[Also in Division H1] A current stabilizing apparatus for a highly fluctuating load such as an arc furnace fed by a transformer 3, Fig. 2, comprises a series impedance such as a reactor 7 and a shunt impedance such as a saturable reactor 8 and means 9 for increasing the supply voltage to compensate for the series impedance voltage drop. Fig. 7 shows a 3 phase arrangement, having three air gapped limbs 26 carrying the series reactor windings 30a, 30b and three saturating limbs 27 carrying the shunt reactor windings 31a, 31b, the windings being tapped and arranged to provide a voltage boost. Parts of the windings may be commoned to embrace limbs 26 and 27 together. Other 3 phase arrangements are described in the Specification in which the components are connected to give cancellation of the lower harmonics. Specification 932,549 is referred to.
