Abstract

In a storage space heater of the type whose thermal reservoir discharges heat on a change of phase, the reservoir is charged indirectly by a stream of air which has been passed over an electric heating element. In a heater of the type in which a blower circulates air in a closed circuit through the reservoir and within a heater casing during discharge, the circulation is maintained, and an electric heater in the circuit is switched on, for the charging operation. If a heat exchanger is located in the air stream for the extraction of heat from the heater, the exchanger may be pivoted out of the air stream during charging. In a heater of the type in which ambient air is passed in contact with the reservoir by a fan, the fan casing or a flap valve is pivoted to create a closed air circuit within the heater for the charging operation. Where a pivoted fan casing is provided, the arrangement may be such that in intermediate casing positions part of the fan air flow by-passes the reservoir. Heaters of the type which heat ambient air may be located in a partition wall to serve two rooms, or may be located beneath the floor of a room, ambient air being drawn from and passed to the room through the floor.
