In making ballet shoes wherein the toe part of the upper extends in pleats to meet the sole, both sides of the margin of the upper are coated with adhesive, such as rubber solution, so that the pleats can be stuck in position without the use of tacks. As shown, in making a ballet shoe on the turn shoe process an outsole 25 is tacked in position to a last and solutioned, and an upper 12, in three parts, with a lining 13, in two parts joined by central seams 17, is placed over the last. The upper 12 extends beyond the lining at the toe and the whole of its inner face and the margin of its outer face has adhesive applied. The heel and side parts of the upper are lasted and stuck to the sole and the centre of the toe is then likewise stuck to the sole, after which the pleats 29 are formed and stuck in position by the adhesive on both sides of the upper. A lining piece 30 is stuck over the toe part at least and the shoe is completed by the usual turn process. In a modification, the invention is applied to a normal cement lasting process in which an insole is used and the upper is lasted right side out.
