958,775. Semi-conductor switching circuits. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 9, 1960 [June 11, 1959], No. 20036/59. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H2] In a protective relay arrangement having an operating time related to the magnitude of a unidirectional overcurrent or over-voltage operating signal, the timing means comprise a capacitor C3 arranged to be charged by the operating signal through a rectifier S3 connected in the blocking direction with respect to the polarity of the operating signal. The operating characteristic may be modified by a parallel.non-linear resistor NL and a linear resistor R7. For quick resetting, a discharge circuit including a rectifier S2 and resistor R8 and R5 may be provided. A further rectifier S1 and resistor R6 permit near instantaneous operating when the operating signal is very large and a Zener diode S4 protects the relay circuits when the signal is extremely large. The rectifiers S1 and S3 are selenium or copper oxide rectifiers and the rectifier S2 is a silicon or germanium rectifier. The operating signal is derived from transformers T2, T3 having their secondary windings connected in opposition so as to provide no resultant output under normal conditions. The transformer T3 is arranged to saturate at a lower input current than the transformer T2 so that the transformers have a resultant output under overload conditions, the output being rectified by a full-wave rectifier B1. The delayed output from the timing means is applied to a transistorized relay circuit which may be that of Specification 958,774.
