Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). An apparatus for absorbing voltage surges caused by an A.C. fluctuating load such as an arc furnace, comprises a transformer 4, 5, and a saturable reactor coupled to the load so that a voltage surge saturates the reactor, the current flow in which prevents a corresponding surge on the main supply 2. In Fig. 1, the reactor 7 is connected to the load through tapped inductors 6. A number of other arrangements are described in the Specification.
