Abstract

970,553. Charging and discharging condensers. HILGER & WATTS Ltd. March 1, 1963 [March 2, 1962], No. 8186/62. Heading H2H. An analytical spark gap apparatus comprises a storage device, such as a capacitor C1, chargeable from an alternating current source over a rectifier MR1, the storage device C1 being discharged in an oscillatory manner by means including two asymmetrical switching devices V1, V2 connected in reverse parallel. The energy for the discharge across the analytical gap may be derived from a low voltage supply in which case the capacitor discharge is used to ionize the gap or alternatively the capacitor discharge itself may provide the gap discharge energy. The switching device V1 is of the triggered type such as a thyratron or a controlled semi-conductor rectifier and is triggered by a pulse generator PG whilst the device V2 may be a similar type or alternatively a semi-conductor diode (Fig. 3, not shown).
