Abstract

954,903. Charging I.C. engines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 25, 1960 [May 25, 1959], No. 17724/59. Heading F1B. In an I.C. engine wherein scavenging air is introduced into one end of the engine cylinder with a rotational component of velocity, the scavenging air is hindered from flowing through the exhaust ports 24, Fig. 1 by means 8, forming a diaphragm placed adjacent the periphery and the burnt gases are moved centrally through the cylinder towards the exhaust ports. Inclined and tangential scavenging air ports 2 cause the air to enclose the burnt gases in zone 17 which is displaced outwardly through the centre of the ring of plates 8, Fig. 3. Valves 3 are fixed rotationally e.g. by Keys or by the cylinder wall and opened by movement of ring plate 13. In a modification, the outer parts 19, Fig. 5 of two-part valves 3 are rotated by an internally-toothed wheel 36 meshing with spring plate 35 and the plates 8 have radially-directed slots. In a further embodiment, the burnt gases pass centrally through an annular diaphragm mounted resiliently on the piston head and then outwardly through ports uncovered by the piston at B.D.C., the scavenging air entering through valve-controlled cylinder head ports. Figure 7. Scavenging air is admitted through non-return valves 4 and ports 2 to displace the burnt gases through a liquid-cooled diaphragm 51 integral with thepi ston 20. The spray from fuel injector 38 substantially avoids the diaphragm 51 during its upward travel. In another embodiment opposed pistons are arranged in a single cylinder so that an integral projection on one piston enters an annular diaphragm integral with the other piston. Figure 13. Scavenging air is admitted from two rows of ports 2, 21, the lower row 21 having a larger inclination so that the air jets emerging therefrom prevent the main mass of scavenging air from flowing out with the exhaust gases and in a modification the two rows of scavenging ports are arranged at opposite ends of the cylinder of an opposed piston engine.
