Abstract

808,333. Boots &o. LUDWIG, H. June 6, 1957 [July 19, 1956], No. 18010/57. Class 17(2). A method of vulcanizing a rubber sole on to a welted upper comprises, in the force lasted construction shown, attaching together an insole 3, an upper 2 and a welt strip 4 by a seam 5 and inserting a heated last 1. The welt 4 is forced against the mould sealing edge 10 and a sole 8 is vulcanized to the assembly. If desired holes 12 are provided in the part of the welt enclosed by the sole to improve the bond. After vulcanization the edge 13 of the sole is finished, roughened and coated with adhesive and the free edge of the welt is stuck down. The invention may be applied to other shoe constructions such as where the upper is locked or cemented to an insole and a welt strip is tacked in position but in every case the sealing of the mould takes place against a welt strip thus preventing marking of the upper.
