[Also in Divisions G3 and H2] Voltage stabilizing apparatus for an A.C. supply system is connected in shunt with the system and comprises an A.C. saturable reactor of a type in which at least some of the low order harmonics are internally balanced, in combination with a series capacitor. As shown, a set of three-phase saturable reactors 101, 102, 103, connected for internal compensation of harmonics, is connected in series with capacitors 112, 113, 114, which compensate for voltage drop across the reactors, and the combination is connected in shunt with the supply system 105. Arc gaps 13, or circuit breakers, protect the series capacitors against switching circuits. A low-impedance by-pass, including capacitors 121, 122, 123, for second order harmonics may be provided, and the apparatus may include a further saturable reactor or a transductor connected across the series capacitor to improve the control action at low main reactor currents (Figs. 1, 3 and 4, not shown). A preferred construction of reactor, in which the windings are interconnected so that the third harmonic fluxes are suppressed and harmonic fluxes of the fifth and seventh orders are cancelled out, is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
