Abstract

887,211. Container closures. WADDING- TON, R. S., and DUVAL, B. Jan. 28, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1957], No. 3287/57. Class 125(3). [Also in Group XVIII] A pouring stopper for a container has a tubular plug 7 of rubber or other elastomeric material formed with flanges 8, 9 which define a groove to receive the neck of the container, the flange 8 being of decreasing diameter over its lower portion and having a maximum peripheral size which is just insufficient to prevent the deformation necessary to insert the plug without deformation of the inner surface thereof, such deformation being prevented by a pouring tube 14 so that when inserted the plug cannot be withdrawn. A rubber valve plate 17 is held seated in the lower end of the tube by a spring 18 compressed between a partition 19 and a button 20 linked with plate 17 by a rod 21. The tube has a liquid delivery port 24 and an air inlet port 25 which are covered by plug 7 when the tube 14 is pushed inwardly. If the container is placed on its side, tube 14 is filled with liquid through ports 26 and when the tube is pulled outwardly a fixed quantity of liquid is discharged from port 24, air entering via port 25. In a modification, Fig. 4, a plug 28 with flanges 29, 30 is closed at one end by a thin diaphragm 32 serving as a transit seal and a flexible pourer tube 33 is provided. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the plug has an inclined tube 39 divided by a septum 40 and initially sealed by a wall 45, a metal reinforcing sleeve 51 being provided.
