Class 17(2) A shank and heel unit 12 is moulded in plastic or other light weight material and is provided with a metal reinforcing stay 44 embedded in heel-supporting portion 22, shank 20 and heel tread 24 and passing therethrough. The unit is placed between the insole and outsole. In a modification, the tension surface T only is reinforced by a metal wire mesh strip located in a groove. The colour of the moulded portion may contrast with the toe and heel portions of the shoe.
