３は図２における磁極部分の近傍を拡大して示す斜視図である。図４は図１に示した薄膜磁気ヘッドの媒体対向面の一部を示す正面図である。図５は図４における磁極部分層および非磁性層を拡大して示す正面図である。

また、本実施の形態に係る薄膜磁気ヘッドの製造方法によれば、磁極部分層１４Ａの外形を決定するためのエッチングにおいて使用されるマスク１６Ｍを磁性材料によって形成したので、ドライエッチングに対する耐性に優れたマスク１６Ｍを形成することが可能になる。これにより、磁極部分層１４Ａを構成する材料がドライエッチングに対する耐性に優れている場合でも、マスク１６Ｍを用いたドライエッチングによって磁極部分層１４Ａの外形を決定することが可能になる。また、本実施の形態によれば、マスク１６Ｍのうちのエッチング後に残った部分を第３の磁性層１６とすることができる。このようにして第３の磁性層１６を設けることにより、上述のように、記録媒体におけるビットパターン形状の歪みを抑えて、線記録密度を向上させることが可能になる。
