Abstract

Apparatus for bulk curing of tobacco, comprising: a compartment (3) for containing tobacco to be cured; a solar heating compartment or duct (5) into which solar heat radiation can enter; solar heat radiation absorption means (50) disposed in the solar heating compartment or duct to heat air therein; non-solar heating means for heating air other than by solar radiation; a heated-air compartment (4) for receiving heated air from the solar heating compartment, the non-solar heating means and the tobacco-curing compartment; a fan (9) for causing air to flow from the heated air compartment; first control means (15) for selectively controlling flow of air from the solar heating compartment or duct to the heated-air compartment; second control means (70) for selectively controlling flow of air from the non-solar heating means to the heated-air compartment; and third control means (12) for selectively controlling flow of air from the tobacco-curing compartment to the heated-air compartment. Both the temperature and humidity in the tobacco-curing compartment can be controlled by operation of the several control means and, when the incidance of solar radiation is low or zero, by utilizing the non-solar heating means. The non-solar heating means may comprise means in which a fire can be maintained, a first duct (7) for hot combustion gases from the fire and a second duct (8) in heat exchange relationship with the first duct and for passage of the air to be heated other than by solar radiation. <IMAGE>
