Abstract
1,090,404. Supply systems for welding arcs. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. July 7, 1964 [July 25, 1963; Nov. 28, 1963], Nos. 29547/63 and 47019/63. Heading H2H. In a system for starting a D.C. welding arc by a high-frequency pulse generator 5, 6 a capacitor 8 assists by discharging into the gap when the pulse polarity is the same as that of supply 1. When the polarity is opposite, the pulse is effectively short-circuited through capacitor 8 and rectifier 10, and at the same time the capacitor is charged from supply 1 through non-inductive resistor 9. Ionization is continued by the discharge of a capacitor 4 until the arc current reaches a stable level. Resistor 9 and rectifier 10 may be replaced by several of these components in series, possibly with a capacitor across each pair to improve the voltage distribution. The rectifiers are preferably semi-conductor diodes of the avalanche type.
