Abstract

935,067. Protective arrangements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 12, 1960 [Feb. 13, 1959], No. 5140/59. Class 38 (5). A monitoring arrangement for a group of electric heating units comprises a sampling circuit connectible sequentially to the units and including means for deriving a signal varying with the voltage applied to a selected one of the units, second means for deriving a second signal varying with the current taken by the selected one of the units and third means for comparing the signals and producing a third signal for the energizing of an indicating, alarm or control circuit. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, heater units HT1 . . . HT3 are star-connected to a three-phase supply SL1 . . . SL3 with the voltage signals derived by means of potential dividers PD1 . . . PD3 and the current signals derived from current transformers CT1 . . . CT3 with associated load resistors R1 . . . R3. The output terminals of the potential dividers and current transformers are connected to continuously driven ganged switches MS1, MS2 so that the current and voltage signals associated with the heating units are compared in repeated succession. A transformer T1 is connected to the switches MS1, MS2 and the output of the transformer is applied through a voltage doubling rectifier circuit VD and time delay circuit TD to the grid of a thyratron ER having a relay RL in its anode circuit. To indicate the interruption of any one of the supply lines, e.g. by the blowing of fuse, tappings are taken from voltage dividers VD1 ... VD3 to a third switch MS3 ganged to the switches MS1 and MS2, the switch MS3 being connected through a full wave rectifier RB to a relay RY. Instead of the thyratron ER, a cold cathode gas-filled triode, a transistor or magnetic amplifier may be used. The relays RL, RY control indicating or alarm circuits (not shown) and the relay RY may serve to stop rotation of the switches in a position which indicates the faulty unit.
