Abstract

828,073. Converting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 25, 1956 [April 25, 1955 (2)], No. 12688/56. Class 38 (2). Inverse voltage protection for the starting electrodes 20 of ignitrons is provided by connecting a saturable reactor 28, 29 in the circuit of the starting electrodes, each reactor having a biasing winding 30 or 31 supplied from a direct current source so as to completely saturate the reactor, the magnetizing effect of the biasing winding aiding the magnetizing effect of the firing impulses flowing in the main reactor winding 26 or 27 and opposing the magnetizing effect of the inversely directed impulses in the main reactor windings. Thus the firing impulses tend to increase the saturation of the reactor which thereby presents little impedance to the firing impulses whilst the inversely directed impulses tend to desaturate the reactor which in consequence presents a high impedance to the inversely. directed impulses. A phase-shifting circuit 21 and a waveform peaking circuit 22 of normal design is incorporated in the apparatus in order to ensure that the firing point of the ignitrons can be accurately determined Specification 742,877 is referred to.
