Abstract

1284636 Control systems for D.C. arc welding apparatus TOA SEIKI K K 13 July 1970 [26 July 1969 13 Aug 1969 29 Dec 1969] 33866/70 Heading H2H A direct current arc welding apparatus supplied from a single phase A.C. source by way of a rectifier device is provided with a capacitor which is charged when the output voltage of the rectifier device is relatively high and which discharges into the arc when the output voltage of the rectifier device is comparatively low, thus preventing extinction of the arc when the output voltage of the rectifier device drops to zero. A D.C. arc welding apparatus of the type having a consumable electrode continuously fed towards a workpiece is connected across the output terminals V 3 of a rectifier bridge 14 comprising a pair of diodes and a pair of thyristors 14a, 14b. A capacitor 18 in series with a saturable reactor 17, the saturation of which is set by a potentiometer 47 in a control unit 24 to control the charging rate of the capacitor 18. Thus the capacitor 18 receives a charge during the unsmoothed output half-cycles of the rectifier bridge 14 until the voltage value of the half cycle drops below the voltage to which the capacitor 18 has become charged. The capacitor thereupon discharges into the arc formed between the electrode and workpiece, the change in direction of the current in the working winding of the saturable reactor 17 altering the effect of the reactor compared with that during the capacitor charging phase. Thus, the capacitor energy maintains the arc during the periods in which the output voltage of the rectifier bridge 14 is below the arc voltage. The A.C. input voltage is regulated by a device 13 comprising an auto-transformer and the waveform of the output of the rectifier bridge 14 is shaped by a circuit device 23 which controls the firing of the thyristors 14a, 14b so that the waveform is of a trapezoidal form. In other embodiments the rectifier device 14 is a half wave device, the reactor 17 may be a single winding device which is not saturable or the supply from the A.C. source 11 to the transformer 12 may be controlled by a pair of backto-back thyristors.
