Abstract

[Also in Division B5] An insole member 1, Fig. 1, moulded from a thermo-plastic resin (see Division B5), e.g. cellulose acetate, has a reinforcement member 8 of open framework construction embedded in its waist portion 4. Member 8, formed by bending a single strip of spring steel, comprises upper and lower leaf portions separated by a corrugated portion and is flexible about a transverse axis until the insole material hardens. The surface of the reinforcement component may be phosphate-coated, shot-blasted or perforated to improve adhesion between the resin and the metal and may be coated with adhesive before moulding. An insole blank B, Fig. 7, containing member 8, is first formed by injection moulding. The blank B is then warmed until mouldable and conformed to the shape of a last with which the insole is to be used. A toe portion, e.g. of leather, is stuck on to a chamfered end portion 6 of the insole. An insole blank for very high-heeled shoes may be formed in a suitably shaped mould to reduce the degree of moulding required on the last. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a modified reinforcing member. Other insole materials are high-impact polystyrene, P.V.C., polythene and nylon.
