In order to reduce the potential across shunt capacitors in a filter for removing A.C. components from a D.C. supply, the capacitors are connected in series with a separate D.C. source. In the simplest embodiment a D.C. source 4 of opposite polarity to the main D.C. source is connected in series with the capacitors 1 which, together with inductors 2, 3, form the filter. The auxiliary voltage may be varied with the main D.C. voltage to provide optimum compensation under all voltage conditions. To this end, the D.C. source 4 may be connected in series with a valve 5 and anode load 9. The anode current is regulated by a control box 6 which may be connected so as to respond to the total main D.C. voltage or to the voltage across the capacitors 1. The control box 6 may embody a filter to prevent interference by harmonics. The valve circuit may be replaced by a transistor circuit.
