Abstract

966,142. Container cap locks. SPRA-LOK CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1960 [Nov. 6, 1959], No. 36232/60. Heading B8T. [Also in Division E2] A container cap locking assembly comprises a split ring 13, Fig. 3, with one or more flanges 31, 33 projecting inwardly and arranged to retain the cap 12 on the container 11, in which the flanges are so resilient that the cap can be pressed axially on to the container to secure the cap to the container until the split is opened up to permit release of the cap and thereafter resume a locking position. The split ring 13 is made of polystyrene and has out-turned lugs 28, 29, Fig. 4, projecting from either side of the split 30. The lower flange 31 of the ring is adapted to fit under and be retained by the shoulder 23 of the valve cup 19 on the container, and the upper flange 33 retains the out-turned bead 25 of the cap 12. The resiliency of the ring 13 permits the snapping into position of the said parts. The flanges have bevels at 34, 35, respectively, to act as guides for easy assembly. Unauthorized opening of the ring 13 is prevented by heat-sealing or tying together the lugs 28, 29 which may be made to interlock as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The cap 12 may be attached to an over cap 51, as shown in Fig. 9, with an opening 56 which allows access to the lugs 28, 29 which are not interlocked in this embodiment but have bevelled mating surfaces 58. The opening 56 is formed by turning a pair of tangs 57 which straddle the lugs but allow them to be spread to unseat the ring 13, and is covered by a puncturable seal 59. The lug 28 has a slot 60 engaging the tang 57 to prevent relative movement of the cap and ring. When only an outer cap 71 is provided as in Fig. 14 a modified lockring 75, Fig. 15, abutts the inturned rim 73 of the cap and the skirt 22 of the valve cup 19, and is held in place by tangs 86 in the side wall 72 of the cap. The lower ring 83 of the ring 75 may be omitted. The flange which fits beneath the skirt 22 of the valve cup 19 may be eccentric, or relieved adjacent to the split in any one of the embodiments to facilitate removal of the ring.
