Class 39(3) [Also in Group XIII] A storage heater comprising a heat storage unit having its base 7 supported upon a heat-insulating base plate 6 mounted on heat-insulating blocks 8 so as to provide an air space between the baseplate 6 and the floor on which the blocks 8 rest, has an outer casing 2 enclosing the unit which is electrically heated, and independently supported on the floor so that air may flow between the interior and exterior of the outer casing around the base plate, over the whole of the side and top surfaces of the heat storage unit and between the exterior and interior of the outer casing adjacent the top thereof. In a convection-heated arrangement, air entering through inlets 12 passes around tubular heating blocks 3 containing powdered aluminium oxide as the heat storage medium, and out through aperture 14 in casing 2 which is controlled by damper 17. The damper is manually controlled and may also be controlled by an electric time switch and solenoid mechanism. A thermostatic control device 19 in the outlet region 16 of the device is used to prevent overcharging when the damper is closed and to prevent the charge being heated when the damper is open. Alternatively a thermostatic device may be located on the base plate 6. The damper may also be controlled by thermostatic means located at the inlet of the casing or in a room. In a modification the device may incorporate a fan which drives the air stream downwards through the device, and itself may be thermostatically or automatically controlled so as to act as a damper.
