Abstract

1,056,613. Electric storage space heaters. ELECTRICITY COUNCIL and G. L. TOMLINSON. May 12, 1965 [May 6, 1964], No. 18890/64. Heading F4U. A gas circulated by a fan 35 around an electrically heated thermal storage block 10 heats a liquid in a heat exchanger 33 for circulation around a space heating system 37. A direct heater, e.g. a flow boiler 38 may be provided to heat the circulating liquid. The rate of heat transfer from the block 10 may be controlled by varying the speed of the fan 35 or by pivoted shutters 19, 20 operated by solenoids 23, 24 controlled by room thermostats. The heat exchanger 33 may comprise a series of tubes through which the circulating liquid is driven by a pump 34, a valve 39 directing the liquid to the heat exchanger 34 or the flow boiler 38 alternatively. Part of the air circulating around the heat storage block may be allowed to escape through an outlet grille to provide additional space heating, a cool air inlet grille being provided in the casing 14. When a time switch (52, Fig. 3, not shown), is closed the circuits to the block heater (55) and to the flow boiler heater (59) are closed. The circuit to the block heater is opened by a safety thermostat (53) embedded in the block. When the time switch (52) opens the fan (35) is energized. The speed of the fan motor (61) may be controlled by a variable field resistor (60). The fan motor is also under the control of switches (56, 57) responsive to the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere and of liquid in the liquid space heating system. The switches (58, 63) of the fan motor (61) and the pump (34) are gauged so that one is not energized without the other. The shutters (19, 20) are opened by solenoids in (68, 69, Fig. 4, not shown) series with a switch (73/1) operated by a relay (73) itself controlled by a thermal relay (70, 71, 72), the heater (70) of which is in circuit with a variable resistor (74) and with two resistors (75, 76) shunted by contacts (77, 78) by room thermostats (79, 80) or by a single room thermostat.
