Abstract

858,202. Container closures. FENWAL LABORATORIES Inc. Sept. 1, 1958 [June 24, 1958], No. 28063/58. Class 125(3). In a closure arrangement for containers of medical and like fluids a rubber or other elastic stopper 20 has an end wall 21 with access and vent openings 30, 31, the vent passage 31 having a cup shaped projection 33 with its bottom wall defined as a resilient flap by a slit 34 to constitute a negative pressure sensitive valve, and a side wall 22 to embrace the container mouth. End wall 21 has an annular groove 25 normally closed by the rim of the container and side wall 22 has a rib 36 recessed by longitudinal grooves 40 so that during sterilisation excess internal pressure lifts end wall 21 to put the container interior in communication with the external atmosphere via grooves 25, 40. A cup seal 41 and tear seal 42 fit over the neck 27 of the stopper. In a modification, Fig. 9, openings 30, 31 are closed by nipples 46, 47 integral with a diaphragm 44 held in place by a seal 49.
