Abstract
1,059,203. Boots &c. BETTS & BROUGHTON Ltd. Dec. 10, 1965 [Jan. 2, 1965], No. 192/65. Heading A3B. An article of safety footwear has a sole 1 of moulded synthetic resin and a seamless moulded outer cap 2 integral with the sole 1 and covering a metal toe cap 3. The metal toe cap 3 is placed over the toe end of a lasted upper 7 or, if the upper is lined, the toe portion of the upper is removed and the metal toe cap 3 is placed over the lining. The toe cap 3 has a flange 4 which underlies the edge of the insole and a reinforcing member 9 of fibre board may be positioned beneath the toe cap 3. When the toe cap 3 has been secured in position, e.g. by adhesive, and the outer surfaces of the toe cap 3 and upper 7 have been roughened, the assembly is placed in an injection moulding machine where the sole 1 and outer toe cap 2, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, are moulded on to the shoe. A tread layer 10 of softer material than the sole 1 may be moulded on to the shoe in a second injection moulding stage and the layer 10, which may contrast in colour with the sole 1, is surrounded by a wall 11 of the harder material of the sole 1 in the toe region.
