An inlet passage, particularly for a compression ignition engine, is divided by a flow-dividing wall 18 into two passageways 20, 22, leading to different inlet ports 12, 14 associated with the same cylinder and arranged tangentially to the cylinder to induce swirl therein. The dividing wall 18 extends from the parts 12, 14, almost up to the entry opening 16 to the inlet passages.
