A single-phase load 1 such as a resistance welder supplied from a 3-phase source R, S<SP>1</SP>, T<SP>1</SP>, and controlled by a device 6 which is phase or voltage sensitive, has the device connected to the phase or voltage RS<SP>1</SP> least influenced by changes in the load, and the phase change is compensated by a phase-displacing circuit such as a capacitor 3, resistance 4 and transformer 7. The supply to the device 6 is taken from across the resistor 4. The k.v.a. rating of the resistor capacitor combination 3, 4 is made about 10 times that of the device 6. In the Specification, it is stated that the voltage RS<SP>1</SP> changes less than the voltage RT<SP>1</SP>.
