Abstract
870,000. Electrolyte stripping. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Sept. 17, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958], No. 31676/59. Class 41. Oxide-free, metal-containing refractory coatings are stripped from metal articles by immersing the article as anode in an electrolyte comprising an aqueous solution of from 0.02 to 2 mols. per cent of a water-soluble salt of a hydroxy organic acid and from 2.5 to 5.5 mols. per cent of an alkali metal carbonate. The carbonate may be sodium, potassium or ammonium carbonate and the salt may be the sodium, potassium or ammonium salt of citric, tartaric, tartronic or glycolic acid. The electrolyte may be in a steel container which serves as cathode. A suitable anode current density is from 3 to 6 amperes per sq. in., and the temperature of the bath may be from 120‹ to 200‹ F. Examples are given of removing a chromium carbide - nickel - chromium coating from steel, a tungsten carbide-chromium carbide-nickel coating from steel, a tungsten carbide-cobalt coating from steel and from aluminium, and a tungsten coating from brass.
