Abstract

[Also in Division H5] An electro-erosion apparatus has its erosion current controlled to reduce electrode wear by passing the current through a parallel inductance 5 and resistance 4 in series with the electrode gap 2, 3. The current is switched on by a rectifier 9 controlled by a pulse generator 8. Initially the full voltage of the D.C. source 1 causes a current i 0 to flow whose size is variable and determined by the variable resistance 4. After a short time current flows through the inductance 5 so that the current increases constantly to i 1 . The rate of increase is adjustable by the variable inductance 5. When a rectifier 10 is switched on by the pulse generator the condenser 7 is charged and the current across the gap falls rapidly and the rectifier 9 switches off, the condenser discharges in a time dependent on the inductance 5 and capacitor 7 values and charges a buffer capacitor 6. The cycle is then repeated by switching on the rectifier 9.
