Abstract
1350247 Control systems for resistance welding WELTRONIC CO 7 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 31877/71 Heading H2H A resistance welding control system comprises a pair of back-to-back ignitions by means of which a welding load is connected to an alternating current source, means being provided to sense both the power factor of the load and the passage of the welding load current through its zero values, the signals produced by the sensing means being used to control a curve generating means which produces a curve having a preselectable constant characteristic portion and a portion having a selectably variable slope characteristic, the power factor sensing means initiating the generation of the preselectable constant characteristic portion of the curve and the zero crossing sensing means subsequently controlling the generation of the selectably variable slope characteristic portion of the curve, the curve being used to control the points in the half-cycles of the alternating current source such that the current and thus the amount of heat developed in the welding process are controlled. The control system enables a wide latitude in the selection of the firing angles thus allowing the ignitrons to be fired earlier in the half-cycles of the A.C. supply than is normal. Filters are provided to suppress transient conditions in order to improve the operation of the ignitrons and means are provided to prevent the firing of the ignitrons in the first half-cycle of the supply during an operation so as to prevent saturation of the transformers in the system; further means being provided to ensure that the ignitrons operate in a normal lead-trail mode. The control system is arranged for single and repeat operations and may be arranged to control two separate welding apparatus. A decade counting device is provided to time the various parts of a welding operation such as the presqueeze, squeeze, weld, hold and off periods. The control system comprises a plurality of transistors and thyristors. Specifications 1,067,893 and 1,199,429 are referred to.
