Polyhase electric are furnace apparatus comprises devices 1, 2, 3 operative to raise or lower the furnace electrodes R, S, T respectively with respect to the hearth N of the furnace, the devices 1, 2, 3 each being fed with a current proportional to the current flowing to the electrode R, S, T and a current proportional to a voltage U 2 derived by a function generator 4, the voltage U 2 being any desired function of the polyphase supply voltage U 1 such that, for example, the arc current may be maintained constant, the power consumed by the arc maintained constant at the impedance of the arc maintained constant. The function generator 4 may comprise the elements shown in Fig. 2 as delta connected non-linear saturable reactors 6, 7, 8 and series resistors 9, 10, 11. Alternatively the reactors may be replaced by Zener diodes and in a further embodiment an autotransformer is associated with each non-linear element together with three further resistors.
