I. T. SMITH. CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED MN. I. 1919. 1,316,515.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
A TTOR/VEYS THE cOLl/MIM PLANOGRAPH c0, WASHINGTON, D. C,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRVING r." fsM I'rH, or BROOKLYN, EW YORK.
CONTAINER.
To all whom it may concern: a
- Beit known that I, IRVING T.. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of -Kings and State of New York-,haveinvented a new and Improved Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in View are: to compel a person opening a bottle to pay particular attention to the bottle; to seal a bottle in such manner as to prevent the unintentional opening ofthe same; and to arrange the cover so that it may be-locked in various positions.
- Dra wings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing an upper fragment of a bottle having a cap therefor locked in service. relation thereto;
Fig. 2 is a similar viewshowing the looking device-in its inoperative position;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Dscm'ption,
The bottle andcap therefor shown in the drawings are designed with special reference to the trade'in dangerous or poisonous ingredients. h/Iany expedients have arisen owing tothe fact that certain persons have been led to make a mistake as to the contents of a bottle containing drugs. Mostof the mistakes have occurred during the partially weakened or not fully aroused condi tion of the person seeking relief by means of a' medicament andusing instead" thereof a poisonous drug. Many devices have'been designed to avoid this error. As a rule the previous devices have aimed to disclose the dangerous nature of the drug by glving to the container of said drug a special construction. These expedients have, however, wholly or partially failed of the desired result, owing to the fact that the person seeking the drug is somewhat befuddled with sleep or pain.
In the present invention, the accidental misuse referred to is avoided by locking the cap 8 on the neck of the bottle 9 in such manner as to necessitate a search or alert act on the part of the person desiring to open the bottle.
The search referred to has for its object I Specification of Letters Eatent. Patented Sept, 16, 1919, Application filed .Ianuary'7, 1919. Serial No. 270,040.
the finding of a pin 10 or other suitable sharp. pointed instrument with which to penetrate the rubber insert 11. The insert 11 is disposed centrally on the upper exposed portion of the cap 9 and in the upper wall thereof.
- The cap 8is hollow having an inner and an outer wall. The inner wall is pressed to form a screw-threaded section 12. The section 12 is shaped to fit a thread which is" formed onthe bottle neck 13. The thread on the neck 13 is preferably pressed therein. At intervals circumferentially related there are pressed in the bottle neck vertical grooves or slots 14. The slots 14 are provided toengage the head 15 of a latch 16.
The latch 16 is pivotedby a pin 17 and is It will be understood that normally the I pin 10 is removed from the insert 11, the ob ect bemg to necessitate the person desiring to remove the cover 8, to search for a pin with which to depress the extension 19.
This search demands the attention of the person and serves to awaken his dormant faculties. i
- Having found a pin, the operation of re moving the cover consists in forcing the pin through the insert 11 upon the extension 19 of the latch 16. The latch is thereby rocked on the "pin 17 until the head 15 is withdrawn from the slot 14 with which it has been engaged. The insert 11 now serves to hold the latch 16 in the released position while the cover is retractively turned to disengage the threads thereof from the threads on the neck 13.
WVhen the cover 8 is placed on the bottle 9, if the pin has been withdrawn, a sharppointecl instrument or pin is first pushed through the insert 11 todepress the extension 19 for moving the head 15 to the disengaged position thereof. The cover is now placed upon the bottle by securing the same .upon the neck.
When the cover is so placed, the sharppointed instrument is removed to allow the spring 18 to force the head 15 into one of the slots 14:, when the cover is moved to a position where the head 15 alines with one of the slots.
Claims.
- 1. The combination of a container having a neck portion; a cap cover therefor pro vided with flanges enfolding said neck portion; a latch pivotally mounted in said cover for engaging said neck portion for preventing the removal of said cover; and means mounted on said cover for preventing the passage therethrough to said latch of a dull instrument; said means being puncturable by a sharp instrument to efiect engagement with the latch.
2. The combination of a container having a neck portion; a C21 cover therefor provided with flanges enfolding said neck portion; a latch pivotally mounted in said cover for engaging said neck portion for preventing the removal of said cover; and puncturable means mounted on said cover for permitting the insertion therethrough of a pointed instrument for disengaging said latch from said neck portion.
3. I11 combination, a container having a neck provided with a screw-thread and shoulders formed in said neck adjacent said thread; of a cover for said container having a threaded portion for engaging the threads on said neck; a latch member movably mounted on said cover at the interior thereof; and an insert mounted in said cover adjacent said latch, said insert being constructed from resilient compressible material adapted for permitting the insertion therethrough of a pointed instrument for disengaging said latch from said neck; and the resiliency of the insert serving to grip the said inserted instrument to hold the latch disengaged.
4:. In combination, a container having a neck provided with a screw-thread and shoulders formed in said neck adjacent said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
screw-thread, of a cover for said container having integral inner and outer walls of which the inner wall has a threaded portion engaging the threads of said neck, a latch member pivotally mounted on said cover between the walls thereof and adapted to be projected through the inner wall to lock with said neck; and a puncturable insert in the outer wall of said cap at the top and adjacent to said latch, adapted for permitting the insertion therethrough of a pointed instrument for disengaging said latch from said neck;
5. In combination, a vitreous container having a neck portion externally threaded with shoulders extending transverse the thread thereof; a screw-threaded cover, the walls thereof being separated to form a hollow chamber; a rocking latch pivotally mounted in said chamber to extend through the inner wall thereof for engaging said shoulders, said latch having an extension at the free end thereof adapted to rest adjacent the center of the upper walTof said cover; and a rubber insert disposed at the center of said upper wall of said cover.
6. In combination, a container having a neck provided with screw-threads and with vertical slots extending across said threads, a cap therefor having spaced inner and outer cup-shaped walls, the inner wall being threaded to engage the threads of said neck, a rockable latch mounted between the inner and outer walls of the cap and presenting an operating arm extending laterally at the top of the cap between the walls thereof, the outer wall of said cap at the top being puncturable to permit insertion therethrough of an instrument for engaging said arm of the latch to rock the latter, said inner wall having a lateral opening for said latch and said latch when in register with a slot of the neck being engageable therewith at any point along the slot according to the position of the cap on the neck. c c .7
